HP Pavilion zv5000 boots only in safe mode

My HP Pavilion zv5000 will boot only in safe mode. This began after an episode of overheating (clogged cooling fins which have now been cleaned out). What are likely sources of problem? The screen's backlight has also croaked, but I suspect that is a separate problem in that I can still hook the computer to another monitor and that works fine.
