Defining 'BY', 'BETWEEN' and everything in between... Last reply on July 08, 2008 17:12.
After much discussion, we have decided to change the definition of 'by' to be EXCLUSIVE of the date referenced - here is what the amended Rules will say:
The term "by" will be considered to be exclusive of the date referenced. E.g. "Will the satellite hit earth by March 25th?" will be settled as a "Yes" if it hits prior to March 25th, and 'No' if it hits on March 25th or later. Where possible, category editors should edit 'by' to 'before', to avoid ambiguity.
This is for a number of reasons, but particularly:
1. For consistency with other date questions, ie 'by August' does not include the entire month of August in the time period, and 'by 2009' does not include all of 2009
2. To align with commonsense - although a spot poll has revealed that not everyone naturally interprets 'by' as exclusive, this appears to be the interpretation for the majority
Where possible, we will endeavour to use the terminology 'on' or 'on or before' to try to avoid any ambiguities in questions.
Similarly, for 'between', which often occurs in the context of mutually exclusive time period outcomes (eg between 1 and 2; between 2 and 3), the first option would be interpreted as 1 to 1.99999, and the second 2 to 2.999999. -

Re-opening voided questions Last reply on July 08, 2008 04:27.
Does hubdub have any plans to allow an incorrectly voided question to be re-opened?
In particular, I had two markets that were quite popular and were voided. The first, http://www.hubdub.com/m9590/Will_New_..., was voided by mistake by an admin. (Admins make mistakes, too.) The second, http://www.hubdub.com/m10196/What_wil..., was voided by the "none of the outcomes seem to be impending" rule. -

Tags - now useful Last reply on July 04, 2008 20:30.
As you may have noticed, we have carried on working on the tagging system, putting lots of pretty tag clouds all over place. I hope you're finding this useful - all feedback welcome as ever.
We don't use these tags for news gathering any more, so there is no longer any need to type contorted and repetitive phrases to try and find news articles
Just a couple of other tips for question creators, so that we minimize duplicate tags:
- The best tags autocomplete when you start typing - we like these tags best because we know they already exist
- Tag the country in the world section (except in UK, where we already know it)
- Tag the league or competition in sport (unless there's actually a subcat for it, eg. MLB). 'English Premier League', 'Bundesliga' and 'Wimbledon' are good tags. Also try to tag the team/teams ('toronto blue jays', 'fulham fc', 'ny mets', 'la galaxy' are good examples)
- Don't put in a tag that means the same as the category or subcategory (eg, there is no need for 'us election 08' or similar on a question when that is the subcategory. Same for 'mlb'/'major league baseball' etc.
- We prefer full names for people, eg Barack Obama rather than Obama, and Didier Drogba instead of Drogba. Dubya is 'George W Bush', and I don't think anybody has ever mentioned his dad on the site anyway
- Avoid plurals 'republican' is better than 'republicans'
Hope you enjoy anyway

Copy question as new for question creators Last reply on July 01, 2008 20:58.
To save creators of commonly structured questions some clicks and keystrokes, they can now click the "copy question as new" button at the top right of the question page to duplicate one of their own questions (and modify appropriately) before resubmitting as a new question.
Only the question creator (and super users and admins) have this capability.

Wall Street Journal says, "‘Pundit Watch’ May Need Its Own Watchdog" Last reply on June 26, 2008 21:39.
From today's Wall Street Journal -- ‘Pundit Watch’ May Need Its Own Watchdog
"Pundits are prized for making bold predictions, but they’re usually not held accountable for their forecasting accuracy. A news-prediction Web site is trying to change that with a pundit-tracking game, pitting the likes of MSNBC commentator Chris Matthews against technology blog TechCrunch and entertainment blogger Perez Hilton. While the idea is a good one, the execution is flawed."
With plenty of commentary from Nigel! -

Email notifications on void, unsuspend, cancelled predictions
You'll now get an email notification when:
1) a question you've predicted on is voided
2) a suspended question you've predicted on is unsuspended
3) a prediction you made is cancelled for being too late (past the cut-off time) when a question is settled.
These can be turned off from your Site Settings screen (My Hubdub -> My Account -> Site Settings)
Hopefully this will help you keep even tighter tabs on your H$. -

New stuff on the site Last reply on June 27, 2008 10:54.
Hi, just a quick update on some changes I've made to question creation
1. You can now add your own images. If you have a picture which illustrates your question you can upload as part of the process
2. Easier tag input. We have recently introduced tag pages to allow you to browse related questions. You can add tags to your questions in the same way that news keywords were previously added, but many of the more common tags should now auto-complete. If you start typing and the tag you want appears, just hit enter and move onto the next tag. If the wrong tag appears just keep typing
We've also added an option to your site settings which allows you to skip the confirmation screen when you are cashing in your options. This means that you can now complete the sale without ever leaving the open predictions screen. -

Twitter, Tags, Question images
Hi everyone, we're just released some cool new functionality.
1. Twitter your predictions from Hubdub. On the Prediction Made screen there's a new blue box on the right. From it you can Twitter your responses to questions immediately, from Hubdub, by entering your Twitter username and password. Hubdub can remember these details so each future tweet is just 1 click, or even tweet all your predictions automatically.
Use it to show off your predictions and start discussions with your friends.
2. Tags have arrived. You can now browse to other questions related to the one you're viewing from its tags on the top right of the screen. Question creators pick the tags, and feel free to add as many as you want (it's no longer restricted to specific tags for pulling relevant news).
3. Now, finally, our esteemed question creators amongst you can upload an image with your wonderful questions. There's a box to pick a file from your computer at the bottom of the question details screen. Please, only user images you have the right to use in this way (ie. you own the copyright, the images are unrestricted or you've obtained permission from the copyright holder).
Enjoy!

In Play markets Last reply on June 22, 2008 23:41.
All In-Play markets which can roughly be defined as sports markets in which the suspend time is set for after the event begins. These markets need to be approved by the Category Editor before being created.
If someone wants to create a market and have it labeled "In Play" then they should either first contact the Category Editor and get pre-approval, or create the question and set suspend date in accordance with current rules, then request that the market be designated In Play and suspend date moved. -

How do I "appeal" if I feel a question was settled wrong? Last reply on June 20, 2008 07:50.
How do you ask for help if you feel that something was settled wrong? I flagged it for review several days ago, but it's still just marked flagged. Maybe that only works when it's still open??
Anyway, it was a sports question - " Who Will Win The Rangers or the Mets on Jun 15 /2008????????" http://www.hubdub.com/m9347/Who_Will_...
As there were two games between the two teams, and they split the doubleheader, I wouldn't think I would have lost my bet. If I didn't win the bet (as my team did win on that day), I would at least think I'd get refunded my original wager.
Can anyone shed light on this? -

Super Users now on Hubdub's GetSatisfaction Site Last reply on June 19, 2008 13:04.
The Hubdub Super Users are now labelled as such on the customer satisfaction site. This means that whenever someone posts a new topic to GetSatisfaction, the Super Users will receive an email telling them about the new post.
This means that they will be able to respond quickly to help other users with some of the more straightforward queries, thereby freeing up the time of the Hubdub admin team to develop and improve Hubdub further. More complex queries will continue to be dealt with by Hubdub admins.
We hope that this change will ensure that users receive faster responses to their queries on getsatisfaction and it will be clear who the Super Users are for everyone.
p.s.
Unfortunately, due to restrictions in getsatisfaction's functionality, in order for Super USers to receive these email notifications, they have to be labelled "Employee" - as you may notice from their avatars. Please be assured that SUPER USERS ARE NOT EMPLOYEES OF HUBDUB! They have NO contract with us and we are not paying them a penny or indeed a cent. They haven't even got a free t-shirt out of it (much to their dismay!) They're just really nice users who are madly enthusiastic about Hubdub (see Hubdub FAQs for further details on how they were chosen if you're interested)

In Play NBA Final market feedback Last reply on June 19, 2008 07:31.
I am starting this thread to provide a place for everyone to discuss what they liked and what they disliked about the NBA Finals in play markets. I have some ideas for future in play markets, and think we should keep them limited in quantity and reserved for major events.
I would love to see some of the following events open for in game play. The Major golf tournaments, the MLB playoffs (or just World Series), NFL football (Sunday night game and Monday night game as a minimum), College Football (just the major matchups between top rated teams, and the BCS bowl games), Tennis (just the grand slam events), NASCAR (Daytona 500, a few of the other important events), NHL (stanley cup), WNBA (finals), and I am sure some of you will find others I can't think of.
I propose the following, sports markets close at set times depending on sport. Lets start with Football, suspend any questions about the results of the first quarter before the game
starts (ie.. which team scores more points in first quarter), suspend questions about the results of the first half at the end of the first quarter of play, to carry this all the way out, 3rd quarter markets would suspend at half time, and questions about the final outcome would suspend at end of 3rd quarter. With baseball playoffs, we should suspend games at the 7th inning stretch. Nascar races should suspend with they are within 10% of the final number of laps, if it is 500 lap race, it would suspend when there was only 50 laps to go. I think we can all come up with interesting ways to make these markets exciting, while preventing people from wagering on events that are most likely known. With the other sports we can work out suspension times that provide excitement but don't allow wagering on events when outcome not likely to change. -

No more DJIA, the moron's approach to climbing the leaderboard Last reply on June 18, 2008 07:20.
Just for !@#$ and giggles, how about Hubdub ban all business stock exchange market indexing questions, and thereby take out the top twenty money makers in a single blow? Any thoughts on this anybody? Wouldn't it be incredible if Hubdub was actually based on "news prediction markets" instead of answers to "will the DJIA finish between 12,500 and 12,600" 30 seconds before the close of trading? But I suppose it'd be a bit like taking away the bamboo from Pandas. -

Leaderboard Summary on My Hubdub Page Last reply on June 09, 2008 15:35.
It would be nice to see select leaderboard numbers depicted in the "My Hubdub" tab. There is a lot of open space in this page and since users frequent this page to check on their open questions, etc. it would be more user friendly to have access to those numbers right there rather than having to click through a bunch of stuff on the leaderboard tab. The addition of 8 numbers would suffice:
- All time net worth relative to all Hubdubbers
- All time net worth relative to friends
- Weekly percent gain relative to all Hubdubbers
- Weekly percent gain relative to friends
- Quarterly earnings relative to all Hubdubbers
- Quarterly earnings relative to friends
- Quarterly percent gain relative to all Hubdubbers
- Quarterly percent gain relative to friends
These numbers are all available in the leaderboard tab but require a lot of clicking around. By having them neatly in one place on the "My Hubdub" page it would offer an immediate snapshot of each user's personal status. Additionally, if the user wanted to "drill down" into the details there could be a hyperlink for each of the above categories that would take them directly to the regular leaderboard page for that category of interest. This would reduce the number of clicks necessary to obtain information while offering an excellent summary on a page most frequented by users that has space to spare. -

Question Creation Leaderboard Last reply on June 16, 2008 06:04.
I think it would be interesting to have a leaderboard category for questin creation. Something like a top 10 or top 20 questions defined by activity. This would identify people who have done the best job of creating the most interesting questions with the broadest interest.
I would also suggest against a leaderboard for the MOST questions as that would be too easily achievable and would promote boring, low interest questions only for the sake of creating a lot of questions.
The true goal would be to get people thinking about how to create the BEST questions. -

I support assisted death and please take away $H10,000 from me Last reply on June 08, 2008 04:53.
http://tinyurl.com/4buxup Dr Death needs 3000 signatures to run for Congress
Basically, the outcome as decided by Ryan J on this question is incorrect. It would seem from the links given by supahusah Newswrangler is that in fact Jack Kervokian has INDEED gotten the 3000 signatures necessary to run for Congress. As outlined by NW:
"Assisted Suicide Crusader Jack Kevorkian Makes Congressional Bid Official"
" March 24, 2008
Detroit, MI (LifeNews.com) -- Convicted murderer and assisted suicide crusader Jack Kevorkian made his candidacy for a Detroit-area Congressional seat official on Monday. ...
"State law required Kevorkian to gather 3,000 signatures to qualify for the ballot and he turned in papers with those signatures to local election officials."
<http://www.lifenews.com/bio2376.html>
and here: http://www.reuters.com/article/topNew...
DisealDog (who is having two weeks off in Belize) and I both agree the q should be re-settled or perhaps suspended once again at least until July 17th: From the Oakland Press:
"Kevorkian, a Pontiac native now living in south Oakland County, will have to gather a minimum of 3,000 signatures on nominating petitions by July 17 to appear as an independent on the November ballot, the Michigan Secretary of State's office said."
http://www.theoaklandpress.com/storie...
SO>>>>> either:...
1. resettle as yes
2. suspend until (July 17th) another news source pops up to confirm it.
I made about 4,300 on this, but I know the overworked admin will screw up again and accidentally give me more again one day. So I'll get it back. The important thing I think is that it's settled correctly - that's it! What do you think Ryan? BTW this is nobody's fault: I found the Oakland Press link on Wikipedia, so otherwise it would have been very difficult to determine online that the correct suspension date was July 17th, which is essentially why this problem arose in the first place. I myself couldn't locate anything much on it, and I was interested in the outcome.
