DialIdol and other horrible internet applications
My heart breaks a little to bring this up, but the restriction to limit ourselves to live shows seems to have hit a snag.
When I saw Ramiele up to 90% I finally went to go find some of the websites Destry was talking about and they're pretty proud of their 100% prediction rate so far this year. I find that pretty discouraging. They also work on Dancing with the Stars and So You Think You Can Dance (my absolute favorite show of the year!).
I see a couple options, would love to hear if anyone else has any other ideas:
1) We eliminate all TV shows (and leave entertainment bereft of anything interesting)
2) We push the suspend date to BEFORE even the preformance show. You'd be betting on past performances and base popularity.
#2 Seems like the only real option to me, but I stil don't like it.
Words cannot describe how sad this makes me.. :( even the emoticon isn't enough...
Once the world of politics dies down a little bit I'm going to be hardpressed to find questions I'm excited to bet on if we can't figure out a good solution here. Comments, thoughts?

Inappropriate?I agree, option 2 is the best considering the circumstances. You're right about questions regarding tv shows, my wife has almost completely given up her Hubdub addiction because she only made wagers on TV shows she/we watched and now there are only two shows left for us to put $H on.
The plus side, however, is that betting before the show is a bit like betting on a horse race. It may make the show-watching experience a little more.
I’m bummed

Inappropriate?exciting.
Man, what a sloppy typer I am. -
Inappropriate?TV questions could be worded towards different aspects - "Which contestant will be the first of the potential eliminatees?" or "Which will be the first to be seated safe?" or "How many contestants will use instruments? or "How many candidates will Ryan touch other than a handshake?" (which also makes a wonderful drinking game, but that's a different story) all come to mind. Probably a lot better ones, but with a bit of thought we should be able to come up with questions beyond who wins or loses.
I don't think any of these would be topics of discussion on the spoiler sites (though I'm not sure of this since I'll admit to never visiting one) and would keep reality shows in play.

Inappropriate?A couple of thoughts:
My husband and I talked this over at lunch (mm... McDonalds!) and I'm feeling less like the sites are deal breakers. If we provide links to dialidol in the background it doesn't give an unfair advantage since its available to everyone. The big $ will still be in predicting the losers before the performance show and then after the show you can use the dialidol rankings to make more informed decisions.
Buckeyeguy, I like a lot of your ideas but they're less of a prediction and more of a lottery. I think the fun of betting on shows you like is that you have an opinion about it. That said, I think there's room for more than just the "who's going home" question, so feel free to make some more.
I’m looking for the light

Inappropriate?I think shows in which the outcome is not known, such as Dancing and American Idol, should be allowed to wagered on up til the broadcast of the results. The websites like Dial Idol simply attempt to predict the results, and sometimes they are wrong, so users use them at thier own risk. It is different when dealing with pre-recorded shows in which the outcome is certain.
I don't like the idea of suspending a question before the show airs, would make it super hard to predict who is going home based on the thier performance. A person could suspend the question after the show airs and before the voting takes place. I do have an issue with questions about who will Ryan touch, or who will be seated safe first, those are not newsworthy. The person voted off is reported by news agencies, but the first person to be safe isn't. -
Inappropriate?I would definitely hate to have to ban all TV shows jenniandboys, and I really don't think that would be necessary. I think your idea of posting the "spoiler" site on the question background or in the comments is a good idea, then at least it's a level playing field.
I agree with destry that some of the more creative questions aren't as newsworthy, but it's a tough call between strictly newsworthy and still interesting. Getting a settlement source is the tricky bit (am quite certain there wouldn't be one for one about Ryan touching people...!)
