Inappropriate?Hubdub Admins, no disrespect is intended, but I noticed an eventual lack of participation in the thread you guys created ... also I noticed a lot of concern about the chaotic influence refactoring markets would have.
Props to Hubdub for reaching out to the community in the first place.
I’m not trying to usurp the role of HD admin, I'm attempting to avert disaster.

Inappropriate?I think that all assets (cash and predictions) should be divided by a set amount, for EVERYONE. Some will point out "what about the people with $1000" to those, I don't know what to say, maybe we can discuss this.
I’m uncertain this will work...

Inappropriate?ok, from what i understand of the hubdub plan, it's to basically take a snapshot of everyone's winnings and put it on a board, then scale all scores(cash+predictions) down to either 1k, 2k, 5k, or 20k and to continue this every quarter...long term predictions would definitely suffer under this plan as most people would not hold their money in a market that was long lasting and subject their wager to multiple rescaling...also, if some of the better predictors happened to have a bad week right after the reset it is easy to see them going broke and would have no access to their previous winnings which could cause some people to leave...scaling down predictions in open markets by differing amounts would also seem to cause problems in the odds of those questions....if we scale down by the same amount, say a factor of 100 for everyone this would seem to be more stable, but then simply penalizes the better predictors for the sake of making it easier to catch them

Inappropriate?I agree, my idea isn't that great, but, what SHOULD we do? We have to make it competitive, while NOT hindering long term investments!
-
Inappropriate?i dunno...someone mentioned starting the noobs out at 10k instead of 1k....i had the idea of if you went broke, still being able to access the old quarterly gain, you earned why lose it every 3 months?...the top players aren't going to want to change their betting habits as drastically as hubdub's plan calls for...one of the admin's remarked about a future possibility of pimping out your profile based on old winnings, but that still doesn't take into account what if they go broke plus future functionality is not a substitute for lost playing ability...
-
Inappropriate?how to make it less disconcerting to the noobs without alienating the best players???....they mentioned emphasizing a new weekly gain leaderboard instead of the total networth like it is now...maybe that'll work enough?

Inappropriate?I think the "scale everyone back by a set percentage" is superior to the Hubdub plan, but I still think it is full of holes. The intent of the quarterly redistribution is to level the playing field between the H$ Extremely Wealthy and the H$ Poor. But like all wealth redistribution plans, the Hubdub plan has flaws. Foremost, it will not only reduce markets, but change them in all sorts of unpredictable ways. Hubdub will become a roulette wheel rather than a news prediction site, or perhaps a slot machine or a lotto ticket.
Hubdub had a plan that was not too well received. I proposed a plan that might have been better received, but stil had significant issues.
HD community let's hear your ideas about quarterly rescaling/redistribution/reeducation 8^)
Inquiring minds want to know!@

Inappropriate?no dude, it's a good idea, actually i think its proly what they're going to have to go with...and then anyone below $1,000 would get pushed up to 1,000....if divided by 20 that will give crudsy like 30,000, but i think they'd have to keep those winnings somewhere so that those people could get it if they NEEDED it to stay in the game...i think that's the best option really...every three months, divide everyone by 20 push up all people who are below 1,000

Inappropriate? It's 11:25 EDT here on the East coast of the US. Time to get to work for extremely over worked programmers, like me, who've been spending all evening on GetSatisfaction discussing Hubdub issues.
I’m overworked

Inappropriate?lol, yea i'm about ready for bed

Inappropriate?Since this is unofficial can I ask why people need this redistribution plan. When I signed up the leader had 20 times what I had to start. Does bill gates having billions of dollars makes people who are opening up businesses think I can't do this. No it inspires them to what can be done. I think this redistribution plan is being pushed by those on the bottom of the leaderboards (or not on it at all) and if they spent the same amount of time trying to research news that they are crying about not having any money, they would be well off. For example, the American Idol question about who was going to be voted on yesterday, with 10 minutes of research they could have seen it was going to be a coin flip between kristi and amanda, well looking at the question it was 80% for kristi cook and 8% for amanda. Well placing a 100 bet on amanda would have netted what 1200 bucks. That is what I did, others could have done the same. Crudsy is prime example he is doing excellent job still generating huge % returns and that is harder to do with alot of hubweath (thanks for the term anaverageamerican).
I think as a hubdub community we could simply stand up and say we like the current system. -
Inappropriate?Once you make changes (along the lines as proposed) to cash amounts (ie the ability to wager), you have made HD into two games, the quarterly game(s) and the all-time game. If you accept wealth-alteration (which I'm okay with personally), then that's what you're accepting - a splitting of the "game" into two. [But the alternative is not so bad - quarterly amounts are zeroed, questions are left as is, net worth and available to bet stays as is, basically the game remains as is, but the quarterly board is "fresh" and you can also view weekly % gain. It's not perfect, but it at least makes sense and works. I wonder if the problem here is that they are implementing quarterly change-over AND wealth-redistribution all at the same time?]
Not just because it's mine, after reading the various ideas put forward, I like my idea best.
To summarize, each quarterly game starts at equal (or pole position near-equal). All questions created in a given quarter belong to that quarter alone. At the end of a quarter all questions not settled are suspended (no bets, no cash-ins) until they are settled (maybe a rule where questions can only be up to a year in advance?). In settling a question from a previous quarter, the pay-out or loss affects the players' totals from that past quarter. A question which is thus suspended at end of quarter can be duplicated (using its current odds but initially with no wagers) for the new quarter.
The results from all quarters are used to determine the all-time totals, but other than this and the respawning of long-term questions to the new quarter each quarter is a completely separate game.
An alternative to suspending questions at quarter-end is to leave the game open, but suspend new questions. You keep your cash and predictions, you can still wager and cash-in, but slowly the questions will run out, and perhaps the game totally finishes after 12 months. HOWEVER, Q1 game has no influence on Q2 game. So April 15th, 2009, you could be finishing off Q3, Q4, Q5 and starting Q6, as well as following the all-time game (which just adds up Q1-Q6 results).
As can be seen, this method leaves the long-term (less than 12 months) questions as is. Their results still add to (or subtract from) all-time worth, and you can still play them (bet more, cash-in) until they're settled.
Although it may look complicated, it actually may be very easy to implement. Questions, cash amounts and open predictions etc are all tagged by the quarter they belong to. The quarterly games exist side by side but independently. -
Inappropriate?Hi all, just a quickie to say we are following these discussions, just not responding to every post. Your suggestions have given us food for thought, and we'll respond in full shortly.
Thanks for your continued input.
