Questions with no suspend date/time- Can we fix this?
I am not sure if this topic has been raised or discussed much but I want to bring up the issue of questions with no suspend date. I believe all questions can and should have a reasonable suspend date PRIOR to the outcome being decided. I have come across alot of questions, especially in sports, with no suspend date when there is clearly a day/time when outcome of question is going to be settled. These questions should have a suspend day/time BEFORE outcome is determined and not doing so, in my opinion, is GAMING THE SYSTEM.
I really enjoy Hubdub, and not mad or upset by this issue in anyway. This is a topic I bring up to try and IMPROVE Hubdub.
In my opinion:
1)All questions should have reasonable suspend date/time.
2)Admins reserve right to Add and/or Change suspend date/time using thier discretion.
3)Any question flagged for no suspend date/time or unreasonable suspend date/time
Admins reserve right to Add and/or Change suspend date/time using thier discretion.
The Admins do a great job monitoring and keeping the site going and thier discretion in adding suspend date/time is more than fair especially when creator of question doesnt add one.
Once again, I am only bringing up this topic to make Hubdub better. If anyone else has an opinion on this topic please voice it. All ideas welcome.

Inappropriate?I think this is one of the issues that we are hoping is fixed with the power user system in which questions are held in suspend status until approved. Part of the approving process would be to verify the starting percentages are accurate and that the suspend and settlement details are clear.
I’m shocked we don't have power users yet

Inappropriate? You're absolutely right ontilt, it is a problem. Yes, the Super User approval system will definitely help, and it is coming soon, honest desrty! (We're having a final meeting on it tonight to iron out the last details)
Also, it's been agreed via a seperate discussion on getsatisfaction that we will make suspend dates compulsory on question creation. If a settlement date isn't known (and I do mean "Settlement", please note the difference between Settlement date and Suspend date) then a question creator should enter a guestimated Suspend date and the Category Editors (and potentially Super Users) will have the right to amend that as they see fit)
I hope that helps answer your question.
Lesley.
I’m excited about Super Users

Inappropriate?all sounds good!
I think all questions really can have a suspend dates...
Oh and ontilt, your name reminds me of a song who's title i forget...
"#this is a perfect world, riding on an incline..."
I’m happy!!! and I want to be a super user 'hint hint'

you mean "woof woof" -
Inappropriate?Hi Skipper- I actually chose this name becaue Im a huge poker fan and when i play usually find myself "on tilt" after I lose a big pot.
Thanks for the replys you guys and glad the issue is being addressed.
I just found it wrong that on top of the hubdub site is says:
Hubdub "The News Prediction Game" - but when you have so many questions when outcome will clearly be known and no suspend date/time it isnt really predicting, its watching and waiting for outcome and rushing to bet the bank.
Thanks again for replys- And yes Lesley your response along with others does answer my question.
Happy Hubdubbing!
I’m thankful

Inappropriate?I'm going to /pretend/ to know what 'on tilt' means while you _secretly) explain it to me :D
I’m happy OnTilt is Thankful!

Inappropriate?I have 3 currently open questions that do not have specified suspend dates/times. They are all related to the NHL playoffs. What I have done is to specify a "logical" suspend time in the question background., with the understanding that I will alert the sports editor to the actual suspend date/time when the NHL releases the info required to pin it down. The logical descriptions are "at the start of game 1 of the finals" and "at the start of game 4 of the finals". I feel these are fairly specified, and there is certainly no intent to "game" with these questions.
I'd like to see this be an option when creating a question, where a logical event can be specified, but a actual date/time is not yet available.

Inappropriate? Thanks for this suggestion, infernalmachine. The suspend date issue is something we've debated from the beginning of Hubdub, and is still being debated! But I think your idea could work with some more thought and development time. I'll pass it onto the development team and see if we can add it to the future feature list.
In the short term, we will be making the suspend date compulsory for the reasons outlined above. That will mean that question creators will have to set a date they think may be roughly right, and when the actual date is known, the Category Editor, or potentially a Super User, will have to amend it.
Thanks for your input.

Inappropriate?Further Suggestions (some already indicated by others):
- Do not allow settlement dates to exceed 1 year
- Do not allow the difference between the suspend date and the settlement date to exceed 15 days (to avoid users' H$ being locked up for impractically long periods of time). If the suspend date/settlement date difference exceeds 1 day clearly mark the question with a bold icon indicating such so that users don't accidentally lock up their money.
- Take action to settle all questions as quickly as possible. Many people have been wagering on events for which the outcome is already known (just look at some of the graphs). This should reduce laborious admin voiding time, reduce the amount of time users' H$ is out of reach, and reduce unfair wagering practices.
- Set up and admin/power-user "settlement chain" whereby questions that have reached a settlement date or been flagged for settlement flow down the chain as they age. For example, if the settlement point has been reached and not settled within 4 hours it is sent on to the secondary settling authority and then after an additional 4 hours it is sent on to a tertiary settling authority. Throughout this time period any of the settling authorities that have received the request may settle the question.
- Suspend all voting related questions at midnight the day before the polls open. Some election question suspend times have been during the day of voting allowing users to change their wagers based on exit polling.
- Check time stamps (i.e. article date/time) on outcome evidence for settlement requests and void all wagers and cash-outs for that question that occur after the time stamp.
Hope this helps. -

Check out the graph!
This type of thing allows people to make or avoid losing massive H$ on KNOWN OUTCOMES.
What does everyone think of this?
I’m appalled!
