Sports Questions Suspend Time Issue
Given that these questions should suspend at or before game start (per current rules and new guidelines), how exactly is this going to be implemented? Is Donal going to slog through every question, find the games, research the details of game start, figure out the time zone and finally put in the correct suspend time? Yikes, poor guy. Are we just leaving it up to the questioners to put in the right time? Neither seems completely accurate or efficient.
I'd say hubdub users can play their part. But how? Leave a comment on the question page and flag it? Isn't flagging for bad questions? It can't be to use the settle button (or can it?) because we're talking start time here, not final result. Could we have a suspend request button? This could work for any question where an event occurs in real life that demands that activity on the related market be suspended - like the Mitt Romney announcement today.
Final question: What happens when someone hits that button? Sure, if the editor is there at the moment, and not busy, they take action. But otherwise? Yes, you can retroactively void bets made after this time, but can you void the cash-ins retroactively?
My suggestion is to perhaps have the same superuser players that vet new questions be able to suspend betting and cashing-in immediately. This grants much better coverage of the markets, and fixes the cashing-in problem of waiting for the editor's attention. But it is a bit of a trust issue as far as giving an editor's power to a few community members.

Inappropriate?Great idea.

Inappropriate? At the moment, I go through every question. Where I miss a question, I void wagers after the start time.
But I have found that more users are making an effort on this, especially on the NBA, NCAA and NHL markets. So major thanks to all the users that are getting this right!
I’m happy that more and more users are getting settlement times correctly

Inappropriate?Unless a question states that no bets can be taken after the game starts, ALL bets made within the course of the game should be accepted. Most games have ebbs and flows and just because a bet is made in the first half/period does not mean itis going to win.
I made a wager last night during the second half of a game that according to the rules of the question was legal. I had to sweat it out thinking I would lose. I didn't "game" the system by trying to bet after the game was over. Instead, I wke up this morning and see ut was voided.
If the Dow can be bet intra-day, so should sports. If not, this type of inconsistency will all but guarantee you drive players away. -
Inappropriate?I think that the difference between stock markets and sports events boils down to two things. First markets are open longer than most games last, and, most of all, markets close at a fixed time.
I could see allowing some questions to last into the first part of the game (say an hour) as long as the game could never be over in that time. But it's Donal's call. -
Inappropriate? The length of time doesn't matter. If intraday trading is allowed for one market, it should be allowed for the other.
I'd suggest using the TV timelines for sporting events. For example, college basketball games are scheduled for 2 hours. So if a college game is scheduled to start at 5pm PT, accept trades until 6:30 (or some other time between 5-7). Makes more sense than being locked out completely while the financial markets can be traded for 99% of their available time. -
Inappropriate?Couple of things:
1. All sports questions should be suspended before the game starts. The reason for that is that if we allow in-running predictions on lots of sports markets then it becomes too easy to make risk-free money on low liquidity questions (e.g. betting at 50/50 on a team that is way in the lead in the last minute). Exceptionally, when there is a really big event (like the Super Bowl) we would like to open it up to in-running but that will be a highly liquid market. At the moment only Hubdub admin can create an in-running market.
2. At the moment Donal has to check all questions close before the event starts (or voids predictions after the start time). It isn't a process that scales (we have considered cloning Donal). So we are working on functionality that allows power users to vet new questions. Details here:
http://getsatisfaction.com/hubdub/top...
Long term we want to open up all the functionality available to category editors. Therefore we could have in-running on any sporting event where there is sufficient interest! -
Inappropriate? The two questions in, uh, question are:
What will be the result of the US-Mexico soccer friendly on February 6, 2008?
Who will win the Missouri Democractic Primary on super tuesday?
Thanks. -
Inappropriate?I'm not particularly in favor of allowing questions open into the first hour of a game as I think its a bit arbitrary. TV times aren't a reliable closing time because games can go into overtime. On betting exchanges such as Betfair, in-play is an all or nothing proposition. There is no midway cut off points. I think this is the best precedent to follow.
In any event, liquidity is the major consideration when choosing to let questions go in play, and at this point the number of sporting events that would provide the necessary liquidity is limited.

Inappropriate?I'll add the Time Zone stuff into my thought on this :)
PST is fine, but it surely would be highly beneficial if each user could set his local time. When I created a bunch of Uefa Cup questions lately, I was so much into odds that I made mistakes with the precise settlement dates ( sorry for that Donal, you'll have some upcoming troubles there ) . Calculating odds should be of higher priority than checking time zones ;)
Besides that I'd say: give users the ability to suggest alternative settlement dates, if obvious mistakes have been made. Perhaps one could consider automatic replacement of the dates when enough (Power) Users request a new settlement. That would surely be an immense help for you guys.

Inappropriate?I agree with both points here.
