The Golden Rules for successfully playing the HUBDUB
I noticed jers beeing asked for some suggestions how to make a better progress in words of gain on staking money in predictions. Jers was very polite to give some basic hints on that.
IMHO it could be encouraging if there were some guidelines or hints for newbies which they could try to follow and which could contribute to the progress someone makes.
Knowing about the willingness of many of us to freely share our opinions, our long time evolved experience and knowledge of the system, I think it's time to start formulating
THE GOLDEN RULES for successfully playing the HUBDUB
Please feel free to add your personal idea of what could be one of those rules.
Not sure whether to make this an Idea or a Discussion ...

Inappropriate?sell high, buy low!
But really, predict on things you know about.
I’m happy to help (however I can)
-
Inappropriate? While there are ways to make $H on both sides of a market, if it is a volatile market (like markets about the DOW, NASDAQ, etc), it is preferable to find a market where you feel confident of the outcome, and place wagers on that choice.
If your net worth is below $H3k, ...
You should not take positions for over $H100. (you're not getting the best returns because you end up moving the market up prior to your purchase.)
You would do much better making multiple $H20 or $H50 even though it may take more work and more time.
You need to shop around for a market where your prediction is below 40%, or preferably lower. (Buy low, sell high, applies here).
You want to avoid long-term predictions. You want your $H to churn, constantly making you money.
You want to cash out your position if it reaches 95% or more, and still has time before settlement. You can put your money back to work.
Avoid markets where your prediction has already hit 95%, even if it will close in a few days. You can make more profit on some other market by that time.
Do not place your wagers when your predictions are at or above 50%. While you may be sure of the outcome, again, your return is not agressive. Take a position when the percentage of your choice is below 40% (preferably less) in order to get a better return. In truth, if you want to grow rapidly, you need to shop around a bit, a take positions where your choice is below 20%. Then, other Hubdubbers who feel the same, will drive your 20% placement up to 50% or better. At this point, you've made 30%+ on your position. If the event is not going to be settled for some time, cash out your position and go shopping again.
I’m just gettin' started

Inappropriate?Betting on crowd movements
To understand what you are doing when "riding the wave" (stake money at a low percentage and cash out before settlement actually occurs) and cashing out with a profit:
You predict that more hubdubbers will bet on a certain outcome than the current standings. This is highly speculative, of course. You do not predict that the option will be the actual outcome. In fact, you might even be sure another option will be the correct outcome, but still, the possible raise of the false option might give you the earnings.
This is likely, when the outcome of a question seems really not (or hardly) predictable or the odds are far from the real possibilities. This must be evaluated on each question itself.
On the other hand, you should not speculate on something like that when the question is going to be settled soon (jerry said already) or the outcome seems to be decided. There will be not enough people to swing the market in your direction anymore and you'll be loosing your bet.
On the other hand, you might, theoretically, be causing the wave yourself if you put a large amount on a low priced option. In that case, the price raises noticeably and other users might think "hey, some people seem to be sure on that outcome - they have information that i have not - i will just follow". But do not count on that! -
Inappropriate?Avoid very long running markets. You're just locking up your money.
-
Inappropriate? For any person who wants some fast money -
Gather up $1500 or so and follow (don't bet yet) the Dow ( or any insanely fluctuating stock market) for 4 days. On Friday put your bets in and you are sure to double whatever you invest.*
*conditions apply =)
-
Inappropriate?Make up at least two add'l userid's, and manipulate the market to your advantage. ;)
ROFL
I’m totally kidding of course!
-
Inappropriate? However, don't be so stupid as to get both onto the Entertainment leaderboard..
I’m ROFLMAO
-
Inappropriate?Very funny. Can we get back to the topic and leave this personal stuff behind?
Go somewhere else flaming at each other - spoil some other thread with it.
Thank you.
I’m asking myself wether this is a kindergarden or so
-
Inappropriate?Well Kruijs, I think that while the above exchange was a bit funny, it is also a very real thing on Hubdub. The amount of gaming that goes on is very relevant and if new users are on the lookout for it, they can flag it as they see it. Maybe then we can get the admins to do more to stop it, reprimand those that have done it, and keep this site clean. Nothing frustrates users more than knowing they are playing fair and those above them are there because of gaming the site. That is much worse than the difference in wealth among players.
-
Inappropriate? Thanks for your answer destry, I really appreciate it. Gaming actually is a major issue. But not a primary topic on this discussion. Even less is this discussion meant to be a platform on which (former?) cheaters and (selfreferring?) fair players should quarrel each other.
I'm still hoping for some helping hands the experienced guys reach out to rookie players.
I’m dissapointed
-
Inappropriate?I do not think that what sd said should be considered illegal. imho he just tells you to watch the game to recognize how markets behave, and to than stake your bet on a position where the outcome is somewhat better predictable.
-
Inappropriate?bet on what you know, enjoy the witty comments, don't worry what anybody thinks and/or has to say, everyone plays for a different reason so be true to yourself and to your own personal satisfaction
-
Inappropriate?oh yeah if there is nothing you know or are interested in , then post your own questions
-
Inappropriate?unless everyones hubdud dollars are rest DON'T bet on anything that the top predictors have as public information , it could be misinformation
-
Inappropriate?I think the first thing to understand is that there is no magic rule, or trick to making money. What a person notices who sees those moving up and down the leaderboards, is that those who spend time on the site, looking at questions, researching news, and making predictions based on informed knowledge tend to do better. As was said above, watching markets move to get a feel of the flow can really help. Remember as more and more people read these posts and move a market the same way, the less likely it will be to make money using those methods.
I do agree with meanderingsearch, I usually put predictions public that I want others to wager on the same direction I am to push the market in that direction. Sometimes I will show a prediction to settle a dispute about putting money where opinion is, but for the most part I keep my predictions hidden.
I like to keep a watch on new questions, usually can get good odds on a new market. Only downside is waiting the 12 hours before being able to cash out. I also like to watch questions in which alot of action is moving the markets, there ususally is chance to either make some quick cash profits, or get in a good long term position.
I agree with those above that playing long term markets (those lasting more than 3 months) are generally a big waste of cash. While you might get decent odds, the position will slowly move and your money be tied up too long.
My closing point is to have fun. Comment on questions, get involved and then regardless of profit or loss you will at least get a feeling of satisfaction.. -
Inappropriate?the gaming of HD is so beyond me why anyone would want to do that.it takes the sport right out of the game, then whats left?
I just like to see my predictive ability and learn about new and exciting things in this world. I discovered an eerie similarity with the "where will the dow close today" and "how many quakes this week"
counting the quakes and watching the market writher. has distinct parallels albeit different perception.
Great pointers posted here, btw.
I’m hoping hubdub succeeds

Inappropriate?pretty good tips here so far.
try and set a percent gain per day you want to make. let's say 10%. so on day two you're hoping to have turned your initial $1000 into $1100. remember this is the sum of your cash and the current value of your predictions. it doesn't seem much, but after a month, a daily growth of 10% means you'll have about $20,000, and after two months $400,000.
if you make a wager, and the market turns against you because of events that change the likelihood of your winning, just cash-in the wager as soon as possible. cashing-in a losing wager may feel like a loss, but it doesn't change your net worth. it does, however, prevent your net worth from dropping more.
don't worry if you make incorrect predictions. everyone does. the future is unknown, all you're trying to do is to be right a little more often than you're wrong -
Inappropriate?New players can invest $1 in markets at extremely low odds (close to 0) and then when it rises you can cash out and make a handsome profit of $ $20 or so. If you get lucky and the prediction turns out to be right then you'll lose just $1 (.1 % of your starting fortune).
PS: any miserly people should avoid this as this will probably give them a heart attack . -
Inappropriate?meanderingsearcher has hit the proverbial 'nail on the head'.
After all, this is why we are all here.
thx meandering.
-
Inappropriate?Try this: bet on the unlikely option in all the football questions(Valencia, for example, against Real Madrid, brought me $700 on a $100 bet)- I made a lot of my early winnings like that..
-
Inappropriate? On the "Will any state execute anyone by 29th Feb" question, my $1 bet at 0.01 % rose to $1189 and I cashed out: Thats a
118800%
gain!!!!!
I’m happy

Inappropriate? When not gambling with undervalued options but predicting seriously the outcome of an event, you should be confident with your stakes and keep cool.
Don't Panic
No matter how the market develops: You have chosen your option - You were sure of the outcome than. Why should that change all of a sudden?
Best way playing the serious predictions is to stake your bet and leave. Fire and forget. This will not bring maximum gain in shortest time, but it will pay out. In this case: Don't sell to prevent further loss if a position goes down. -
Inappropriate? In either case: Make your own decisions.
Do not trust on the movement of the market.
- They are caused by speculation
Do not trust the comments.
- They only aim at you predicting certain, wrong outcomes
Do not trust any advice or suggestions.
- They will put you off the scent
Do not trust other players.
- They want your money
Do not trust us.
- It isn't coincidentally us being on top of the leaderboards
Do not trust these guidelines.
- As they are written by us
Happy gambling!
-
Inappropriate?I want to thank you PRO's all (so far) for putting in your helpful suggestions.
Maybe Hubdub will take them and creates some meaningful context of these. I really hope we will get some blingbling as acknowledgment if so :) Is anyone listening?
-
Inappropriate?Umm kruijs, why did you start this thread if you were going to post, "Do not trust any advice or suggestions"?. That seems a bit counterproductive to me, if you get my drift 8^)
I’m teasing a friend, I'm sure kruijs started this thread to help newcomers!

Inappropriate?I was just kidding.

Inappropriate?take what i say as u wish..alot of this is computer access i think..it allows u to buy and sell at good prices but here are some things i have done..everyone can have their own system..1-try only placing wagers up to 300 bux at a time (for those who have it)..more than that really tilts the odds but for some reason some questions, especially i find politic ones tilt even more so watch the odds and it allows u to cash out some of ur wagers at good profits or less losses and keep some others if u want.-2-three words i try to hubdub by (not always succesful)..dont be greedy..if u are making a profit ur comfortable with cash out..its not worth making a few hundred dollars to lose everything..cash out and move on-3-this one may be time consuming at first but will save u time in the long run..go through all pages of questions..find ones ur interested in either short or long term and do what i call open a portal which is to put down a low amount just so u have it in ur hubdub so when u go to ur hubdub and it gets closer to closing or u want to do more research u can and it allows u to check the odds to see whats going on with it..once u do that u really only have to check for new questions-4-when i see stuff at like 90 percent or whatever even if it looks sure like brittany spears moving in with klum i could make a small amount but to me placing big money on a person like britanny isnt worth it because she does some far out stuff..id rather put money on something like a corporation or country because that seems like a more intricate process-5-wager on what u like not just the odds because just because u think a market may move big doesnt mean ull b online when it happens so at least if u dont ull have made a wager u wanted..i'll take my 10k now destry..:)..i hope this doesn't help people too much though
