I have a notebook connected to an external monitor which displays: No Connection - Check Signal Input. How can I fix it?

Inappropriate?The external monitor is not receiving a video signal. Perfom the following steps to fix the problem:
1) open the laptop lid (check if image is displayed on the laptop screen);
2) close the laptop lid (you will hear a beep sound)
3) gently press the power button on the docking base (you will hear a beep sound)
4) the image will appear on the external monitor
