Inappropriate?I'm sorry, but I have to agree with the original poster - I shopped there, and staff refused to help me other than pointing me in general directions, although i was clearly lost.
Later, when I couldn't find any staff in the area i needed, i asked someone in a nearby area for help (politely), and she snapped at me that I should find someone in the couches area. When I said that there was no one there, she snapped (even more annoyed) that there was, i should go there and look (I did. There wasn't.) -
Inappropriate?I find the original poster's comments "no surprise it's in the ghetto" to be rude and offensive. The post isn't even a question, how about some specifics on your issue. I conclude that the poster was probably rude first like Sayeeda said.
Also I hope everyone understands that IKEA is more of a self serve type of store. There is some responsibility on your part in order to save money vs. other stores. It's not Bloomingdales and you are not going to get pampered. -
Inappropriate?Um...I think that the idea of a ghetto has nothing to do with race - it's a general statement about a type of neighborhood, the type of people living there, and the activities going on.
In this case, though, I'm not familiar with the neighborhood that much, so I can't comment on that. And I accept that you can have a "self-serve" type of store. But when I called, and they told me they'd be open on thanksgiving (they weren't - although neither their store number, not their website mentioned that)...or when I was told that my wardrobe needed only a 79 1/2" ceiling to assemble (and I asked about it, because it seemd a bit low for a wardobe that's a smidge over 79"), and they told me that it's no problem - but the directions say that the option for building it in a room that less than 83 inches tall is far more difficult (I would say extremely difficult).
Those are just a few examples of the issues I faced.
I’m annoyed

Inappropriate?Um, I didn't say anything about race - you did. It could be offensive to those people that are not at least middle class and are from a minority group. Look up "ghetto". The way you word it "no surprise it's in the ghetto" is exactly offensive. Then you go on to say "I'm not familiar with the neighborhood that much..". What is it? If you don't like shopping in the ghetto and the type of people at the Brooklyn store then go shop at the Paramus store.
So it sounds like a mistake on IKEA for not clearly posting or informing you of their holiday hours. However most retail locations are closed on Thanksgiving though. As far as the product dimensions - did you look at the tag or the dimensions on the flat pack?
Sounds like you need to take some responsibility for not doing your homework. -
Inappropriate?Whoa - I wasn't the one who made the original comment of "no surprise it's in the ghetto, " and I'm not saying I agree with it.
I couldn't care less about the location, personally. I don't mind going there (location wise, at least). Yes, ghetto can be used in terms of an ethnic group, but it's more often used to describe a TYPE of area - and that type of area happens to coincide with high crime rates. There can be lots of good people living there, too, but that's a separate issue.
Please read my post again, as far as "doing my homework" - I had called them a few days before and ASKED - I was told that they would be open. Then, when I tried to double check, their number and website agreed with that! They mentioned NOTHING about being closed. But the fact that I was told they'd be open is obviously far worse.
And the information on the wardrobe said that you need a ceiling height of 79 1/2" - it said nothing more than that. because of my suspicion, I then called customer service and checked with them, as well as asking sales reps in the store, and they ALL assured me that it was not a problem. -
Inappropriate?sorry as I confused you with the original poster. your comments seemed to back up the original poster though.
I hope you returned your wardrobe product and explained to returns the discrepancies on ceiling height. -
Inappropriate?i wish - first of all, keep in mind that when I went, I had to arrange with a friend to go with me, since a 79" box wouldn't fit into my car. So to bring it back would've been a HUGE hassle.
Plus, they wouldn't have given me a full refund, since I'd already tried to build it - and once you do, it's no longer "new." I would have much preferred to get my money back and find another option for getting a wardrobe in my room.
We finally agreed on a compromise - they replaced the broken pieces (I'd like to say any two non-professionals try to build this wardrobe standing up), and they had workers come down, and I only had to pay half of the installation costs.
