GPL Policy - Where's Community Builder?
Many people have asked why the latest community builder component isn't in the updater.
The answer, taken directly from the community builder website when I downloaded RC 2:
It's our policy to always respect the rights of the copyright holders.
(If you aren't familiar with the various software licensing mechanisms, the below may not make sense. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNU_Gene... for a start)
Non-GPL ["Non-Free"] compatibly licensed software always requires for us to have permission from the copyright owners before distribution can occur. Normally, we just add GPL-based software without any formal process (that's what the GPL is for, allowing free distribution of software without proprietary constraints).
[That's why some great stuff isn't yet available in the Updater]
Even though Community Builder is licensed under the GPL, with such a direct request from the owners it was decided not to include it in the system until we have been given permission to do so, so it has been removed (for now).
Once I get some additional bandwidth, I am hoping to negotiate with the developers and setup a seperate, paid, community builder channel that can support their efforts - in addition to the standard free channel . (There's just too much on my plate atm to start vendor negotiations today - Angels? Are you out there?).
There are many facets to this, and I'd really like a thoughtful discussion.
The answer, taken directly from the community builder website when I downloaded RC 2:
CB Release Candidates are only given to a closed group of users.
Users in this closed group are not permitted to distribute this code without the written permission of the CB Team.
Any user that violates this simple matter will lose any Joomlapolis priviledges (paid or not) that they have.
Thank you for your understanding.

Inappropriate? So, the people developing Community Builder say it is only for a select few. How does one get to become one of the selected? I was so looking forward to Community Builder to build out my online communtiy. SRT
I’m frustrated

The developers say they will release it free of charge when it's done (and I will then be able to put it into the updater) ... in the meantime, you can get it from their site after paying for a yearly "documentation subscription" to help support their development.

This release has been frustrating for many people. -
Inappropriate?Hi guys -
I am also one of the "select few". To me this component is simply a must for my membership sites and therefore I am more than willing to "get with the program" by upgrading to the annual Community Builder Documentation Subscription. I mean this has got to be the best 30 bucks I ever invested.
Just a thought,
Chris -
Inappropriate?Update: We've been in contact with the Community Builder team, and they've declined to allow us to include the RC version of CB in the Updater at this time.
We've mutually agreed to revisit this decision in about two months, and again when the full, released version of CB is ready.
