Inappropriate?First!
ok, now that's out of the way =P
Nick, I love the Joomla! Updater. Personally, I develop plugins for my customers and would love a much easier way to manage the packages within. It took just a few moments to sign up. I then had access to several packages to install.
Though I have to say, your tool is going to end up killing my freelance work. While it takes many programmers just a few moments to set up open source tools, customers on craigslist and other freelance sites pay anywhere from $30 to $100 for a tool to be installed. If this gets out, it will put the power of open source software in everyone's hands.
There is a definite win/win as it will give open source developers an entire new way to reach end-users.
I can't wait to check this out further.
Thanks for another great tool!
I’m happy!

bluh, grammatical quandary that will bug me... entirely new or entire new ... my gut would say entirely new, but i think entire new does work... -
Inappropriate?Wow! this is a fantastic piece of joomla marvel...I've never seen anything like it when it comes to ease of installing joomla plugins or components...one-click is all it takes....you're even notified when it is time to upgrade...great job!
I’m happy and excited !

Inappropriate?I have installed a brand new version (1.5.3) of Joomla with a RocketTheme template. The installation of the component went fine, however when I try to "Add Software" I get the following error:
Parse error: syntax error, unexpected '=', expecting ')' in ../public_html/administrator/components/com_updater/lib/isnclient/utils.inc.php on line 84
Any ideas?
Thanx,
Chris -
Looks like a PHP4 issue. I'll be working on PHP4 support for beta 2, due out later this week. -
Chris, i've setup a copy of Joomla! 1.5 on our development server (running php5) for you. Please check your email for details. -
Inappropriate? What a great component. It was easy to install and I had several extensions at my fingertips in minutes...Truely a huge time saver.
For me the registration seemed a little off. I am not sure how exactly to make it better at this point. Maybe some bold text would suffice in making it more clear what to do.
Overall, Fantastic component. Cant wait to see what is added next.
Thanks
Eric
I’m very excited
-
Thanks Eric, glad you like the system.
I agree registration needs some work ... we're looking at some sort of
different system for beta 2/3, possibly using CSS to hide the form that isn't needed. -
Inappropriate?Hi Nick -
OK, thanks for that. I have now installed the component on the demo server (after creating/activating Network ID). This part went fast and flawless. When looking at the "menu" of software Ican install, I think it is very well laid out, though people who do not know what Legacy is may need more information than the byline at the bottom of the page (this could be linked to a further explanation or written into the UI when the user is installing, or, dare I say it, the manual).
I tried installing "Breezing Forms" which returned the following error (listed 7 times): JInstaller::install: INSTALLER LANG NOT INSTALLED. The compononent seems to have installed correctly anyway.
I then went on to try the CB install and again it would appear there is a problem with the language settings (*see attached screenshot - ss_cb-install.jpg), plus there was a timeout error after installation step 1. I then went on to install step 2 (by using the link shown) and the rest of the component and modules were installed correctly.
All the other (Native) components installed without any problems, including the templates (Jamba/Blank page) and the Aweber plugin process (Amazon).
I then activated the Legacy plugin and installed the rest of the components.
After installing the Joomla Xplorer component (which installed fine) it is not possible to get out of the page again (.../administrator/index.php?option=com_joomlaxplorer) as the top menu (Joomla) items appear not to function. The component links work OK. I tried then to go into a sub-directory, which worked fine, but again no functionality on the main Joomla administrator menu. I had to log out/log in to proceed further. After I logged in again, I re-tried Xplorer (to see if it was just a one-time hitch, but unfortunately, the same problem arrived. (Thjis time I just used back page to exit the component).
FireBoard and uddeIM installed no problem.
When installing DOCman I got the following error:
* JInstaller::install: WARNSAME
* Package Install: There was an error installing an extension:plg_doclink_1.5.0rc1.zip
* Package Install Failed. The problem may have been transient in nature (i.e., a bad internet connection), so you may want to try again. If the problem persists, please let us know.
Plus the "Action" column shows this component as "Previously installed".
With that said, the component actually installed correctly and works fine! :o)
Content Versioning process also works fine.
In general, I noticed the Legacy packages seem to take a slightly longer to install than the Native packages. Not by a lot, but noticable.
All in all this is a fantastic tool and will save tons of time for Joomla users. Well done Nick, an excellent piece of software. I look forward to seeing the beta 2 version.
Chris

Great feedback! The language errors are known problem in J!1.5.3, and seem to be fixed in 1.5.4 (upgrade available shortly). Timeout errors are becoming problematic ... I need to find a way to split packages up into multiple files (behind the scenes so you don't notice). A lot of Joomla! packages take "installation" into their own hands, and thus throw up warnings or other issues ... I'm going to have to get with the maintainers to fix those, or do a minor update here. JoomlaXplorer may be a browser error - what version are you using? Specifically a conflict between mootools and JQuery or other libs. In any case, it looks like nearly all the issues you found were with the packages themselves, not necessarily the installer (which is a good thing). I just have to figure out how to provide package support, and whether "forking" the packages to make them more stable makes sense or not. -
The browser I used for this test was Firefox (2.0.0.15). -
Inappropriate?Hi Nick -
Updated Joomla to 1.5.4 and updated PHP4 to PHP5 (5.2.2) on my own server. Reinstalled and activated Updater component without any problem.
When installing BreezeForms I got the same error as previously (JInstaller::install: INSTALLER LANG NOT INSTALLED.) even though the component installed fine, so I uninstalled the component (NOTE: When uninstalling this component it was listed as FacileForms!) and tried to reinstall it (through your component). This time I got:
* JInstaller::install: WARNSAME
* Package Install: There was an error installing an extension:plg_breezingforms_151b2.zip
* Package Install Failed. The problem may have been transient in nature (i.e., a bad internet connection), so you may want to try again. If the problem persists, please let us know.
I reloaded the site and tried to install the component again - same result as above.
Moving on, I installed Community Builder. Unfortunately I found the same problem as previously (language errors), although the component appears to function properly.
DOCman error (same as BreezeForms):
* JInstaller::install: WARNSAME
* Package Install: There was an error installing an extension:plg_doclink_1.5.0rc1.zip
* Package Install Failed. The problem may have been transient in nature (i.e., a bad internet connection), so you may want to try again. If the problem persists, please let us know.
This component shows up as "previously installed" (even after being uninstalled/deleted and reinstalled).
Everything else installed fine (including the templates and Legacy components - although I still have a problem with the admin menu when using Xplorer).
All the best,
Chris -
Inappropriate?Chris -- thanks for your feedback. You are still testing the same component (beta 1), so it's not surprising that you're receiving the exact same results as you did last time :-> The only change I can see is that you tested 1.5.4, right? And everything works the same?
-
Hi Nick - Yes the only difference is 1.5.4 (I wanted to check the language problems), but I also managed to get the component installed on my own server and tested. Nothing spectacular, I just wanted to keep you posted. -
Inappropriate?Hi Nick -
When trying to access the component throught the backend (administrator) I get the following error (1.0.8b2):
Fatal error: Function name must be a string in
/home/xxxxxxxx/public_html/administrator/components/com_updater/lib/isnclient/manifest.class.php on line 144
I can see that there is an update available but when I click on the update button, all I get is the ajax loading gif (in a full browser window by itself).
I then unistalled the component, reinstalled it, updated it (no problem this time), but still it shows 1.0.8b2 (is this the correct version)?
All the best,
Chris -
The correct vesion is 1.0.9 b2 -- 1.0.8 was only up for a little while before I discovered it was packaged from the wrong source tree.
What URL are you using to install the package from? It's possible the system has left a stale copy around someplace.

Inappropriate?I tried to update it directly through the Joomla Admin panel from the reinstalled 1.0.8b2 (which I previously reinstalled).
Do you have a direct link to 1.0.9b2? -
Inappropriate?Terrific Component. I installed the 1.09 b2 version and it installed without a hitch. This is my first time getting a look at this and I must say I was thrilled with all the packages available. This will save loads of time when setting up new sites.
Once I installed it I saw that it had an upgrade available...clicking on that worked great. I was able to install most of the packages without any problems.
I did have problems installing a couple of packages.. the community component and the joomlaxplorer. I hadn't clicked the "refresh" button after I upgraded. Once I did click the "refresh" button those packages went away and I had at least one new one to install which again installed without a problem.
Having the "switch to legacy" mode button is a really nice feature.
Overall, really great component. Can't wait to see what new packages will be added next.
Veronica
I’m amazed

Inappropriate? Thanks for testing this out ... the disjoint you saw was due to the nature of the beta ... I had to switch the server behind the scenes and the list got stale - so that problem should be "fixed" in the next version.
Remember you can add the components you'd like to see, and vote for your favorites on the http://intellispire.com site.
We're using Crowdsound, so you can access the list directly there, too:

Inappropriate? There are two versions listed - the Pro version also includes Joomla version updates. What's the situation with that please, or is it to come?
-
Inappropriate?Hi Chris -
I assume you saw the page I've been working on the site ...
You are just a few hours early - Pro is being announced later today, for release on Thursday.
