Can I increase my comment character length limit?
It seems that IDC has a comment length limit of around 500 words (not certain). On one of my blogs we regularly have lengthy discussions in the comments which can easily reach essay limits. In Wordpress, that wasn't an issue but now it forces us to split our comment into parts.
Is there a way to increase the comment size limit somehow? I couldn't find anything in the control panel. If there isn't I would really appreciate such a way or at least a workaround.

Hi Thomas,
I apologize for the delay. Where are you encountering this issue? Please email me specific links to support@intensedebate.com. What web browser are you using? Are you posting with an IntenseDebate account or as a Guest?
On a separate note, I'd like to request that you please email support@intensedebate.com for all future issues. Emailing support ensures that the issue is logged in our tracking system which is a critical limitation of Get Satisfaction since we're unable to use it with our tracking system.
We will be moving away from providing future support in Get Satisfaction. However until that happens please only email us at support@intensedebate.com.
Thank you,
Michael

Inappropriate?I'm looking into this db0. I'll get back to you shortly.
Thanks for your patience,
Michael
I’m unsure
-
Inappropriate? To my knowledge there is no word limit except what can be sent using a query string, which was something like 35k characters (guess). If you're experiencing a char limit, it's probably something to do with your blog theme that's setting it.. This is not a setting we can override using CSS, it's a HTML attribute that's not been ported to CSS to my knowledge.
We'll see if it's something we can increase though. -
Inappropriate?Michael, there is certainly a limit as the warning message seems to come from IDC.

I also tried it with the default wordpress theme so it's certainly not that.

Thanks for letting us know. We're looking into a fix. -
Inappropriate?Hello, the fact that longer comments time out the server is really annoying because a lot of people write comments and then loose them and are too lazy to write it again (understandably!!!).
PLEASE fix this quickly by either:
1) making sure that even longer comments go throught the server or
2) finding out how long a comment can be to go through the server and making this a limit, and not letting people even write longer than this before posting so that they already know they need to divide the comment in a few parts. (I actually think the picture db0 put up, while still annoying, is MUCH MUCH better than the server timing out and loosing the comment
I’m frustrated

Inappropriate?Dan, which website did you experience this with? How long was the comment that you were posting? Did you lose the comment? What web browser and version are you using? Did you receive an error message or did it just time out?
I’m confident

Inappropriate?I just started using IDC and my first commenter had difficulty with his lengthy comment. I had to break it into sections. Is this something that you are working on to fix?
I’m having problems!
-
Inappropriate? Thanks for contacting us Carol and for giving IDC a try. We are currently working on a fix for this and will have it soon. Could you please provide me with a link to your blog? I'd like to get an idea about how long the comment was.
Thanks,
Michael

Hi Michael,
Here is the link to the blog posting with the long comment (broken into three sections)

Inappropriate? Thanks Carol. I've chatted this over with the crew and we're going to look into finding a solution for this comment length issue. In the meantime I apologize for the inconvenience.
Kind regards,

Inappropriate?i would like to set a character limit on comments on my wordpress blog as i am getting essays and i want to limit to about 600 characters. anyone know how? also how can i allow googlebloggers to be able to post through their google bloggers account please?
vlad@vladtepesblog.com -
Currently we do not have a max character setting built, but we'll add it to our feature pipeline. Also, we do have OpenID support. Your readers should select the "Or post using OpenID" option when submitting their comment. -
Inappropriate?Michael,
My regular commenters are getting irritated by this comment limit.
See MoByte's comment: http://www.medianama.com/2009/01/223-...
it's been 8 months since this question was first asked by dB0. By when are you guys planning to do something about it?
I’m frustrated

Nikhil, I apologize for the delay. I checked MoByte's comments and they all seemed alright. Is this still occurring? -
Inappropriate?Same situation for me. Here is a link to a blog post with a lenthy 3 part comment at the bottom: http://www.costa-rican-real-estate.co...
Is there a fix in the works? Seems like maybe not since this issue has been around for 9 months now.
I would really like to encourage lengthy commenting, so at the moment Intense Debate is working against this.
Please let us know if this isn't going to be fixed, or if so, when.
Thanks!
Ben

Inappropriate? We've identified the issue. Unfortunately this is a limitation of the web browser. Because of the way browsers work, the only way comments can be posted in IntenseDebate is by including it in the URL of a script tag (we use JavaScript for this). IntenseDebate dynamically adds a script tag with all of the comment data in the URL, so all of the comment data has to fit in the script of the URL. All browsers limit the length of the script. We generally do not run into these issues with English since each character takes up less space.
Unfortunately we encounter these issues more often with foreign character sets because the character sets often need more than one "character" to store a single character in another language. So an English character takes up less character spaces then a foreign character (where a single foreign character might be converted to 4-8 characters for transfer). With this in mind, we are more likely to hit the browser limit with foreign characters.
We're investigating a possible solution for this. The fix would require a massive overhaul to the way IntenseDebate comments works on your blog. This is going to be a system change. We're currently redesigning the comment section and we're looking into including a fix for this. This is an extremely large project since it will change the way ID operates. No ETA right now.
Rest assured though this is a problem that we are very serious about fixing.
Thanks,
Michael

Well, it would seem that I'm involved with the right people. Thanks for this reply Michael. I'm sorry that it turned out to be such a fundamental problem. I'll likely hang in there until you get it fixed. It will be helpful to be kept up on the progress of the script re-write if at all possible. Longer comments are pretty important to what I'm trying to do with my blog.
Thanks again,

Inappropriate? What's the status of this issue? I just installed Intense Debate on our website, and our very first commenter reported that her (not THAT lenghty) comment - in Danish - wasn't accepted due to the lenght limitation issue. Please, fix this as we're highly dependant on being able to write longer comments!! Otherwise, Intense Debate seems to be a very good and user friendly comment system - but so far, it's almost unusable (to us, anyway).
