Cannot log in with OpenID
I try to log into ID with a LiveJournal OpenID and receive the error "Invalid username. Usernames must be between 3 and 30 characters." I seem to receive this message from both an affiliate site (hijinksensue.com) and the main ID site.

We require a nickname or fullname be provided during the OpenID authentication. We use it for your display name on comments you've created. Is it possible this value is not being sent?
If you don't mind this might be easier to diagnose if you were to send me the full url of the page that provides the error. Just email it to me at support@intensedebate.com if you get a chance.

Inappropriate? Thanks for your reply, Jon. I'm sending an email, as requested. For completeness and history's sakes, I'm posting here too.
I've done some further testing, and the error occurs with both log in and sign up. (Sign up is where I originally encountered the error. Sorry I forgot to mention that.) I've done all my testing at http://intensedebate.com/ with the OpenID http://bhael.livejournal.com/
Environment:
- Windows XP SP2
- Firefox 2.0.0.12
- Addons:
--- BugMeNot 1.3
--- Console2 0.3.9.1
--- DOM Inspector 1.8.1.12
--- Extension List Dumper 1.12.0
--- Firebug 1.05
--- Flashblock 1.5.5
--- Google Notebook 1.0.0.19
--- GooglePreview 3.8
--- Greasemonkey 0.7.20080121.0
--- IE Tab 1.3.3.20070528
--- Java Console 6.0.03
--- JavaScript Debugger 0.9.87.2
--- Session Fix 0.3.1
--- StumbleUpon 3.16
--- User Agent Switcher 0.6.10
--- Web Developer 1.1.4
These are the steps I originally followed for sign-up (as well as I can remember/recreate, anyway):
1. Navigate to http://hijinksensue.com/2008/02/19/hi...
2. Enter some value in the comment box ("test")
3. Click the link "Or post using OpenID" (javascript: showSignupOpenIDNewThread();)
4. Enter my OpenID URL (http://bhael.livejournal.com/)
5. Check the box labeled "Claim my comments!"
6. Click the "Submit Comment" button (javascript: postComment(0);)
7. Approve http://intensedebate.com/ for LiveJournal identity verification at http://www.livejournal.com/openid/app...
8. Receive message, "Error! Invalid username. Usernames must be between 3 and 30 characters." at http://intensedebate.com/handleOpenID...,identity,return_to&openid.sig=aqzodK584T0m6U7rkpB9JjpnzwY%3D
These are the steps I followed for further testing of sign-up:
1. Navigate to http://intensedebate.com/
2. Click the link "Signup" (http://intensedebate.com/signup)
3. Click the link "Use OpenID" (javascript: showOpenID();)
4. Enter my OpenID URL (http://bhael.livejournal.com/)
5. Click the button "Create Account" (javascript: document.getElementById('frmLocalSignup').submit();)
6. Receive message, "Error! Invalid username. Usernames must be between 3 and 30 characters." at http://intensedebate.com/handleOpenID...,identity,return_to&openid.sig=jRlrpSHKGw3lRVWFmdAogyQ3N6I%3D
For log in:
1. Navigate to http://intensedebate.com/
2. Click the link "Login" (javascript: showHeaderLogin();)
3. Click the link "Use OpenID" (javascript: showHeaderLoginOpenID();)
4. Enter my OpenID URL (http://bhael.livejournal.com/)
5. Click the button "Login" (javascript: document.getElementById('frmLoginOpenID').submit();)
6. Receive non-styled message "Invalid username. Usernames must be between 3 and 30 characters." at http://intensedebate.com/handleOpenID...,identity,return_to&openid.sig=Hprje9cxuX7ivhZTIglkoHZLTvM%3D
I'm honestly confused myself why I tried logging in after getting an error on sign-up. Regardless, it hints at at least one other problem. Here are my thoughts:
1. I was actually signed up, but my user record is corrupted (missing a username), hence the error.
2. I was not actually signed up, and the login process is erroneously returning the error instead of prompting me to sign up.
Thanks for your help. -
Inappropriate?Do you have an update on the status of this issue? The problem still occurs for me.
-
Inappropriate?I followed the same steps as Bill above, both on an intensedebate enabled blog as well as on the main site, and saw the same 3-30 error.
My OpenID url is http://talesfromthedadside.blogspot.com/, which has been implemented using Blogger's Draft system, but works in other places, just not with intense debate.
I’m frustrated

Inappropriate?I had the same problem with my myopenid.com ID. I added a fullname and a nickname to my openID and now I can login without a problem.
Perhaps a better error message is called for? -
Inappropriate?Do you have any updates on the status of this issue? I'd really like to start commenting on my favorite ID-enabled blogs, but your (LJ) OpenID support is still broken.
-
Inappropriate?Any updates yet? Trying to use livejournal.com's OpenID, and running into that trouble too...
-
Inappropriate? It would be nice if one could just log in with an OpenID regardless of whether or not it provides a nickname (obviously LJ and Blogger [which I use] don't), and be prompted to enter one if it's absent.
I just signed up for a full account after receiving this same error, thinking I'd associate my OpenID (worked) and then log in with it (didn't work).

Inappropriate?I have this problem too although instead of getting an error for "invalid usernane" I get
It seems you don't have an accout yet. You need to signup first.
I am using my own WP blog as an OpenID provider which then authenticates with myopenid.
I've set up my IDC profile to have my blog addess as OpenID, myopenID.com is logging a successful authentication and is sending back a full name and nickname.
It's not a biggie since I just login with a password but would be nice to have it fixed
I’m Annoyed
