To anyone who finds this thread: I've identified that this bug seems to come from when you don't have a title configured in your WordPress blog under Settings > General > Blog Title. If you set something in there, then it will work.
I'll be making some changes to fix this in the future, but up to and including version 2.2 of the ID plugin has this problem.
I’m silly (but glad we figured it out!)

Inappropriate?Keith, that error shows up when you enter in the wrong IntenseDebate username and password. If you send me an email at support@intensedebate.com I can reset the password for you so you can login.
Austin -
Inappropriate?e-mail sent, though I thought I double checked that I had input the right info... and I can log into the Intense debate site and see my info...
-
-
Inappropriate?Ok, I have reset my own password now several times. I also tried using the IntenseDebate user key to no avail... This seriously should not be a problem to vex me so...
I’m bordering on pissy.
-
Inappropriate?Austin, I just resent the e-mail.
-
Inappropriate?I keep trying to make this plugin work but I keep getting the same error message, even after my password was reset by support at Intense Debate. Support suggested it could be a problem with my host not allowing server to server calls, but given it talks to Live Journal, Facebook and twitter with no problem I don't think that is the issue. This seems like it would be an awesome plugin if I could only get it to recognize my login.
And yes I can login into the Intense Debate website with no problems whatsoever so it's not like I am incapable of typing in the right information.
I’m annoyed and frustrated.
-
Inappropriate?Keith, I apologize for the frustration. What web browser are you using? If you're using Safari, could you please try using Firefox? Please let me know.
Thanks for your patience.
I’m confident
-
Inappropriate?I too am having this problem...I've set intense debate up with my personal blog and it worked great. I'm trying to set it up with my dad's blog (with a different intense debate account) and no matter what I try it won't accept my credentials in the plugin screen.
I have reset my password, even created two different ID accounts and nothing works. I am POSITIVE I have entered BOTH the username and password correctly as the same credentials get me into the ID website just fine.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?Michael,
I am using Firefox, also it does the same thing in IE and Safari. Also I uninstalled the plugin and reinstalled to no avail, same error message each time.
I think my next step will be to deactivate my various plugins one by one to see if that does anything.
I’m annoyed, but at least I have not started threatening the computer yet...
-
Inappropriate?I have tried the same as Keith. I have tried in both FF and Safari, I have also uninstalled, deleted and reinstalled and activated the plugin several times.
-
Inappropriate?@Josh and @keith: Can you let me know your blog url's so I can take a look?
-
Inappropriate?Jon, it is karmicdebt.net.
-
Inappropriate?Jon, the one I'm working on trying to get up is faithfootprint.com
-
Inappropriate?@keith and @Josh - It seems you're both in the same situation. We haven't created a blog account for either of you yet, but I don't see anything significant in any of our error logs.
I'd suggest clearing all the settings in your plugin to see if maybe our remote queue has an issue. Unfortunately since the plugin isn't fully activate this is non-trivial, but I'll walk you through the steps here.
First, log into your WP admin panel.
Then, navigate to your-blog-url/wp-admin/options.php
This page will give you a full list of options for your blog - you want to find the one labeled 'id_signup_step' and change it to 3 - then save (bottom of the page).
Once that is done, go to the IntenseDebate settings page in your admin panel. You should now see a button to "Reset IntenseDebate Plugin". Push that button and it should clear everything IntenseDebate has stored in your blog.
After that, try running through the registration process one more time.
Sorry it's a bit clunky, but I hope this helps. -
Inappropriate?Jon, thanks for the help. I logged in and went to the options.php page and I don't see the 'id_signup_step' option. All I have for the 'id's' is:
id_debug_log
and
id_request_queue
I am using wordpress.org 2.7 -
Inappropriate?I'm afraid the issue might be happening earlier in the process than I thought in that case. To be sure, would you mind emailing us at support@intensedebate.com? Then I can send you a plugin that, when activated, will clear all the IntenseDebate settings.
If that still doesn't work I'm afraid it might be an issue with your PHP configuration not allowing it to communicate with our IntenseDebate servers. -
Jon, I'm just now having this same problem only I'm designing a new version of CGBlog.org on my localhost using MAMP. Our current running blog is on Blogger, works great! My question to you would be where in said PHP config would this problem be stemming from? As it's a localhost it may be a little hard for you, but any help would be great. ~R -
Inappropriate?I will be e-mailing you momentarily.
-
Inappropriate?Josh has more options there than I do since on the general options page I don't see any id options at all.
-
Inappropriate?hey, Jon I e-mailed you about the plugin but have yet to recieve anything in response.
-
Keith, have you heard back from us yet? If you haven't could you please email us again and site this specific case and include this URL? We've recently switched to a new ticketing system and are still ironing it out.
Thanks for your patience. -
Inappropriate?I am too having this problem. I already have two tickets at Intense Debate. I am using FireFox already (and already saw the stock msg to not use Safari). I know it will communicate since ID is installed on my other WP 2.7 blog on the SAME server. I keep emailing ID and I keep getting the same few answers over and over again. I already used the ClearID.php file, too. I am banging my head against the wall. We've reset, we've redone. Everything. I want it to work on nooccar.com. HELP!
I’m frustrated
-
I believe Jon has been helping you via email. He'll be in contact shortly. Thanks again for your patience. -
Inappropriate?I was having this problem, too -- as it turned out -- it was a result of the password I generated for intensedebate. It had some crazy characters (+./,) in it. While it was fine on intensedebate.com, it would not let me login with that password from within wordpress O_O! Changing it the password to contain only alphanumeric characters resolved the problem.

-
Inappropriate?Hey Ben, you nailed it. It was the extra characters like *#% that were not letting me login via the WP Admin area.
With just an alpha-numeric password - I got in smoothly!
Wow, this was really frustrating for few hours - but I got the solution here within 5 minutes of searching!
Thanks guys!
I’m thankful,happy

Inappropriate?Update from me too... So after the Intense Debate people said they'd help me continue to figure this out and they were going to send me a file that would help track an error, I wholeheartedly agreed. Guess what? They stopped writing to me. Totally. I kept writing to them. They didn't answer.
So.... I went to DISQUS. It worked like a charm immediately, and I've had NO PROBLEMS since. I am sorry Intense Debate didn't work for me. And congrats for anyone who it does work for!
I’m done
-
Inappropriate?I haven't had any luck getting ID working for me. Password was a simple 6 letter word. No characters. No numbers. No symbols. Still gives me the same "Login failed. Check your credentials" error.

I have my blog name configured, but I have that section of WP tags commented out in the header file. Would that prevent this from working. I still can't login to ID comments in my WP admin, but I can login directly at the ID site. -
Inappropriate? Thanks a lot Beau and Michael. the problem was indeed missing blog title and as recommended by Beau i added the blog title ID started working. i could log in via the WP admin and complete the setup. So after more than a month of research and finally help with ID team i was able to solve the login error.
I have few questions to the ID team.
* now that it is set up can i remove blog title ? i had it as blank earlier. but based on your suggestion i have put GigaThoughts as the title and it worked. i want to remove it ??
* the main page layout is proper and looks neat and clean but when i click any of the internal pages the side bar loads is skewed you can check it here http://www.gigathoughts.com/ looks fine ... .internal page skewed : http://www.gigathoughts.com/useful_li...
* the comment link for specific post (http://www.gigathoughts.com/useful_li...)says it has 4 comments but when you click the link the comments are not there so where can i find my comments. ???? I have all the comments for rest of the posts.
You helps on this is highly appreciated.
I’m happy that at least ID is working but have issues before it works seamlessly
-
Inappropriate?Hmmmmmm interesting solution but since I have a graphic header that I prefer NOT have the blog title written over it then perhaps I'll wait for an updated version that does not have this bug. Either that or do some research on how to make the blog title invisible.
I’m undecided
-
Inappropriate?Kieth do let me know if you find the trick to make blog title invisible or i will have to unfortunately uninstall ID as well.
I’m undecided
-
Inappropriate? You can hide the text using CSS (you'd use "display: none;" on that specific element), but you can remove the title as soon as you've connected with ID in the first step of the plugin.
I'm working on a fix for this on our end as we speak though, so you hopefully won't need to upgrade or anything, it'll just start working miraculously :)
@Amit, I'm looking into your other issues to see what's going on and will post again here once I have an update.
I’m confident
-
Inappropriate? Thanks beau. it would nice if you can check on my other issues and reply at the earliest as untill then i will have to keep my layout skewed for you to see and check the problem and that wont be good for my readers.
I will remove the title so that it dosent appear on top of my logo in the header.
looking forward to your help
I’m thankful
-
Inappropriate?#header-in .title {display: none} worked for me thanks awaiting for the layout change and comments disappearing for one post ..kindly help
I’m thankful
-
Inappropriate?Beau,
still awaiting your reply on the skewed layout and missing comment for one post.
please try and respond at the earliest as my site is live with that funny layout.

-
Inappropriate?Amit, I've taken a look at your site, and it appears that the clash is coming from this line, which I believe will be in your comments template file (comments.php normally):
<noscript> Currently you have JavaScript disabled. In order to post comments, please make sure JavaScript and Cookies are enabled, and reload the page. Click here for instructions on how to enable JavaScript in your browser.
</noscript>
The problem arises because that is part of a block of content that gets nested in another <noscript> tag, which becomes invalid and throws the nesting out in your HTML.
If you remove that line, the layout seems to snap back to where it's supposed to be. Our system is supposed to detect and avoid this, so I'm going to look at improving how that works to prevent this happening in the future.
Beau</noscript>
I’m happy to find this fix at 5pm on a Friday!
-
Inappropriate? Thanks. But the noscript tag is not there in my code. I have also checked all other php files but could not find the tag anywhere. Please find below the code of my comments.php file:
<?php // Do not delete these lines
if ('comments.php' == basename($_SERVER['SCRIPT_FILENAME']))
die ('Please do not load this page directly. Thanks!');

I’m confused
-
Inappropriate? The CSS fixed worked... though of course I did it way too early in the morning and overwrote my good CSS with an older version that was not so good.... but it worked.
-
Inappropriate?@Amit, is the noscript tag perhaps in your single.php file then, right after the comments template is called?
-
Inappropriate? The new version of the plugin (v2.3) addresses this problem and sets a default blog title on IntenseDebate automatically if you don't have one set up in your WordPress blog.
I’m happy
-
Inappropriate?Beau my friend why dint your guys built something in this version that will take care of that noscrip tag. i searched all the files but couldn't find noscript tag. is there any other way i can solve this issue ???
I am not a techie so i just opened each php file from the WP admin and did a CRTL F for </ noscript > and also only noscript but could not find it anywhere.
For me the following issues still remain:
* the main page layout is proper and looks neat and clean but when i click any of the internal pages the side bar loads is skewed you can check it here http://www.gigathoughts.com/ looks fine ... .internal page skewed : http://www.gigathoughts.com/useful_li...
* the comment link for specific post (http://www.gigathoughts.com/useful_li...)says it has 4 comments but when you click the link the comments are not there so where can i find my comments. ????
I have all the comments for rest of the posts but this post comments havent got synched as it still shows in my wordpress comments list.
Initially i was happy that ID finally started working but this layout thing and comments missing is seriously making me frustrated
please help Michael / Beau u guys there ? are ya guys listening and willing to help ?
Amit
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?@Amit -- I talked to our Lead Developer and he pointed out that it's also possible that one of your other plugins might be dynamically adding the noscript tag to your comment form.
I'm going to be working on adding some code to try to detect this sort of thing from happening, but I need to find some samples so that I know what to look for. If you find that any of your plugins are adding the noscript, please let me know which one it is. It's also possible that it's in the functions.php file in your theme perhaps?
As for your other issue, where there are some comments that aren't appearing - it looks like perhaps they weren't imported to ID properly. Can you please try using the "Reset Plugin" button at the bottom of the IntenseDebate page in your WordPress admin to do the import again, and we'll see if that picks them up.
Thanks,
Beau -
Inappropriate?Hi Beau,
i figured out the missing comments. they were not hand written comments they were pingbacks and i am assuming that ID does not synchs pingbacks. If ID synchs pingbakcs then i will have to use the reset option and for the other issue there is not luck on the functions.php file as well
I disabled all the plugins and tested only ID plugin and it worked fine. Then i started activating each plugin one by one and testing if ID is still skewing my layout.
Finally to my great disappointment i found out that it is the WP-SpamFree plugin that is creating the conflict. Now this is one of the most important plugin. I am sure you would have heard about it but still here's the link to the plugin homepage : http://www.hybrid6.com/webgeek/plugin...
and here is the link to wordpress plugin page: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/w...
Please help. i cant do without Spamfree and ID both.
I’m confident
-
Inappropriate?Beau Dude i have figured out the last part. now you gotta tell me how do i do it.
When i clicked on the edit part of WP-SpamFree plugin there are these noscript tags but they are at multiple places which i am pasting below. please suggest which one should i remove so my plugin works perfectly and allows ID to load properly as well.

Inappropriate?@Amit, rather than delete anything, try commenting some lines out. In PHP you do that by adding "//" (2 forward slashes) at the start of the line, which tells PHP to just ignore that line.
In each of the cases above, you want to put the 2 slashes at the very start of lines that contain "Currently you have JavaScript disabled..."
So just make sure that the whole chunk is on one line, then add the slashes at the start to make them look something like this:
//echo '<noscript> Currently you have JavaScript disabled. In order to post comments, please make sure JavaScript and Cookies are enabled, and reload the page. Click here for instructions on how to enable JavaScript in your browser.</noscript>'."\n";
If you can't get it, you can send the file to support@intensedebate.com and I'll check it out for you.

Inappropriate?@ beau have sent an email to you where i have given the entire code for the plugin. kindly make the necessary changes and send me a file which i can directly upload and replace as i am not from technical background.
