Short answer: You can't.
This is something we're hoping to implement very soon. We're toying with a bunch of different ideas. What do you think would be the most useful:
1. An admin panel inside the comments where you can disable and enable things like this
or
2. A page on the Intense Debate main page where you can disable comments from a list of blog posts.
What do you think?

1 year ago? Any update? Seems it should be fixed so commenting can be turned on or off for a post or page withing the post or page admin. But its not, so we're going to uninstall intense debate. For example, we don't want people to comment on a page that has a form for contacting us. But since we can't turn off comments there we have people posting an open comment who think they're using the "contact us" form. Yikes! -
Hello, sorry this thread seems to have never got updated. This feature has been added, you just go to the permalink (where the comments are, for instance on your contact page) logged in as an admin of that blog, and in the top select Admin options, and then Disable comments for this blog post. Sorry about any inconvenience. -
Thanks for the reply Isaac.
I understand what you're saying, but it doesn't fully turn off commenting. On pages where we don't want a comment area I have turned it off in every area possible (on the post admin, and where you described).
But I still get this message at the bottom of pages that have "commenting disabled":
"Comments
Commenting disabled
Further commenting on this blog post has been disabled by the blog admin.
There are no comments posted yet. Be the first one!"
The "be the first one!" is a link, but it does nothing.
Anyway, I would have expected that none of the content about commenting above would display if I've set comments to "off" for that page.
How to I get there with Intense Debate? Seems like a standard request. -
I'm right with you dwferrell. I just installed Intense Debate, but was disappointed when I learned that I couldn't turn off the Commenting user interface elements on our home page. As you stated, the "be the first one" link needs to be gone if comments are turned off and I would like to be able to remove all the tags including ""Comments
Commenting disabled
Further commenting on this blog post has been disabled by the blog admin." For my regular Wordpress installation I could write an if statement in my theme files, but at least at first glance this doesn't seem to be possible with the Intense Debate files. ID Team, is there a way to turn it off in the plugin PHP files? -
Ok, this isn't good and we're considering turning off Intense Debate for the following reason. On a "contact" page we only want people to use the contact form, but someone who thought they were sending a private email accidentally posted a comment instead (because we couldn't turn off the comments). The comment is actually "unapproved" so it shouldn't even show, but it is. http://www.trialandheirs.com/?page_id=40 -
dwferrell, you mean you didn't notice that the comments were not turned off from the wordpress admin page until someone posted that comment? because I see their closed now. The comment is probably unapproved in the wordpress system itself, not intense debate. To unapprove it there I think you need to enable to ID content management in your wordpress installation (it's an option on the ID settings panel) -
When I login to IntenseDebate.com it says "Comments awaiting moderation: No comments in moderation."
That would lead me to believe that the blog can moderate, but nope. -
dwferrell -- I figured it out! You can add
<?php if(!comments_open())echo '<style type="text/css?>#idc-container-parent { display: none !important }</style>'; ?>
to footer.php in your theme. That did the trick! -
Inappropriate?I think option two would be the most useful to more bloggers.
Some posts, I may simply want to close comments; if they are controlled through an admin panel inside the comments, it would require a post to be published, then the admin has to go to their site, click into the comments, and shut off comments. Meanwhile, a reader using their RSS feed has read the entry and commented. (I've gotten some comments within seconds of posting!)
The first option has its merits, particularly when shutting down comments that may have gotten out of hand or to close a contest but I'm not sure if it's the complete solution.
It's exciting to see Intense Debate grow and flex to meet its users needs. I think this is one of the best commenting systems I've seen!
I’m happy
-
Inappropriate? We're all about user feedback. Intense Debate is shaped by those who use it, so we value your thoughts highly.
I think we'll end up doing both, as they both have advantages. Thanks again for the feedback!

Inappropriate? For my blog, I automatically close comments 2 weeks after the post is made. I'd like to see this feature in ID.
-
Inappropriate? Is it possible to turn off comments for a specific kind of page (not just a post, but a page type)? It is not built into my theme and I'd like to avoid having code it myself in WP.
-
Inappropriate?I'm surprised to see that we still can't turn off comments for a single post. I figured this would be in place by now. Any progress?
I’m sad
-
Inappropriate?Vjack, this has already been implemented. If you're logged in, then you should see an "Admin" option just before the comments begin, expand that and you can turn comments off from there

Inappropriate?Yes - I see but there is still a comment display saying, "commenting disabled"
Plus there is a box with login info and a gravatar
Can't we just remove all intense debate info from certain posts? Just like wordpress does?
If you don't want comments on a certain post, surely you don't want anything else either... any suggestions?
I’m SAD
-
Inappropriate?Running into the same problem. Since I use wordpress as a CMS, I have pages that I don't want to behave like a blog post. So, using the wordpress quick-edit I disable pings and comments on certain pages, but IntenseDebate seems to take over anyway.
How do we get IntenseDebate to honor our page settings? -
Inappropriate?Yes, have this same problem. I had expected to be able to turn off comments for a post or page on the actual post or page admin. This is where you should be able to manage it, because its per page.
I’m unsure
