Why are some of my imported comments failing to appear and why are some of them repeated?
I imported old blogger comments into ID 3 times because they did not seem to come through correctly, but now I notice that the same comment is repeated 3 times on some of my pages. I assume this is my mistake for being impatient, but now I'm wondering how to correct it.
The initial problem I encountered was that not all of the comments were appearing on my blog. After waiting for a little while after importing, the comments [#] link began to work, but when I click on it, I only see about half of the comments that are supposed to be there.

Hey, sorry for not getting back to you sooner, we've been working on a big release for Intense Debate and I'm mostly a part of the development team after all.
Anyway, I've revisited your blog, looked into your trouble, and I think the solution is easier than we both think it is. I think the problem is that when you imported Intense Debate was set to show up on all blogs. If you change the setting to just show up on "Posts without comments", you should be all set!
You find this setting by logging into Intense Debate, located the blog's tab, then find Settings. It should be the topmost setting on the right hand side of the page. Let me know how it goes.
I'll look into the graphical issues (it's probably a side effect of the recent release).

First off: Thanks for your help! It's great that we get this kind of help. Some bugs are really hard to track...
The ID exporter does not touch your blog posts, so nothing weird can happen with them if you. However, you should not export as the comments are already in Blogger - we don't "move" the comments when you import, just copy them. So if you exported your current comments, you would have duplicate comments in Blogger (bad), which we can't help you with.
There's no way to backup a normal Blogger blog as far as I know.
Here's what you want to do:
1. Start with a clean slate. Uninstall ID completely and make sure it's out of Blogger. You find the link to uninstall under your blog's tab on the Intense Debate main site, then go to the Tools sub-tab. It's fairly straightforward. Delete the Intense Debate account for your install as well.
2. Look over your comments on your blog, make sure everything looks like it should.
3. Install Intense Debate again, starting from www.intensedebate.com/install. Just enter in your credentials and make sure "Replace comment system... Only on posts without comments" is selected. Complete the install.
4. You should now be all set! Let me know how it went :)

If you want to go through the trouble of uninstalling Intense Debate, copy all comments from 2-3 blog posts, and then install ID again to see which ones that went missing, it would probably help us to determine what the problem is. You can never be sure though, it might be some technical aspect of it that makes you lose comments...
You can always just display ID on posts that does not have any comments currently. That would be an easy middle ground, where you wouldn't have to worry about losing any comments at all. What do you think?
I can also have you talk to our developer Jon, maybe he has some questions about the comments you're missing. Let me know.

Hey, we've written a script that deletes duplicate comments and executed it on your blog. Your duplicate comments should now be removed!
It's unfortunate that you lost some comments in the importing process, I'm sorry for that. I hope you still find Intense Debate as useful as we think it is. Cheers!

Hello again, unfortunately the importer is still in Beta, it's not perfect. I'm afraid there's not much we can do about the lost comments.
It would help us alot if you could look them through and see if there is a pattern of which comments didn't get imported.. You know? Maybe special characters, anonymous email, posting with or without a blogger account, etc. That'd be truly awesome.
Jon has written a script for you to remove the duplicate comments in your Intense Debate installation. This means you won't have to go through and delete all of the dupes manually. Yay!
We'll remove the duplicates as soon as we find some time today. Thanks again for all your help and feedback.

I've looked at a couple of your blog posts, and they all have the correct Comment # count vs the actual comments on the permalink... Even though the duplicates offset the Comment # quite a bit =/
Could you give me a link to a post where you've seen this problem? Thanks.

Inappropriate?Hey, I'm sorry to hear you're having trouble. You have physically imported the comments multiple times into the database, which unfortunately there's no good way around. What you can do is you go into the blog tab in Intense Debate, and then look for Comment History. Here you will see a list of all blog posts you've made that are in the Intense Debate system, and you'll find the comments associated with them. You can delete the duplicates from here.
However, it's bad that you couldn't import your comments properly. We don't want this to happen again in the future, so may I ask what blog URL you were importing comments to? Also, just to be sure, by "old blogger" you mean old template blogger, right?
Thanks!
I’m confident
-
Inappropriate? Thanks for getting back to me, Isaac. The blog url is ipostupost.blogspot.com. I went into intense debate and started deleting duplicates. It looks like it will take a while, but if that's the only way, then I will continue.
When I said "old blogger" I just meant they were comments that were posted on my blog before I installed Intense Debate. I believe I use a new blogger template, as I've only had it for about 2 months.
The issue that I'm still encountering that caused me to import my comments several times in the first place is that while the number of comments is correct in the "comments [#]" link, when I click on it only a small number (about 1/3) of the comments actually show up.
Thanks, Jordan.
I’m still concerned but working through it.

Inappropriate?Hey Isaac,
I may need your help with finding a way to show you that the numbers aren't matching up. You're right, the numbers do match up between the Comment # count and the permalinked comments, but the issue is that apparently not all of my comments imported from Blogger. For instance, for this post: http://ipostupost.blogspot.com/2008/0..., I currently have 6 comments in Intense Debate, but I should have at least 11 based on the number I can see when I manage my comments on blogger. Unfortunately, I can't view the missing comments because when I click on any comments links in blogger, I only see the Intense Debate comments. -

Inappropriate?Hey Isaac,
Thanks for fixing the duplicates. That's great. I'm really disappointed with the loss of the comments though. It looks like more than half of the comments that were previously there did not make it through the import. I don't think any of them had special characters, but some might have had html code. Though, I doubt that all of the missing ones did.
My "edit posts" page on blogger still lists the correct number of comments. It makes me wonder what would happen if I uninstalled Intense Debate. Would my old comments reappear? Then we might be able to examine them better to see why they didn't transfer over. As it is right now, I can't even look at the ones that are not on Intense Debate.
I definitely want to continue using Intense Debate, but I really need all of the comments there due to the nature of the blog as a community art project. It's a little ridiculous to say, but it really is like tiny pieces of art have been lost in limbo. If I could find a way to access them, I'd even be willing to repost them myself through Intense Debate. What do you think about the possibility of retrieving the lost comments?
I’m sad about my missing comments.

Inappropriate?Hi Isaac,
That's a good idea to only use Intense Debate for new posts. That way I can keep the old ones and still have all the benefits that ID provides. What do you suggest for getting my old comments back. Should I export or uninstall?
If I export them, would it just be sending over the comments that have been collected by Intense Debate? Cause in that case it might be necessary to uninstall so that I can have access to all the old comments.
Before doing this, do you have any suggestions for backing up my blog/posts/comments in the event of something strange happening? I'll save the template, but and everything, but I want to make sure I don't lose posts.
And yes, I'd be happy to let you know if I find any common thread amongst the missing comments to see what cause them to fail at importing.
I’m slowly figuring out what to do about this.

Inappropriate?ok i have the same problem here.. i followed all isaac's suggestions.. i even uninstalled ID twice and installed them back again.. both times I lost comments (in ID, not blogger) and had repeated twice and thrice each time..
i have decided to uninstall for good, but i like the idea of ID so i m gonna keep a close eye on this. The moment u guys fix this wretched bug and I will be the first person to sign up once more :)
I’m not that happy, but willing to give ID a second chance.
-
Inappropriate?Ok, I might finally get around to uninstalling ID sometime soon and then reinstalling it but only using it on new comments. When I do this, will I lose all the comments that were made while I have been using ID? I don't want that to happen.
Also, you said to delete the ID account. Will that mean I'll have to make an entirely new one when I reinstall? -
Inappropriate?Hey Isaac,
I'm still waiting on a reply to my question about what will happen when I uninstall Intense Debate. I need to know whether I will lose the comments that have been made through Intense Debate (especially since you suggested that I 1) Not export my comments because then they might be doubled in blogger, and 2) Delete my Intense Debate account before I reinstall.
I'm really enjoying Intense Debate (particularly the threading of comments), but I do want my missing comments back and I would be glad to do some research for you guys as to why they might not have imported correctly. I just don't want to mess up what I have going thus far with Intense Debate.
Also, a strange thing has been happening recently where the comments section does not load correctly and the little bars where people's names are located are strange colors and usually broken up by a weird graphic of some kind. It is usually fixed when I refresh the page. I'll take a screen shot of it if it happens again.
I’m waiting to get this issue resolved.

Inappropriate?I'm sorry that it didn't work out for you. The Blogger importer is still in Beta, and it has it's flaws.
If you don't need to import, however, Intense Debate should work just fine. All you have to do is make sure "Only display Intense Debate on posts without comments" is checked during the installation process. This can be changed easily afterwards too. Let me know if you need further help, and thanks for giving us a second shot!
-
Inappropriate?Hey Isaac, it's no problem. I figured something was up because you guys usually respond really quickly (I'm interested in the big release...where can I read about that?).
Anyway, when looking at the settings tab for my blog, I actually cannot find a place to change the settings to "posts without comments." I feel like I've seen this option before, but maybe only when I was importing my comments from blogger. Am I missing something? -
Hey Isaac, still waiting for a reply to my question about where I might find the setting you spoke about above. Thanks. -
Inappropriate?I also have the same problem. I have just installed this system in my blog http://positivensuccess.blogspot.com and imported old comments. But, all comments are not imported and of them, none is showing in my blog. My latest post had two comments but only only got imported and is still not showing in my post. It says "There are no comments posted yet. Be the first one! ". What actually happened.
And, the comment form is showing just below the post above the bookmarking button and category. I want the form to be open below the two. Where in template should I edit so that I can get this? -
Ok, I now have displayed the Feedburner feedflare and Categories correctly above the comment form in my blog and only one issue remain unsolved is not proper import of the old comments. -
Inappropriate?Hmm So I was an early adopter and had some of the same issues with some comments not appearing in ID after the import and some duplicates. You guys were great with helping me out with that. The comments that were imported came through with out names. This sucks!
Jon told me that you guys are working on a new importer that fixes this. Will we be able to replace the currently imported comments with the ones with names? Replacing them and not duplicating them?
I also have an issue with users posting 3 times because their comments seem to time out.
I’m frustrated
-
I too have noticed the time-out issue recently. It seems that most comments post immediately, only appearing to time out. I tend to get the perpetually revolving recycling icon, but when I refresh the page before it stops, there's my comment already posted. I think only one of my comments has actually timed out.
