The battery in my Roomba 4110 is not holding its charge.
Solution from iRobot - "Reset the Battery":
1) Turn Roomba over on its back
2) remove battery
3) turn Roomba back over
4) press and hold power button for 5 seconds (no lights will)
5) Turn Roomba over on its back
6) Reinstall battery
7) Allow Roomba to recharge for 16 hours uninterrupted (even if power lights indicate it's charged sooner)

This definitely does not work with the Roomba Discovery. And I can't understand how it could possibly work with other models.
-

From what I've read, you need to hold the button down for at least 15 seconds, and some suggest at least 30 seconds.
Also, the item I read said you need to let it charge uninterrupted for 72 hours before trying again.
Also also, I think you're supposed to run the battery down fully before doing this. And to prevent it in the future, always put the Roomba back on to charge after draining the battery.
I've got one charging on the 72 hour charge right now, so we'll see how it goes. -
-
It never worked for me and I tried the process several times. I ended up buying a replacement battery from Amazon.com for $40, which is still better that the $70 iRobot charges. Perhaps my battery was too far gone. However I don't believe this technique can work unless the roomba has some internal memory that can be reset by holding down the power button...

I have a Roomba Model No. 4110. I tried resetting the battery today at 3:45 cst. I'm anxious to see if this worked for Paul. Hoping not to have to buy another battery.
-
I took my battery out and now I can't even get it back in. Anyone help?
-
-
Impossible. The switch is not a mechanical switch so how does holding it down without power possible do anything? If there is a plunger switch in there, thats normally a spring type and that too will not reset. If you think its a plunger switch jamming or sticking so it doesn't completely make the electrical contact, Maybe.

Did not work for my Roomba Red. I think the previous owner ran the battery all the way down and then left it to sit for some long period of time. I think I read somewhere that that is a good way to kill your battery.
I'm going to have to just replace the battery, I guess. -
-
The suggestion is actually the exact same information that the Roomba site has about resetting batteries http://www.irobot.com/uk/support_vide... - so it must work if the battery is saveable. I have a roomba that is very sad and I'm going to try resetting the battery per the above instructions, hope it works :)

Upgrade- No thanks. Their reputation isn't exactly stellar here is it nor is the bogus fix it advice they give. My advice- Never trust a company that will not own up to a factory design issue, the failures it causes, recall it and repair it free.
BTW, If you need to be an engineer to fix or use this, no thanks and I'm surprised an MIT grad accepts this nonsense as OK. -

I have tried it several times ... does not work. I've had my unit for 2-years and I am on my third battery. I like the job it does. I use it 2 times per week, but believe I got hosed because of the battery.

I just did this with my Roomba Discovery. Our Roomba had been stuck under a bed uncharged for about 2 months and this did the trick! I left it charging for 72 hours though. It worked miracles! The Roomba would only run for about 1 minute (after charging) before doing this and it ran for a good 10 minutes just now. I've read that now I need to drain the battery completely and do this 1 or 2 more times to fully charge it.

I had this problem with this battery too, The solution was to clean the roomba with air compressor. You clean inside from fluff and dust. You must remove filters and battery before you clean. The battery will start working better. Also Roomba works better too.

The procedure does not actually reset the battery, as far as I can tell, it resets the charge cycle, sort of like resetting the PRAM on a computer. I reset 2 400 series Roombas today. One had a fully charged battery, and after I reset it and replaced the battery it started charging again. The other battery was completely drained. Indeed, I had recharged, then turned it on after the indicator light turned green, only have it start up beep 3 times and shut down. I will post back after 18 hours.
-
Neither of my Roombas will work. Resetting the battery did not help. I think i'm in the market for new batteries. Anyone know where I can find some at a reasonable price?

I purchased a couple of batteries online for $35 each and they work beautifully. No point messing with a dead battery. Rechargeable batteries have a life cycle of so many recharges before the cells will no longer hold a charge. It is then time to replace the depleted battery.

So, after removing the battery, and while then pushing the power button for five seconds (or thirty seconds), is the roomba supposed to be plugged in or not plugged in? The instructions aren't real clear.
If the battery is removed and the roomba is not plugged in, pushing the button could only have any effect if there is a mechanical latch that needs resetting (unlikely), or some means of energy storage (small battery? capacitor?) in the roomba.-
Roomba doesn't have to be plugged in to wall charger while you holding power button to reset.

I'm attempting this with 2 400 series roombas both batteries were fully charged (both roombas are refurbished units). Will see how far it goes. Here is a link to official iRobot UK site that has same instructions and video on battery reset process: http://www.irobot.com/uk/support_vide...

Works for me. I have model 4230. Turned the Roomba over, removed battery, turned it back up and pressed "power". Within 5 seconds I heard a click. Held the button for 15 seconds total. Have installed battery and it's working...with a full green light. Patty the Patriot

does it still work today?

It worked for me first time I tried it. (Of course, I left it plugged in for the recommended 72 hours). I have a refurb 400 series (I think - it's all red). Thanks for the great advice!

I have tried to reset the unit I have but no luck. The battery's I am finding on line have to be installed into the battery case. I have a lot of bits for my screw drivers but not a triangular one???
-
i have seen the screwdriver you need on ebay for about $3 and some of the batteries listed include the screwdriver...i bought my battery new from an ebayer for $30 including shipping for my roomba 2.1 400 series and was very satisfied...just be sure they have a great customer satisfaction ranking ....patience is a virtue...now if i could just find the part i need to fix my roomba....i need the white plastic part that the square end of the brush roller goes into....just don't know what to call it...sigh....

Calling them worked out better than any troubleshooting on my own after trying this. Next time I have a problem I'll just call...

I followed the reset battery procedure, and held the power button down for 30 seconds after battery removal.
Once the battery was re-installed, the roomba started working, and no more charging error codes!
Thanks -

i had the same problem. error 3.
got a new battery, charger and a old home base.
i've only managed to use it for 1 day and the same error 3 is back and with a damaged transformer too. -

If your Roomba 400/4100/5100 cannot charge its battery, even a new battery, an IC labelled "U11" is faulty. No one so far knows its value. That U11 is damaged so you will need to use an external battery charger for your battery.

it never hurts to get a new roomba battery, even just to have one as a backup. You can find them at places like NewRoombaBattery.com

When the irobot battery charger charges a battery it does it for X hours and stops. Reseting tells the charger to start a new charging cycle of X hours again and then stop. That is one reason the batteries will not last long because it causes the battery to not become fully uncharged. Reset works because the battery life cycle has been shorten due to the "memory" of the NiCad battery being less than full. You must each time before recharging completely exhaust the battery to maintain original battery life and to experience normal battery use with all NiCad batteries. Otherwise you should use the reset, it will work on a battery that is still good. Do it monthly if you schedule your irobot for an area needing less than full battery use.
The battery in my Roomba 4110 is not holding its charge.
Solution from iRobot - "Reset the Battery":
1) Turn Roomba over on its back
2) remove battery
3) turn Roomba back over
4) press and hold power button for 5 seconds (no lights will)
5) Turn Roomba over on its back
6) Reinstall battery
7) Allow Roomba to recharge. -

Orange light was flashing quickly and the battery would not charge.
I tried this and now the orange light is flashing normally, I think it is charging again.
A relief if I am saved from buying a new battery! -
-
I tried this and zero change. I tried a brand new battery and charged it for 24 hours-it was not working with the new battery either.
Both my charging system and the battery plus the contacts were checked at my local Battery Plus store and each was fine.
That approach simply doesn't work. -
-
What is this U11 code, and how do you figure out if this is the problem?
-
-
Just a quick update: this solution has worked for me, my roomba is now back to work. I am pleased to not have to buy a new battery.
-
-
rip off...it didn't work ...this is the 2nd roomba I bought and had the same problem with both of them. I think they make more $$ on the batteries. Neither roombas worked for the time they claimed. The most time I ever got from a charge was about half hour. Would not recommend buying one. The company gave me no satisfaction at all.

Nope none of that battery stuf re take it out, pres this, press that works. I got rid of this unrelable thing and will never be tempted to buy one again

don't send anymore helpful hints....I got rid of this piece of junk quite awhile ago, and will not be purchasing anymore of these stupid products...get me off this website

Its obviously a design flaw and the factory won't own up. Thats a company you should no longer do business with. None of that fix stuff works.
I had a pro check the charger and the battery, all working. Its a glitch in the unit, period.
I chucked the machine and will never buy anything from that brand again.
My online research showed me its a common issue and the factory has obviously not done a thing to remedy it. -
-
I'm on my 4th or 5th red Roomba. I've learned:-
Keep the unit blown out w/ compressed air. The filters last for ever that way.
Run the battery down all the way before recharging
Buy a spare battery & charger. Keep all plugged in when not in use.
If you are handy with a soldering iron, the Tenergy battery packs work well.
Don't expect the battery to last more than 2 years. -
