Hi,
Smartlook only supports <a> style links, not area-links like the ones you are using. Sorry.

Based on great user feedback, here's a list of common mistakes:
1. Do NOT change the Smart Look code before pasting it. We cannot help you if you change the code.
2. Do not place the code in a div tag, paragraph tag or any other tag. It must be placed right above the last body tag (if this is not an option: Make sure that it's on the same level as the body tag and NOT nested in other elements. The code must be placed below the last document link, or it will not work for all document on the page).
3. If you're using a CMS make sure our code is not auto-changed by your system and that it's placed correctly. Ask your CMS provider for help if you need it. (We do out-of-the-box integration with selective CMS vendors. If your vendor is not supported please refer them to Issuu and will make an effort to provide this functionality for your system also.)
4. When everything's setup correctly, don't forget to download your document once. This will import it to your Issuu account and activate Smart Look.
5. If Smart Look looks different than expected, it's probably because your CSS is conflicting with it. You need to tweak your CSS (we cannot help you with this).
6. Beware of third party javascipt tools, as they might interfere with Smart Look. We have made great efforts to shield the Smart Look code from outside influences, but some libraries are very intruding. If Smart Look behaves weird, then these libraries might be the cause of it. Please let us know if you run into trouble, so we have a chance to fix it.

Inappropriate?I have a problem, I dont get this part:
4. When everything's setup correctly, don't forget to download your document once. This will import it to your Issuu account and activate Smart Look.
.... What document should I download and from where?
THX -
Inappropriate?Hi Miriam.
Smart Look only works for document files hosted on your own server (e.g. 'Click to download PDF'). Once Smart Look is installed, simply click to download the file, as this will import the file to your Issuu account an convert it.

Hi Martin. Are you saying that the href has to be pointing to a local file? My website is hosted on Joyent (hosting company) and my documents are on BingoDisk (storage service), so the link to the document is a different domain than the website. I just want to clarify if that's the problem, or if it's just a matter of time before SmartLook kicks in, as others have indicated. Thanks. -
Inappropriate?Smart Look isn't working in ie6. In fact it makes every page that has the Smart Look code bring up an error and the user can't access the site. I know that is annoying to all developers and designers in the world, but it is still used by a large portion of those that access our website. Any thoughts on this, or a work around, or if it should work with ie6?
-
Hi Megan. Are you seeing the same error on http://ismartlook.com ? -
Yes. I can see ismartlook.com in ie6 and 7, so, it must be some other issue. I'll keep trying to figure it out. Might be an issue with the javascript. -
Same problem with IE6, no solution yet -
I haven't figured it out. ie6 doesn't like the smartlook javascript along with some other javascript on the page that I want to put it on. At this point, I'm just not using smartlook. -
Inappropriate?I have uses Smartlook on other sites... a Personal site and a CMS site and it has been working great. Be as i would like to use it for a different site, all i get is the download and it doesn't import into my library...
any resaon?
check out code at
http://versusdsn.com/guru2/index3.html
thanks for any help... by the way issuu rocks!!!! -
You need separate accounts for different domains. -
I did set up a NEw and separate account for each domain... It has been work before with the other site, but this one is giving me problems. -
Inappropriate?EVERYTHING is working great now... i think the problem was that i had <map> tag toward the bottom of my page right before
with out that it seems to work...</map>
I’m excited

Inappropriate?Hi,
I test it smartlook, for the browser issue, firefox or chrome it works fine, but when using explorer version 6, I got error, and the page quite, and the opened html page no display of file. -
Does this happen as well on http://ismartlook.com ? -
Inappropriate?Using IE 6 to open ismartlook.com was fine, but my html page may has conflicts with javascript code from IE browser which embed smartlook code, and now I alternative copy embed code to new plain html, then link that page as js link, it works as similar smartlook.
-
Inappropriate?Read the FAQ, but still didn't see a solution to my problem. Smartlook is not working on my site. Please advise. Thanks in advance.

Inappropriate?Hi,
My CMS links to media (e.g. PDFs) as media items like filename.ashx - I'm guessing Smartlook won't pick it up then? Any trick to make it work after all?
Thanks a lot!
- Jonas -
I am in similar position, we protect documents by providing a generic link to a PDF, like /assets/210. This link points to the real PDF file which could be uploaded to ISSUU but obviously SmartLook won't pick it up as the link does not contain ".pdf" extension. Is there any way to force SmartLook to kick in? I.e. setting the a class to "pdf"? -
Inappropriate?I downloaded the document and I see it is published in Issuu but every time I click it on my site it's still prompting me to download it. As you can see it is in my library, just not showing up on my test blog (http://fanceymusic.com).
I’m confused
-
I just clicked the PDF link on your site, and Smart Look works? -
Yes it works now. It took 2 days to finally work though...... It wasn't immediate like it is supposed to be. -

Inappropriate?I am having a similar issue, with one document that i upload recently... it is part of my smart look list, but when i click on the link it still wants to download... why is that?
The other smartlook links on my page are working perfectly..

I’m undecided

Inappropriate?Martin,
My CMS provider is squarespace. Do you have out of the box integration with them? Thank you -
No, not at this stage. But we have an awesome API that you might encourage Squarespace to look into (hint hint) :) -
Inappropriate? What happens to me is this: Too many redirects occurred trying to open “http://www.www.efekt.net/test/present.... This might occur if you open a page that is redirected to open another page which then is redirected to open the original page.
I’m a little puzzled - hope to get this sorted
-
Inappropriate?Hi,
I can't get it to work either.
Can anyone help me? I have this page set up:
http://www.exide.dk/industrial/ladere...
Thanks -
Inappropriate?Smartlook works when I view documents that have been published from my Mac, but the pdfs load in acrobat with the browser on every PC that ive tested it on. They are all running IE 7. Why do you suppose this is?
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?I can't seem to get it to work for me either. I believe I have all the code in the right place, but it always just prompts to save or open in both IE8 and firefox. I've saved it several times, but doesn't seem to work :(
Can anyone see why? The quick test page is here:
http://valyyn.co.uk/rota.htm
I’m confused
-
Inappropriate?Try using FireFox with FireBug extension, SmartLooks uses Console.log to output all logs, so it's easy to trace what's wrong.
You can also use FireBug Lite for IE (http://getfirebug.com/lite.html)
I’m thankful
-
Inappropriate?I would like to make my smartlook documents private on issuu, because they are only available to subscribers on my website. Is this possible?
-
Inappropriate?Dear Tomek,
Thank you. After looking at the log, I found out that my files, that didn't activate SmartLook, are placed on another server.
So I guess I have to move them around to get it to work.
Thank you for your guidance :o)
I’m resolved
-
Inappropriate?@Jonathan Dye: this is a bit complicated but doable, you need to manually upload your documents to issuu (as private, using their new uploading API) and then use returned document ids and pass them to embedded issuu viewer SWF.
If there's more requests I can roll a blog post/tutorial, just raise your hands.
I’m excited
-
Thank you! This is all still a little bit above my head, as I am still learning so if you are able to post a blog/tutorial, I would greatly appreciate it. -
Inappropriate?Not Found
The requested URL /services/pages/issuu.folders.list.html was not found on this server.
How do I find this information? -
Inappropriate? The API docs URL had changed
http://issuu.com/services/api/issuu.d...
I’m indifferent
-
Inappropriate? Is that the correct link, I still can't find the document types
-
Inappropriate?I can't find the name of the folders. That's the page that is missing.
-
Inappropriate? Why not just google for it? (http://www.google.com/search?client=s...)
First result reveals the new URL:
http://issuu.com/services/api/issuu.f...
I’m silly

Inappropriate?Hi!
I have read most of responses to the common problems with Smartlook but still cannot fix mine. Smartlook does not seem to be grabbing my files. Only once a file was sent to the library but was not converted successfully - not sure why. Could you please take a look at the code at www.usrbc.org - click on the first (left) picture under the "What's New? " section and let me know what the problem might be?
Thank you!
M. -
Have a look at the debug:
com.issuu: Inspecting candidate url - https://www.usrbc.org/pics/File/MOS_A...
com.issuu:Protocol mismatch - https
Apparently no HTTPS is allowed. -
Inappropriate?I thought that would cause a problem. Is it the SSL itself or just the "https" part of the link?
Thanks -
Inappropriate?Smartlook grabbed the pdf when I changed the link to "http" but again failed to convert it. I have converted the file in issuu library manually - is there a way now to add the converted file to Smartlook?
Thanks -
Smart Look uses the same conversion engine as with normal upload. Are you saying one fails and one doesn't? -
I have this same problem. If I upload a file using smartlook it will not convert, but if I upload it manually, it will convert. -

see the change log -
Inappropriate?Hi Martin,
Yes, the manual conversion works - Smartlook does not.
Separately, a questions regarding embedding shelves : is it possible to have publications from an embedded shelf open in Show with Formatting mode rather than Show on Issuu mode?
Thanks! -
Thanks. Shelf can currently only open in default Issuu formatting, but we'll upgrade it later. Stay tuned.
