Can I reply to an email from Sandy and tell her that it is done - that way I don't have to go to the web page and tell her. I've tried, and she simply says she doesn't understand. I've tried replying with "#1 @done" and she still doesn't know. I'd like to be able to say, essentially, "Thanks Sandy for the reminder, I finished it."

You can absolutely do all you can on the site via email.. all you need to do to update an item is remember to add "update", like so:
update @done
or:
update #1 @done
