Check list?

I'd like to create a list where each of the items is like a "todo" item. Where I can check it off when I'm done with that. The main reason I'd use this is for work, we have new computers coming in all the time, each of them with a lot of software to install and things to make sure of, and I'd like to reuse lists for this purpose. It'd just be easier than creating todo items for every thing on a list.

Is this possible now? If not, can it be in the future?

    You've got some great ideas. Being able to reuse lists, and having additional options for individual items in a list. (Like being able to tag them with @todo)

    I'm guessing that you'd want a way to copy a list, since you'd have to be able to create a new version of the list for the next project. Also, it sounds like you'd like a new type of list, where every item is a @todo. Or, maybe you'd be satisfied with the ability to tag individual items in a list. Such as being able to tag them with @todo and/or @done.

    Great ideas.

    However, my guess is that these features won't be implemented soon. So here's a suggestion for a workaround. Why don't you create a set of items tagged with both @todo and something else, like @project34?

    In fact, you could write a draft version of an email, and send it to Sandy again and again, whenever you had another project to complete. (Changing @project34 to @project35, etc.) This way would give you a series of items, all tagged with the project number. It would function as something kind of like a list. (At least, it's the best I can come up with right now.)

    For example:

    remember to install Windows XP @todo @project34

    remember to install antivirus software @todo @project34

    remember to install email client @todo, @project34

    Yes thank you, this is getting closer to what I want to have. I think being able to have something like:
    Remember computer check list @todo +
    * first thing
    * second thing
    * etc...

    Would be handy. That way you can just click on your list to view it as you would a normal list, but from that popup it gives you the option to check things off and clear the checks so you would have a clean list

    I tried doing what i mentioned above, it looked hopeful. It links to the email page with that check list in there, which would be perfect for me with the features above. Sadly you can't get back to that page again from any menu that I can find. So it just adds the items in that list to the todo list in one email.

    You've got another great idea, using the "remember +" power move. However, I can see some problems with the way you've tried to use it.

    See http://iwantsandy.com/help/lists

    First, remember that the "remember +" power move doesn't create a list. It creates a set of individual items. All items get the tags on the first line and possibly some of the other attributes (dates and text). The power move is essentially a shortcut for writing out every item longhand, like I did above.

    Because the resulting items are individual, and not part of a list, you'll need some way to group all the items together. (As part of a "virtual" list?) I suggest that you have all related items contain another tag (or extra piece of text) so that you can search for all related items. Searching for the tag "@project34" or the text "project 34" will result in Sandy displaying all the related items together.

    Second, "remember +" treats tags on the first line specially. Tags are *added* to every item in the list. Text and dates on the first line are "replaced" by things in the individual items. The text on the first line is *replaced* by any text in an individual item. A date in the first line is replaced by a date in any individual item. (Note that a date could be the text "tomorrow afternoon".)

    So, looking at your example, I see that the text "computer check list" will not be used at all. It will not be included in any of the individual items, because each individual item has it's own text that will replace it. "computer check list" will also not be used as the name of the list, because there is no list. So it won't be used at all. (Actually, "computer check list" would appear in the "context" section of the individual items. So you could search on it. This can be confusing, however.) There is no direct grouping of the items created by your "remember +" power move.

    Remember computer check list @todo +
    * first thing
    * second thing
    * etc...

    I suggest using a tag instead. (you'd probably also add a version number too.)

    Remember @computer_check_list @todo +
    * first thing
    * second thing
    * etc...

    The advantage to using a special tag, like "@project34" or "@machine34" is that it would allow you to click on the tag and view your items as you would a normal list. (All the related items would be listed together.) The tag would appear in the "tag cloud" and function kind of like a "folder", in that it holds multiple items.

    If you'd like, your tags can contain spaces. Just use quotes around the words. The tag will appear in your "tag cloud" with spaces and you just click on it like normal. However, if you need to directly search for the items with the tag, or you need to update the item, you'll have to be careful to write the tag the same way. (Using the quotes.)

    Here are some samples that I tried:

    Remember @"computer check list" @todo +
    * install application1
    * install application2
    * install application3

    Remember @"computer check list" for machine34 @todo +
    * install application1
    * install application2
    * install application3

    Remember computer check list for machine34 @todo +
    * install application1
    * install application2
    * install application3

    Remember computer check list @machine34 @todo +
    * install application1
    * install application2
    * install application3
