How To Specify Phone Number Type For Contact?

I would like to be able to enter specific phone numbers for contacts. For example, if I enter contact "Remember Joe Blow (248) 555-1212" I'd like to be able to identify that as a land-line or a cell phone or a work number. I get the impression that Sandy can identify the type of the number but I don't see any documentation regarding

a.) How to enter this in the e-mail

or

b.) Which ones (cell, home, business etc. etc.) work

Is this documented somewhere and I've missed it?
