I would like "Remind me to do X by " syntax :)
As a student, I have ongoing projects that have due dates that might be a week in advance, for example. If I tell Sandy:
Remind me that my essay is due this Monday
Then Sandy will remember the due date, but won't ever mention the essay again until Sunday.
I propose introducing "by <date>" syntax, that works as a shorthand for @todo basically. Instead of having to say "this Monday @todo", just say "by Monday". This preserves natural language flow and is the way I'd usually say it :)</date>

Inappropriate?I think the right generalization of the existing syntax here is to have "by <date>" be orthogonal to the existing context to implicitly specify @todo and set a due date. However, I think the existing reminder date mechanism should still work in such a message so you could be reminded at any time you want, independent of the actual due date.
e.g. "Remind me Tuesday to do X by 9pm Saturday"
But yes, I have definitely wanted something like this for similar reasons.
The obvious advantage is that it makes Sandy todos richer by nature, since they include a meaningful due date independent of the current reminder setting, rather than having to view Sandy items as more purely timed reminders, as I usually have to use them currently. As such:
* Viewing a list of upcoming items sorted by date would give a more meaningful ordering (by real due date, not reminder-date-that-happens-to-be-due-date-because-of-how-the-email-system-works)
* Future updates to e.g. snooze an item would leave the item with a still-meaningful primary/due date, rather than an old date (the time of the original reminder) that slips into the past as the item is pushed forward. Currently, this makes my list a little jumbled and disorganized when I go to review it by date.</date>

Inappropriate? This would be good for all sorts of things - eg birthdays. No point being reminded on the day when you need to get a card in the post a few days ahead.
A tag like @by would mean I could tell Sandy to update @birthday @by -
Inappropriate?I like JRK's format of
"Remind me <date /> to do <thing> by <date />"
Excellent!

Inappropriate?gaaa - the formatting got messed up - the <date> should have been <date-time>. Stupid auto formatting</date-time></date>

Inappropriate?Bahahaha, oh my, it just gets worse!
"Remind me [date/time] to do [thing] by [date/time]"

Inappropriate?Howdy folks,
We have something along these lines in the works already.
For some nitty-gritty syntax suggestions by other of Sandy's clients, take a read through http://getsatisfaction.com/iwantsandy...
But before Sandy understands the more naturalistic way(s) of saying this, we'll have a slightly geekier tag-based version (that will continue on for those who like power-moves).
The (s) there is why this is a little more difficult than it would seem and we'll be working with Sandy on whittling that down to something that jives well with most people.

Inappropriate? That other thread is excellent, thanks for pointing it out. Looking forward to trying out whatever you come up with!

Inappropriate?Right now I handle this by using two lines:
Remember X on 9/1
Remind me of "X on 9/1" 8/15
Sandy then creates two entries. A little clunky but it works -
Inappropriate?Oops, they updated to allow:
Remember X on 9/1 @reminder 7 days before
be sure to say "before"
