if sandy wasn't trying so hard to be human...
...it might make iwantsandy a little easier to use and make me more productive.
for example, why am i required to write “remember” or “remind” at the start of every email i send to sandy. it seems redundant, because i’m not writing to her for any other reason than to remember or remind me of something.
for example:
“band rehearsal, saturday 1-3pm”
should be interpreted the same as, “remember band rehearsal, saturday 1-3pm”
my wish:
if sandy is the only recipient, the “remember” or “remind me” should be implied, if it’s not present.
i guess i’m realizing (after using iwantsandy for a few weeks) that there are benefits to a non-conversational type of interpretation... maybe a little more stikkit-y.
thanks.

Inappropriate? The initial words are required so Sandy knows what to pay attention to. It makes the parsing sane. The alternative is that Sandy would have to read and understand everything in an email.
If you dislike typing "remind" or "remember" (they're basically the same thing), you can type "r" instead:
r take baby to appt w/ Dr. Smith next Tuesday at 1pm
(That adds a reminder, a calendar event, and attaches the reminder to Dr. Smith)
I’m pleased with the parsing

this is one of the best points

Inappropriate?Great answer, Austin! I think they've done a wonderful job parsing natural language. It's not an easy problem to solve.

Inappropriate?hey, i love sandy! and the "r" abbreviation will certainly help, i'm just asking for a little more of a short hand with my personal assistant.
it reminds me of the the speech recognition in OS X. in one mode, you were required to speak a keyword so the computer would know when to listen for a command. so you end up saying, "COMPUTER, launch itunes.", "COMPUTER, get new mail." "COMPUTER, compose new email." this made it feel so unnatural, it's rarely used.
sandy's parsing of natural language is amazing, but i'm not convinced it should be the only way we communicate with our computers. -
Inappropriate?Alex,
To fire off requests to Sandy, I use a (dedicated) terminal window in OS X, and a script modeled on Geoff's script here: http://getsatisfaction.com/iwantsandy...
So all I have to type is
% sandy r dinner with Mom Monday 8pm-10pm
or
% sandy r milk @groceries
or
% sandy l Johnson (to look something up)
and I get a near-immediate reply by email. It feels very fast and natural, now that I've been doing it for a couple of weeks... -
Inappropriate? You could make this even sweeter with a systemwide hotkey to bring up that terminal using Visor by the guy that made Quicksilver.
I’m a fan of the visor terminal
