NEW! Google Calendar Gadget
We've just added a little something to Sandy's Sandbox [http://iwantsandy.com/sandbox] for you Google Calendar fans...
Your Daily Digest provides a roundup of what's on for the day, what's to-do, and any other details you'd like to keep top-of-mind. And if you're a Google Calendar fan, you can keep your Daily Digest front-and-center with Sandy's brand new Google Calendar Gadget!
To add Sandy's Google Calendar Gadget to your Google Calendar, visit https://iwantsandy.com/sandbox#google... and click the Google Calendar button in the right-hand sidebar.
And, POOF!, Sandy'll be there!
You'll see a teensy picture of Sandy at the top of each day in Google Calendar. Any time you'd like to consult your Daily Digest, click that picture and it'll appear right there in the middle of your calendar.
This is one of several steps in the direction of Sandy maintaining a conversation with your Google Calendar for you; look for more to come...
Enjoy!

Inappropriate?i'm getting this after I click add on Gcal.

i'm logged into sandy when i click on the widget from your sandbox page. -
Inappropriate?Me too. Logged into gcal and Sandy.
-
Inappropriate?Hi Thalia and JOD,
So this is rather odd. I just tried with a 3rd Google Calendar account after having it work just as it has in our testing with another 2 accounts and ran into what you did.
So instead of clicking the link in the Sandbox, I went to Google Calendar, clicked "Add" and selected "Add by URL" from the menu on the left-hand-side of the gCal page, pasted in http://iwantsandy.com/static/gcal_gad..., and it appeared just as expected.
Does that work for you?
—Rael -
Inappropriate?add public calendar
pasted in the address above
and the sandy icon is right next to the weather
CooL!
I’m glad this works!
-
Inappropriate?I followed as you said above and it worked like a charm. Sandy icon next to the forecast and everything.
Thanks for letting us try this out!
I’m glad this works
-
Inappropriate?Works for me - this is great!
Looking forward to full sync too.
Thanks guys!
I’m thankful
-
Inappropriate?I had the same trouble as above, but your instructions (for directly adding the link) worked. You may want to add that to Sandy's instructions.
--m -
Inappropriate?Hi Michaelw,
I have indeed just done that -- the change should be on our servers shortly.
Rael -
Inappropriate?Howdy,
I believe I just twigged to what the issue is -- and solved it at the same time.
(This is an assertion rather than a known solution, mind you.)
If Sandy's calendar does not appear in Google's list of public calendars then the error is triggered (although it really shouldn't be). When we've been adding this calendar by clicking the button link or manually by pasting in the public URL, we've not been checking the box that says "Allow others to find this public calendar via Google Calendar search?". We'd simply had no reason to.
But it would appear that if you show up by following the button link to add a calendar that a) you've not added before or b) isn't in the public directory, you are "access" to that calendar (despite not actually being restricted in any way, shape, or form).
So in the process of adding the calendar manually, one of you I believe did the right thing -- thank you! -- and made it show up in the Google Calendar directory of public calendars. And so should have now allowed the button link to work for others.
Now unfortunately there's no easy way for me to check this assertion given that I've now added Sandy's gCal gadget to every one of my various accounts -- without creating yet another, that is.
If you had this work the first time (without the "access" error) when you clicked the Google Calendar button, could you please post here to let us know?
(There's a long-standing question in one of the Google Calendar forums about this -- as yet not resolved. Assuming someone else verifies that this now works, I'll be sure to post a follow-up there.)
Thanks a ton for the testing!
Rael -
Inappropriate? So the appointments specifically won't show up?... Great feature, though. Thank you.
-
Inappropriate?Hi B,
I'm not sure what you mean.
Sandy's Daily Digest for that day will show up with appointments, todos, and anything else you've specified that she track in your digest (using tags).
—Rael -
Inappropriate?I think what "B" means is that if you create a reminder that it does not show up in the Goggle Calendar. You have to click on Sandy's picture to see it.
-
Inappropriate?Ah, gotcha! Thanks for clarifying, Non-Sequitur.
Yes, it keeps things separate for those who want it so, but allows you to keep your Daily Digest front-and-center right there in gCal.
As I mentioned, it is step one toward tighter (optional, of course) gCal integration.
Enjoy!
—Rael -
Inappropriate?Hi Thalia,
Thanks for letting me know!
Did you have to go and add it manually or did it just suddenly work when you clicked the Google Calendar button after it didn't before?
Rael -
Inappropriate?I did the manually thing.
-
Inappropriate?I really don't like the way this is implemented. The Sandy icon should only be displayed on dates where there is an item, not on every date. Additionally, I find the icon on each date distracting and not aesthetically pleasing.
-
Inappropriate?Hi Alex,
Sorry to hear you're not crazy about the implementation.
The ideal we're aiming for is to simply push things to and pull from gCal. The gadget really is a step one in that direction.
I very much appreciate the input, though.
Have a great rest of the weekend.
—R -
Inappropriate?I got it to work by just clicking the button on my Sandy homepage, fyi. Looking forward to full integration. Is it days away, weeks away, months away? Should I look for a workaround in the meantime?
BTW, thanks for all the work you guys are putting in. I think you're building a great service here.
Cheers,
m
-
Inappropriate? Thanks all for the clarification. I now understand this as step towards integration... I was hoping to sync between gCal, Outlook, and my TREO. Will hold off on the sync with Sandy and just make use of the daily digest front and center in my Google Calendar until further notice... . Thanks and keep up the good work!
-
Inappropriate?Hi folks,
Thanks so much for the kind words.
While we don't have a time-estimate as of yet, I can say that we'll be pushing the Google Calendar bits out as we get each piece ready-ish for prime-time (living in Sandy's Sandbox, and so available to more adventurous folk, until truly ready).
I'll have more to say (and hopefully show) in the coming week.
--R -
Inappropriate?Don't get me wrong - I think that your effort is fantastic. I realize that there are technical issues that prevent a "real" solution.
-
Inappropriate? No worries at all, Alex. I honestly am always glad for the input.
Rael -
Inappropriate?Great stuff with the Google Calendar gadget working as expected, however there's just one little thing bothering me. When I added Sandy Calendar to my gCal suddenly all day numbers in this little monthly calendar on the left turned bold, suggesting that every day there's something scheduled when infact it's only Sandy :) You have the same?!
I’m tormenting
-
Inappropriate?Hi,
First thing I'd like to say is that having been a Sandy-wanter for just a week or two now, I can say that it's the only todo-style app I've found that actually works for me - I love just being able to fire messages off from Twitter or my phone and have them go into my calendar, and then be reminded about them. No need to visit the website! which is what always led me to lapse using other services...
On the Google calendar integration, I'd like to throw my support behind tighter integration. It's nice being able to see the daily digest, but I really want the reminders to appear in my calendar. Fingers crossed.
Plus, I quote you Rael from ten days ago:
"I'll have more to say (and hopefully show) in the coming week."
Well? ;)
Thanks a lot for creating this service and good luck with Sandy's future!
J.
I’m gushing
-
Inappropriate? Not to rehash everything that's been said, but....ME TOO!!
Google Calendar sync is totally essential, because I love Sandy, but i'm on go all the time and in order to be able to really be able to use her, i'm going to need her to add things directly onto my calendar.
As much as I do love seeing Sandy on every day of my entry, I'm still entering each event twice.
Any idea of timing?
I’m annoyed at Mac and Blackberry. I just want to take Sandy with me dammit!
-
Inappropriate?Howdy, folks!
So we've been finishing up and doing some testing on token-based iCal feeds which would allow you to subscribe to your I want Sandy reminders, appointments, and to-dos from Google Calendar, 30Boxes, et al. And we're about ready to push it live for everyone.
What we could use is a few volunteers to give it a whirl before we release it to all of Sandy's clients -- to work out any potential kinks (of which we're pretty darn sure there aren't any at this point), get feedback on our documentation, and so forth.
If you'd like to give it a whirl, please send email from the email address by which Sandy knows you (i.e. your "primary email address") to help@iwantsandy.com with the Subject: "iCal me, would ya?" and we'll turn the feature on for your account (most likely in the morning).
—Rael
I’m looking forward to making iCal/Gcal users happy
-
Inappropriate?Howdy,
I sent the email to help@iwantsandy.com, but i checked the sandbox and i don't see anything new. My googlecal/sandy app still works the same way...
What's the status on this?
I’m sad. I want this to work!!
-
Inappropriate?Howdy folks,
I'm just fixing some directions and testing again and I'll be turning on the feature for those of you who wrote in to help.
Sorry for the delay!
—R -
Inappropriate?Howdy,
I've turned on this feature for your accounts.
—R -
Inappropriate?Hi,
>> I've turned on this feature for your accounts.
I volunteered but don't see any change in my account. Where can the feeds be seen?
-- alex
-
Inappropriate?Alex, go to the Settings on Sandy's website and scroll to the very bottom on the Account page. That's where I found my private feed :)
I’m happy
-
Inappropriate? Many thanks norbiz, but sadly it hasn't been turned on for me :(
I checked the email I sent 2 days ago, and it appears to have been sent correctly per Rael's instructions. Will try sending another email.
-
Inappropriate?Hey all, I've successfully added sandy's feed to my gcalendar but nothing is happening. I have sent two emails (which appear on my sandy page) but not on my gcal.
Any ideas what's going on? -
Inappropriate?Hi Alex,
Unless I had you confused with another Alex, I turned this on for your account. Take a gander at your Settings page at http://iwantsandy.com/settings -- under the "Calendar subscription" heading.
If you don't see that heading at all, please do send email to help@iwantsandy.com letting me know ( please add "Attn: Rael" to the subject so that I can be sure to have it routed my way ).
—R -
Inappropriate?Howdy,
Google Calendar's robot seems to take a little time to get into a good rhythm with your calendar feed — eventually polling it for new appointments at about the same rate you add new appointments by telling Sandy about them.
Unfortunately the robot's schedule isn't set in stone and it might take a day or so before you're seeing updates percolate from Sandy to Google Calendar in a timely manner.
—Rael -
Inappropriate? It's been a few days and I have not been blessed by a visit from the google gods... :(
I've been sending Sandy notes, and it hasn't been updating my gcal at all.
I’m annoyed that technology is so complicated
-
Inappropriate? It WORKS! I re added it and for some mysterious reason, the first time i added the calendar feed it displayed the actual address, the second time it said "Sandy" and everything has been updated.
I guess now the trick is getting Google Sync to recognize those as events so i can continue to wireless update...
Ugh. Technology.
I’m THRILLED!
-
Inappropriate? This works for me. Excellent - thanks!
Just found how to sync my Work outlook to Gmail via my PDA with GooSync. Would be good to do seamless sync with Sandy in the future but this is excellent!
Thanks Rael and team - keep up the good work.
I’m happy
-
Inappropriate?Update: for any sandy users using the google sync feature just wanted to let you know that your email address has to be all LOWERCASE, it finally works and the google sync app is picking up sandy events.
-
Inappropriate?this is great. i use gsync everyday with my phone. thanks!
-
Inappropriate?Hi Foushy,
The benefit of being behind in my mail for a few hours while I go heads-down is that I come back to this lovely thread of "Aw man!... Oh, cool!... Yay!"
Glad it is working for you!
—Rael
I’m happy for you
-
Inappropriate?Very good to hear, Chris!
-
Inappropriate? When will the iCal feature be available for everyone? In the Help section it still says, that the Google Calendar cannot use the Sandy iCal feed.
-
Inappropriate?for some reason, my Sandy calendar has no events. It used to have my daily digest but now? blank. I just removed and re-installed/added it and it's still making me feel like I am missing something.
help?
I’m mystified.
-
Inappropriate?(for some reason, I keep getting signed in and out, so I can't edit my reply above. I have to add a new one.)
Anyway, for reasons I can't quite make out, I imported the gcal-gadget file and now I do once again have Sandy's perky little face on my calendar and can get my agenda for any day. Obviously, this won't update so it's not all that useful. Any idea why the gadget stopped working for me? And how to get it back?
I’m flummoxed.
-
Inappropriate?Hi folks,
I know Sandy winking into and out of existence on your Google Calendar is wearing a little thin — I'm rather confounded myself.
When this first came up I did a whole lot of experimentation, written up at http://getsatisfaction.com/iwantsandy... .
I just did some further experimentation and Google Calendar has gone all wonky on me this evening — beyond the wonkiness currently under discussion. It's sluggish (and accuses me of being on a slow link, despite the fact that I can get anywhere else pretty snappily) and while I just got Sandy's google_gadget.ics to load for a moment, it disappeared again within seconds. Now whenever I click its check-mark in Google Calendar, I get the "Loading..." box off to the top-right, followed by an "Oops, we couldn't load details for your calendar, please try again in a few minutes."
And now I am getting "Oops, we're sorry, Google Calendar is temporarily unavailable. You can cross your fingers and try again in a few minutes..."
Just before the latest wonkiness a few minutes ago, I tried the same experiment I did last time and used a copy of our gadget at http://iwantsandy.com/static/widget/g... and it worked perfectly.
I'm afraid on this front all I can offer is "Go figure!?"
But I have added that copy to our deployment procedures so that it'll always be available to you at http://iwantsandy.com/static/widget/g... .
Please do give that a whirl and let me know how it worked for you. (Please do give it a few minutes or so though given that Google Calendar still seems to be under the weather.)
—Rael
I’m seeing your flummoxed and raising you a befuddled
-
Inappropriate?Well, the copy of the gadget has gone buh-bye, it seems.
I'm not going to say I'm glad you're seeing the same problem, but it's good to know it's not just me.
Are there different ways to drop things into the calendar? For instance the weather forecast gadget works without fail. But I have the NetFlix release calendar and it seems to suffer Sandy's problem as well.
And I also have been accusations of being on a slow link (as if). Maybe it's time to drop into the Google area of GetSatisfaction ;-) Oh, I see you're ahead of me there. -
Inappropriate?Somebody took the "widget" part out of the URL. I found a copy of the gadget at http://iwantsandy.com/static/gcal_gad...
-
Inappropriate?Yay, Kevin1 gets a gold star. Works like a thing-that-works-really-well.
I’m glad that's over.
-
Inappropriate? You need to update the Sandbox instructions with kevin1's suggestion. I tried it and it worked!
I’m hoping it will now work the way I need it to
-
Inappropriate?Good catch, Kevin1! Great excessive use of hyphenation, Paul ;-)! And done, Tracey! (The change will be up on the site shortly.)
-
Inappropriate?I'm having a problem using ical feeds and thunderbird- essentially whenever I "dismiss" Sandy's reminder in Thunderbird-Lightning it comes back to haunt me every 10-15 minutes... it was horrendous yesterday, it's a bit better today. Basically, even though I've updated Sandy with the reminder status, it still produces an iCal event that pings me (can't dismiss).
I'll attempt this in iCal.app (Apple's application) and let you know if I think it's a Mozilla problem, or if it's in both, it may be on Sandy's side of things.
Cheers!
I’m worried about the next beep to come from Sandy via Thunderbird...
-
Inappropriate?Am I the only one still having issues? When I set it up as a calendar feed, it's not updating. i.e. the events I had when I set up the feed are there, but that's it. If i set it up with the thing from the sandbox, it puts the face on EVERY day and doesn't integrate the information in anyway. It just puts the two seperate bits of information within the same browser window.
Am I just totally missing something??
I’m disappointed, frustrated and confused
-
Inappropriate?Elizabeth,
There are at least 2 different types of feeds, the Calendar Feed and the Daily Digest Feed (i.e. the Google Calendar Gadget). (see http://getsatisfaction.com/iwantsandy...)
The "Daily Digest" feature (the Sandy icon) is available for every day. Some people have complained that the icon appears on every day, even on those days where there is nothing scheduled. However, these people didn't understand that the Google Calendar Gadget has a different purpose and is not a regular calendar feed. Instead it implements the Daily Digest feature.
I know that there is a delay in the Calendar Feed. Google updates the calendar feed about every 3 hours, (or longer). There have been many discussions about Google Calendar not updating feeds promptly and people unsubscribing and resubscribing the get it to update. Look at some of the links on the right or do a search. (Other links: http://getsatisfaction.com/iwantsandy... and http://getsatisfaction.com/iwantsandy... and http://getsatisfaction.com/iwantsandy...) I'm not sure now often the "Daily Digest" feature is updated.
