Personal Tags or Keywords

Can one do personal tags? Or maybe there is an existing function that already does this? I would like to add some kind of keyword or tag to my todos or my appointments so that I can lookup all the ones that are related. For example, as a quilter, I need to enter shows, so I would like to be able to return a list of all the show deadlines that I schedule, or all the entry todos that I have added. In this case I would enter @deadline or @quilt or @quiltshow or something.
