Color versus distance
My friends in Utrecht are all approximately 16.553 km away from me, but their color changes a lot. This makes it hard for me to distinguish them from friends that are much closer, e.g. 14.513 km.
Perhaps you can use circular coordinates, so you can use both angle and (log) distance to map a color. E.g blue (0,1,0) is north, red (1,0,0) is east, green(1,0,0) is west, purple (?) is south and log(distance) sets brightness.
