Linkedin log in page problem
I have a Vista. When I log on to linkedin.com, I cannot.
In firefox, The error message is:
Connection Interrupted
The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading.
The network link was interrupted while negotiating a connection. Please try again.
In IE, the error message is classic IE connection problem page:
Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage
Most likely causes:
You are not connected to the Internet.
The website is encountering problems.
There might be a typing error in the address.
What you can try:

I'm running a MacBook and parallels. I run Firefox/Mac, Safari/Mac, Firefox/PC, IE6/PC and Google Chrome. I get a very similar problem on EVERY browser.
I am able to log in, but I can only click one or two links before I get the same error.
But wait, there's more. I recently upgraded my Mac to OSX 10.5. I bought a new hard drive and did a complete re-install of everything. I also created a brand new XP install too. I still get the same error.
In other words, this cannot be a browser issue, hardware issue or OS issue.
<sigh></sigh>

Sorry. Forgot the KEY part.
If I log in from my wife's netbook, running XP and Firefox, I have NO PROBLEMS at all.
It's running from the same IP address, same (shared) connection with the same version of Firefox that fails on my MacBook/XP.
So how does the problem persist on one machine that has been completely rebuilt and not show up on another machine with identical versions of software? -

Inappropriate?Any solutions yet. You are not alone. I'm in NZ and was blaming bandwidth issues related to overuse of LinkedIn servers. Found that I could use a different computer without drama so it is isolated to my particular laptop access regardless of what browser I use.

LinkedIn told me to delete all my cookies! This had no lasting effect. I may have got once onto the site properly. The other suggestion was to delete the account and start all over again!

Inappropriate?I spent a lot of time on this. At the end of the day there is something funky going on with the combination of my Wi-Fi router and the Wi-Fi hardware in my laptop. For the technically inclined, I believe the signal is flaking out and I'm losing the session. For some reason LinkedIn is particularly sensitive to this.
I was using a Buffalo router, not a D-Link, and it was NOT just the router -- the laptop hardware was a factor too.
I now have a new router and everything works.
If you are having this problem and clearing the cache doesn't help, try switching off the wi-fi and connecting to your router with a regular network cable. If it works fine, it's a router/wi-fi issue and either replace your router or use the cable...

Inappropriate?I have the same problem running a Lenovo T500 with Win XP and an Airlink Model 101 150N wireless router with excellent signal strength (3 feet away from the wireless unit). Even after clearing cache it hangs when trying to log on. Problem goes away with direct connection using a regular network cable.

Inappropriate?Resolved the issue by removing my Linksys wireless router. Anyone having this issue should start with their wireless router. The issue doesn't seem to be specific to a browser, OS, or specific router mfgr.
This is not a resolution however, as we all want/need our wireless connections. I haven't had time to dial into my router for further trouble-shooting, and hope that someone can still get to the root cause. -
Inappropriate?I also have this issue, and a d-link router. However, I discovered a easier work round. Its this:
a) attempt to log in using one browser (e.g., Firefox). You'll get the usual.
b) leaving the first window open, log in using another browser. E.g., Safari. It will log in and work fine. At least it does for me.
It made no difference to me which browser I used first, but it has to be two different browsers. Go figure.

Tried Firefox and that does not work either. My Wi-Fi router is an Airlink 101 but I am connected via cable to the router, not using wireless. -

Inappropriate?I honestly think LinkedIn is simply doing a poor job of quality assurance when it comes to their browser compatibility and cookie/security configurations. I have consistently had a negative experience trying to utilize various reply and login buttons.
My current issues is two-fold. No matter which browser I use, every time I do anything in LinkedIn, reply to a message, click on a profile, etc..., I am asked to login again.
Then, once having logged in, if I hit the send message button, or reply, I get the "There was an unexpected problem that prevented us from completing your request.".
In this day and age, for a site with as much traffic as LinkedIn has, I am baffled that they have not been able to design and deploy a more streamlined security/cookies/login configuration.
Hence why I am still not going to become a paying customer.

Inappropriate?It's not LinkedIn. Trust me, I thought it was too. I bet you are using Wi-Fi. If you read this thread, you'll see that a number of people have solved very similar problems simply by (a) connecting to their router with a cable, or (b) using a different router.
I debugged this over a period of many months. I talked it over with web developers and a number of hardware guys. I could replicate the problem across three OS's (XP & OSX 10.4 and 10.5) and six browsers. When I changed my router, the problem was solved.
I'm not sure why LinkedIn reveals this problem, but it isn't their site that's broken, it's some kind of weird handshake issue between your laptop wi-fi and your wi-fi router. Your browsers are losing "session" due to this funkiness.
I didn't believe it either, but I have had zero issues with any browser at their site since I swapped the router.

Inappropriate?while I agree with you (and have been discussing this with linkedin), the fact that it is only replicating with Linkedin would point to something they are doing within their coding that is responsible. I've also tried various browsers and am convinced it is my router/wi fi. However my router firmware is up to date and this issue only occurs with the linkedin site.

Inappropriate?LinkedIn are clearing doing something aggressive in either tracking or how they maintain session. However, I did experience another phantom issue with Trustfax.com (online fax service). File uploads would consistently fail with an error that the file size was more than 2GB. That issue also disappeared after I switched routers...

I can log in but on the first page after login, i can't go anywhere. everything i clicked ends with the classic IE connection problem error message page: Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage.

then i tried sign up for a new account for my husband, his new account works perfectly, what is going on?????
then i log in with my account again, same old, can't access to any pages after log in. does this mean i have to give up all the connections and profile?

Inappropriate?I've had this problem for over a week now, using Dlink wireless router, so that's definitely a (mostly) common factor, but the real porblem is LinkedIn, as I use hundreds of websites in a tytpical week and don't get this problem with any others.
It's shocking that LinkedIn don't seem to be making any effort to resolve this or provide a workaround - from this thread its been a known problem for 6 months! I've got a huge investment of time in my LinkedIn stuff, so not being able to access it is causing real difficulty.

I am using a D-link router.
This performance issue basically makes the site utterly worthless

Inappropriate?My problem got resolved by being persistent with the LinkedIn help desk, following their instructions to contact my ISP to troubleshoot, sending those results to LinkedIn and then LinkedIn asked me to run some diagnostics and forward to them. About 8 days after this process completed, I was able to access LinkedIn with no problems -- I changed nothing on my router nor on my laptop. My laptop would not work via my router or via ethernet cable linked directly to DSL modem but did work with others' routers at different locations. I think it must have been something LinkedIn changed on their end in reaction to the hop info I sent them. My wireless router is an Airlink 101, my laptop a Lenovo running XP SP2.

Inappropriate?in my case, it would be difficult to imagine it is the router since there are three computers in the house running through the same box. One computer rarely works (mine & XP), one always works (son's & Vista), and one sometimes works (wife/daughter's & XP).
I tried connecting via a neighbor's wireless router and had the same result...can get to the main page but it nevers loads completely and I cannot access any other screens.
There is some handshake that isn't functioning and it is computer specific. My session locks up on "waiting for www.linkedin.com" or "waiting on www.lmodules.com" ??

I tried another laptop at home that had XP but it doesn't work either. It must not be the D-Link or Vista. I have cleared cookies and history and run ipconfig/flushdns. What is next?

Inappropriate?I think this is an issue of a network/router using a particular port for information and that port either being blocked by the isp or there being a conflict. I dealt with linkedin on this and they refused to address this issue saying it's a hardware fault and therefore not their responsibility.

Inappropriate?So the line from LinkedIn would seem to be that although theirs is the only site that is causing people these problems, it is in fact nothing to do with them and people the world over should start replacing their hardware and jumping through myriad hoops with their ISPs. That's just an astonishing position to take, in my opinion.
Maybe there is some handshake/port blocking/session issue between LinkedIn and certain hardware configurations. So what? If every other web site manages to overcome these mysterious obstacles that LinkedIn apparently find so insurmountable then I am rather of the opinion that LinkedIn should be able to as well. It might be a complicated, even an expensive task for them to undertake. You know what? Tough.
If you are a major player in the social networking world (and I think it's fair to say that LinkedIn fits this category) then them's the breaks. And to say that "Even though our site is the only one that doesn't work, we reckon that it's everybody else's computers that are the problem" is just absurd. And not just a little bit absurd; it's like something from a Monty Python sketch.
Web standards are supposed to mean that the days of designing web sites for specific browsers are, thankfully, mostly behind us (yeah, I know, IE6... don't get me started. But I'm talking about real browsers). Are we now going to start designing supposedly mass-audience web sites for specific hardware configurations and if you want to use our site you have to change your hardware?

Every single day I get maybe 1 successful sign-in to LinkedIn and 10 times that number in stalled-out failures. Various locations, various internet connections, various hardware configurations...
I would take this up with LinkedIn themselves, but oh yes, I forgot...
Their contact form gives me an error every time I try to use it.
And there is no other way to report a fault.
Catch-22 is a great book, but it's no basis for a business model.

I've been having the same problem since they upgraded the site last year. I think it coincided with the introduction of the quantserv tracking and/or applications.
Anyway, today just by chance I had another look and noticed that I didn't have a web proxy set in my network settings. I'm using a mac, OS X tiger and safari. So I set the network to use an http proxy. The proxy was that of my ISP and is proxy.tpg.com.au.
After that it worked fine. So, if you check your network settings, probably via the browser, and set it to your ISP's designated proxy that might work. Otherwise, try unsetting it.

I'm on a MacBook Pro on 10.5 and have had this issue with LinkedIn and some other sites. My laptop could not get in, but my wife's 13"MacBook could - leading me to think it was a laptop issue after I played with the router settings and it wasn't fixed.
I just got in and fixed this issue by changing the MTU on my Mac. To do so:
- Go to the Apple Menu
- Choose System Preferences
- Choose Network
- If you're on wireless, choose Airport (otherwise choose Built-in Ethernet) then click the Advanced button on the bottom right.
- Click the Ethernet tab at the top right
- Change Configure from Automatically to Manual
- Change the MTU to 1000
- Click Apply and try getting in to LinkedIn, it should work.

Recently I'd been finding that my LinkedIn login problems are limited to when I am at home. Logging in at the office has seemed to go without a hitch (this didn't always used to be the case, but a couple of weeks back there was a major internet-falling-over event at the office, so maybe something was changed during the process of getting it back up and running).
Anyway, my home setup does use a D-Link broadband modem (it's not a router though; the modem plugs into an Apple Airport Express). So something about the D-Link/handshake issue would seem to be supported by this. And it does seem to be solved by DS's MTU solution. (Disclaimer: I'm typing this after one successful sign-in to LinkedIn plus three or four onward clicks, so it might all fall apart again, but the initial indicators are good).
Of course, my initial stance still stands; it makes no difference if the problem is specific to one brand of router or having your MTU set to automatic. LinkedIn should work irrespective of your brand of router, and we are supposed to be able to have our MTU set to automatic. That's the point of Automatic.
If a site does not display properly in a standards-compliant browser then I consider that site's front end design to be broken (unless it's specifically tailored for an IE6 intranet or something). Same applies here. I don't have to adjust my computer's internal workings or buy a new modem/router to visit any other site, and I shouldn't have to for LinkedIn either. If I have to jump through even one hoop in terms of changing systemic settings on my computer in order to visit a site then that site is badly in need of some under-the-hood spanner time. Any claim to the contrary by the site owner is simply disingenuous nonsense.

A quick search says that the MYU should not be set below 1400 on a PC.
Any MTU settings require editing the registry.

Inappropriate?for the "what it is worth" category..the MTU change didn;t work for my computer (I tried this change very early in the trouble shooting process). BUT, what did work was a firmware upgrade for my router...don;t know why, don't care why it didn't work on my neighbor's network, it's fixed.

Sometime ths past winter, LinkedIn stopped working on my Vista machine - I am directed to the Home page, "Already on LI? Sign In", and it takes me to the "Sign In To LinkedIn" page, which, when I sign in, takes me back to the "Home Page - Already on LI?...". It does't hang, just an endless loop , but only with IE8 - Firefox works fine. And yes, LI's auto response was to reset the System Date & Time. ??????
The Vista machine is hooked up via ethernet cable to a Linksys wireless router. My other laptop is on XP, LI works on both IE8 and Firefox and is connected wireless to the Linksys, no problems whatsoever.
The only thing I do find strange, though, is that even when I'm logged in (on whichever workable system), half the time when I go to do something which involves sending something, LI wants me to log in again, and half the time it doesn't. Is it a security issue, or a glitch with the cookies?

Just noticed this problem since we have been at our cottage. Didn't have the problem before this...
I have changed the MTU on my router and my computer (tried 1500, 1492, 1452, 1430, 1000... all based on different people saying it worked and that was the number that they used)
I have verified the time zone on my computer
I changed the time zone on my router
I have cleared out all of the internet files, history, and cookies... with this, I can only login to LinkedIn, then nothing else. After that, I can't get back to it.
I still need help... any other suggestions? I am wondering how people came up with the numbers for the MTU?? How do I know what would be optimal for my computer/router?

That did not work. i have two computers and could not get in on either computer with either FF or IE, I have no problemn with facebook, twitter and the other social networks. Mine worked on Linkedin until 3 days ago and I made no changes in anything. .

Inappropriate?A day after I deleted cookies, history etc and also checked and repaired disc errors and defraged (which I do weekly) I was able to get onto Linkedin and have every since. So for now my problem is corrected.

Inappropriate?I was experiencing kind of the same problem under XP, using Firefox or IE, on wireless or cable connection.
I've tried a lot of things, but the thing that helped was this:
to change the MTU network setting from 1500 to 1200.
Don't ask me why but it worked directly. An easy way of doing this, is by using a small tool called DrTCP, you can get it here: http://www.dslreports.com/drtcp
Then in the tool, select the network connection(s) you're using, and change or set the MTU to 1200. Restart your network connection (disable/enable) or totally restart your pc and now try to login and load the Linkedin website....

Inappropriate?I cannot login anymore to LINKEDIN via my home PC (ethernet, not wifi) under XP and IE 8 (I think this started when I upgraded to IE 7).
I get the tipical ERROR page from IE. This happens for LINKEDIN and one other website.
I have to use another computer to login and since then almost do not use LINKEDIN anymore.
I am not at all a technical person and most of your suggestions are out of my capabilities.
I have cleared cookies and cache and history, but no change.
Is there anybody - should be a person from LINKEDIN, but ... -who can give simple suggestions of what to do to solve the problem, in a step-by-step way ? Thanks in advance !
