The Point of LinkedIn Groups?

Can someone please explain to me what the actual point of setting up a group is? Are there any tutorials/demos on how to best use a group? I have created the group and now I am at a complete standstill. Looking at this blank canvas wondering what the heck I am supposed to be doing with it? I've seen sort of what the purpose is, but I'm not sure I am really seeing the advantage, does anyone have any feedback they can provide? Do you find it useful? We don't really have a resource for this type of function but I figured I'd look into it and see how time consuming, beneficial, advantageous it was.
