Basic information about point clouds
Hey,
I was looking for some sort of documentation explaining what exactly point clouds are and why some are coloured while others are just white.
I figure that they are the 3D model the system generates ... onto which the images are slapped on. Regarding the colours, I saw that the denser clouds contain the "real" colour of the environment, but some sparse areas have inaccurate colours (blue for leaves on trees in the background) ...
I really enjoy viewing the synth in their Point Cloud form, but is there any other "use" of the point cloud? Am I missing some greater point here? Don't get me wrong; I love photosynth and browse it every day (and am telling everyone I know about it!)
Can you point me to some information about the basics of photosynth (terms, definitions, "how it works" etc). Academic papers will work too!
Thanks.

Inappropriate?Oh! I just found out that point clouds are not something specific to photosynth! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Point_cloud
Wow, can you tell im not from this field? :P
I am still interested in any documentation that might be available regarding the basics of photosynth... (photosynth for dummies)
Thanks.
I’m a conspicuous newbie

Inappropriate? The real matched points are actually little tiles containing texture information, the points would be the average colour and guessed location where lots of tiles match up.
I would guess the positions are rendered as a point cloud because that's the most efficient way to draw them using Direct3D, and they make a neat tool for exploring the image set.
If you want to understand the algorithms used when creating the synth, there's whitepapers on the University of Washington website-
