Can't get Photosynth to run on my computer.

When attempting to view sample synths (and after loading the program as directed), I get a message that says something like "we wish syth would run on your computer, but something is wrong". Don't know where to go from here to get it to work.

    Hi, Stephen,

    Sorry to hear you're having problems getting Photosynth up and running. I can't promise that I've got a perfect solution for you, as several things could be causing this.

    Here are a few things to try:

    1: Visit the website of the company who manufactured your graphics card/video card and download the latest version of the video drivers for that card.

    2: Run fewer programs when trying to view synths. Sometimes, if your computer is limited in RAM (the type of memory that it uses to load programs in to run them), it is neccesary to dedicate all available memory to the program that needs it most... like the Photosynth viewer.

    3: Try lowering the resolution of your monitor. This is really an extension of #2 above. The higher resolutions are much clearer, but also use more of your video card's memory every second regardless of what programs you're running. Trying a lower resolution allows programs to run more smoothly because your computer is not being forced to calculate such high fidelity images every second.

    If none of these work for you, you may want to post some information about your computer here so that Live Labs can tell you if you have a video card or some other part that is known to have problems.

    You can get this information by going to your Start menu, finding and clicking 'Run'. Type dxdiag and click 'OK'.

    This will launch the DirectX Diagnostic Tool which will analyse your computer's hardware and software concerning video and audio applications.

    There should be an option to save the results of this analysis as a text document.

    After saving the text document, open it with a program such as Notepad, highlight the entire report, copy it, and paste it up here as a reply.

    It looks to me as though your computer isn't taking advantage of its video card from what I'm seeing above. Please download and install the file that will let Windows know how to get the most out of your model of video card (this file is called the Graphics Controller Driver) by visiting this page.

    To save yourself some headaches please read the Important Notes section listed on that same page before you install the file.

    I still need the sort of information that Brooke gave me above if I'm going to attempt to sort out what you need. Don't download the video driver that I linked to, above, unless you have the same Sony Vaio laptop that Brooke does.

    Hello, Varun,

    Let's start by downloading the video drivers for your computer from your computer manufacturer's website. Click here to go directly to the graphics drivers section of your computer's driver downloads page.

    I'm not certain what brand of video card your computer has in it as it's not readily apparent to me above, however HP offers drivers for both nVidia and ATi graphics cards. Your computer may have either brand and you should check your manual to find out which one it is and then choose your download accordingly.

    There is also a slight possibility that your video card may be manufactured by Intel, in which case you should use Intel's webpage here to evaluate which Intel graphics driver you may need.

    Try these two pages and let me know whether that helps or not.

    Hello, Mangat,

    I'll help as much as I can. I see you're using a Sony Vaio VGN-FS115Z. According to that link it uses an NVIDIA NVIDIA® GeForceTM Go 6200. I'm having a little bit of trouble finding an official driver on Sony's site or NVIDIA's.

    You should try the automatic NVIDIA hardware scanner, which should look at your computer and tell you what to download and install. I very highly suggest that you do this.

    Give that a try and tell me if that fixes all your problems or only some of them. Also, could you please help me understand what you meant when you said "My 15'4'' LCD showing about just half of it and rest of it is BLACK..."?

    Do you mean that half of Photosynth is half black or that half of your monitor is black no matter which program you have open? Could you attach a picture of your problem please?

    I did the same as u said,but after taking some time it is showing this message:
    "The NVIDIA Smart Scan was unable to evaluate your system hardware. Please use Option 1 to manually find drivers for your NVIDIA products. "

    I know that NVIDIA NVIDIA® GeForceTM Go 6200 is very difficult to find but not impossible.

    Let me try to clear my problem in detail:
    - My LCD showing window screen just in the middle of it(same with browser) and about 1.5 inches from both sides, is Black.
    - when i open a page and grab it down with mouse, it takes a long time.
    - My laptop's Mouse isn't working fine aswell.I have to move the Browser's page with the Cursor,not with the 'Mouse Pad'.

    I am damn sure that i will get solution from you!

    i tried to give u an example of screen by editing in paint,it(example) is showing black screen from one side but my LCD is showing a black screen from BOTH sides,hope you will understand.

    Mangat, I'm sorry that I left you alone. Can you tell me what resolution you're running your desktop at right now? (It appears to be 1044 x 818.) You should try to set it to 1280 pixels wide by 800 high. I think I've found the correct video driver for your computer and it may allow you to set the resolution to the widescreen resolutions that will fill your screen.

    Here are some useful links for you:

    All original drivers for the specific hardware in your machine (includes original video driver)

    Newest driver for your NVIDIA card. Definitely install this even if the first download fixes your problem.

    VAIO Update will list other software that you can download to keep your computer running the best that it is capable of. Any other updates you need should show up in this tool once you install it.

    I hope you don't mind that I linked you to the English versions of these. Let me know if you still have any problems.

    I can maximised my resulation up to ̈1024 by 768 pixels ̈, there is no option for ̈1044 x 818 ̈
    I guess i need the ́NVIDIA Geforce Go 6200 with Turbocache Supporting 128MB ́ driver.

    before updating it to latest nvidia driver, (correct me if i am wrong)

    *When i clicked on run the nvidia driver,it did nothing graphics or resolutions..

    any other option?

    Greetings once again, Mangat,

    Question 1: Can you please confirm, for me, that you did, in fact, install the middle link (the NVIDIA driver) exactly according to the instructions on the driver's download page after downloading it?

    Question 2: Are you telling me that:
    1: after installing it you don't get any more resolution options, or are you telling me that
    2: it is giving you an error message about needing the "NVIDIA Geforce Go 6200 with Turbocache Supporting 128MB" driver when you try to install it?
    If you are following the instructions there shouldn't be any NVIDIA drivers installed that your computer is actively using at all when you install the updated driver.(The one you just downloaded and extracted/decompressed/unpacked/unzipped is okay to be laying around on the hard drive because it hasn't been installed yet.)

    I'm fairly positive now that your black bars are nothing more than your monitor displaying empty pixels because you are running a 4:3 aspect ratio (square...ish) resolution on a screen designed to display 16:10 aspect ratio (wide...ish) resolutions.

    So... the real problem is that you need an NVIDIA driver for your GeForce Go 6200 that:
    1: Gives you the option to set your software's resolution to 1280x800 which is the same as the physical pixels of your LCD. (Any other resolution at all will look worse than 1280x800 on your specific screen.)
    2: Lets you do all the things that a GeForce Go 6200 is designed to allow you to do.

    I know that I've found you the official drivers for your exact model of video card in your exact model of laptop but I have no way of knowing whether you have followed the installation instructions correctly or not (which may be difficult for you because they are in English) other than:
    1: the fact that when you posted your DirectX Diagnostic it told me that you were running without any proper NVIDIA drivers at all and
    2: you tell me that the black bars problem has not gone away and you cannot set your resolution to your LCD's native resolution (something that an official driver made specifically for your video card in your exact laptop would certainly enable).

    So clearly the driver has not correctly been installed. The only remaining question is whether:
    1: you have followed the instructions and they did not work correctly or
    2: you did not follow the instructions exactly.

    I don't know what more to tell you other than somehow that driver needs to be installed. I'll post the instructions from the official download page here in case you somehow missed them before. Here they are:

    Download and Installation Procedures
    1. Download the file NVDVID-00825413-UN.exe and save it to a download directory
    2. Go to the download directory and double-click NVDVID-00825413-UN.exe to extract it
    3. The file will be extracted in the folder C:\Update\NVIDIA-00825413
    4. Delete or rename the folder C:\Drivers\Video2
    5. Close all running programs
    6. Open Control Panel (Click Start -> Control Panel)
    7. Click Add or Remove Programs
    8. Select NVIDIA Drivers and click Change/Remove
    9. Click Yes to remove the selected application
    10. Click Yes to restart the computer
    11. When the computer restarts, the Found New Hardware Wizard is displayed
    12. Select No, not at this time and click Next
    13. Select Install from a list or specific location (Advanced) and click Next
    14. Select Don't search I will choose the driver to install and click Next
    15. Select Display adapters and click Next
    16. Click Have Disk and browse to the folder C:\Update\NVIDIA-00825413
    17. Select NVSZ.INF and click Open
    18. Click OK and then click Next to install NVIDIA GeForce Go 6200
    19. Wait while the Wizard installs the new software
    20. Click Finish when the installation complete screen appears
    21. Restart the computer to complete the installation

    what is "Mass Storage Controller"? I dont knw,how i uninstalled that driver :(
    And what about my Mouse problem?
    "Scroll Feature" of my mouse isn't working.
