Does the client upload lots of extra metadata?
Does the photosynth client add extreme amounts of metadata to photo upload? My images are all on the order of 3-4 megs, but the client is uploading "dzi" files on the order of 8-9 megs. Is this all metadata or resized images or something? If so, I'm a little annoyed. For much of the US, broadband has extremely crippled upload speeds. The 2 gigs of photos I'm uploading should have taken about 14 hours, but it has been running for almost a day now. How much processing happens on your servers versus our client? Normally I'd be cool with sharing the work, but if it results in a larger upload, that is a problem. I'm sure MS has more computer power than I have upload capacity.

Inappropriate? This version is mostly, if not completely, calculated on your system. Most of the time consumed during the creation of a photosynth is from the calculations being performed on your system. I'm pretty sure most of the uploading is held until the end (when it says uploading synth in the progress bar). This will, as you have alluded to, cause you to upload more data in the end.
Regarding your comment about Microsoft having more computing power, that's not quite the case. Due to the massive calculations required to create a synth, it is more reasonable for every individual to calculate their own. At present, the photosynth site is already continually crashing due to overwhelming traffic, I don't think they could handle doing the calculations as well.
I have heard, however, that it is Microsoft's intention to eventually convert Photosynth to an exclusively web-based application.
I hope this answers your questions.

Inappropriate? From looking in my logs, it looks like the client starts uploading immediately. It also appears to be doing nearly all of the calculations client side.
I'm a little peeved. I kept trying to upload a large synth and it kept failing. So, not only did I have to upload my normal photos + metadata (this part only had to happen once), but I also had to rerun the calculations three times before it finally succeeded. When the upload time is on the order of 24 hours and the calculation time takes an hour or two, it is annoying to have to do it multiple times.
This whole Software + Services thing takes the worst parts from each.
I’m disappointed.
