How can I get my 360 panorama to connect?
I took a 360 degree panorama but it didn't connect. Photosynth seems to have all the photos in one group but the ends don't connect even though they show most of the same scene.

Inappropriate?I would love to see support for spherical and fisheye & cylindrical panoramas! It looks like the photosynth camera model does not support these projections at this time. I have taken some of my panoramas and output a series of planer images with a 15-20 percent overlap and these did work in photosynth. Any planer image will still look pretty good up to about 90 degrees, after that the stretching at the edges starts to get bad and is unusable at 120 degrees.

Inappropriate?could not try it yet. the server has been closed all day....because of too many synths. it would be interesting to feed a segmented (rectlinear) stereo panorama. like cubic tiles from 2 perspectives....

Ok, I have tried it and I am not impressed. I have tried it to replicate an object with approx 270 degrees of rotation with 70 images. The grouping and synt turned out erratically with no way to force control order which i know is right. This whole concept of online only..no control and loose all rights does not bode well with me. I am out for now...synthed out that is. -
Inappropriate?I have a series of 7 pictures in a 180 degree panorama, that I think overlap quite nicely, but they fail to link up when synth-ed (31% synthy). Would love to find out if theres a way to fix this, also, would like to delete the failed synths (tried it twice), but I see no way to do this.
I’m frustrated

Found how to delete failed synths, which is to say all of them. I'm with vrdundee, will check it out later when synth is more fully baked. -
Inappropriate?I think I'm having a problem getting my 360 panorama to connect as well. I shot a lot of photos, turning about 15 degrees for each image. It came out 100% synthy, but when I view it online, I can't spin in a circle. The images do all appear to connect, but shouldn't I be able to spin in a circle indefinitely? Instead, it seems to stop at each end of the panorama. Is this how it's supposed to work, or am I doing something wrong?

Try using the Period or Comma to navigate the photos, as it will progress the list by Photo name, not by Synth ordering. -
Inappropriate?Hey I got one to work!
http://photosynth.net/view.aspx?cid=c...
How I did it:
An "outside" pass at a distance - every 5 paces take a picture without zoom. Every 15 paces take 2 additional shots - left and right of center of last shot for a mini-panoramic
Once full 360 pass was complete I moved for an "inside" pass - very close to the subject with the frame filled. Again every 5 and 15 paces taking the same style shots. I added some "obvious" fills - for example to include the Museum signage an extra wide shot or two.
Cant believe I got one to work - 100% synthy 120/120 shots. Full 360.
I’m getting the hang of this
-
Inappropriate?WOW!

Full 360 view working - with the 360 halo bar and everything!
This is amazing stuff
I’m thrilled with my 360 halo synths

Inappropriate? It is possible to get synths to connect 360 degrees but you'll need more overlap than most panorama stitching software needs. 50% is a good rule of thumb. The main reason behind this is that panorama stitching software can assume that the camera is stationary and perform its matching computations accordingly. Photosynth matches images taken from any location so it has to use a more general algorithm.
Idea: I haven't tried this but if you really want your panorama to connect it should be possible to create synthetic images using panorama stitching software and then add those to your existing images. It seems a bit extreme but it just might work.

Inappropriate?I find that it tends to match even when I give it ridiculous only slightly overlapping scenarios and the such. Maybe there has been an update since this thread.

Inappropriate?Good job Capo! I'm still working on it, and thought I would have gotten better, but alas...http://photosynth.net/view.aspx?cid=e...

Inappropriate? It often matches with less than 50% but if you want to go 360 degrees you'll need more overlap.
Here's a way of thinking about it that might help:
Imagine that you have a pile of twenty 4x6 photos in front of you and that you start taping them together by adding them one at a time in a chain. Each two photos will look pretty good but after 19 photos the small alignment errors will add up and there's a pretty good chance the last one won't match up. In a way that's what Photosynth does.
If you know ahead of time that it's a 360 degree panorama you could take one of several approaches to make sure the last two photos align. This is what panorama software does. In our case the problem is that we don't know we're dealing with a panorama until the synth is done. It could be fixed but it would require another pass and more time. If you'd like to see this feature feel free to suggest it in the "ideas" section of this site. -
Inappropriate?IMHO Another way of thinking this PhotoSynth thing is that it is not panorama stitching software. Can't compare apples to oranges. This is new. This is texture mapping with some magic to create a point cloud then display image on the point cloud. And yes if the photos are done correctly you will get a *panorama*.
I think this is where MS needs to clarify that PhotoSynth is new. This is not a rehash of Surround Video from the late 90's. -
Inappropriate?I ran a test and came up with something interesting. My 18-photo 360 panorama has an unwanted discontinuity. For comparison, I uploaded a 3-photo synth which included the two photos that did not merge the first time.
In the smaller version the photos merged perfectly,
CONCLUSION: The actual image-merge algorithm seems to be working OK. However the process which decides which combinations of photos should be compared for merge needs an update.
Take a look.
