How Do I Get Started With Seadragon?
Hi all!
I just had a very basic question (I am not as knowledgeable as a lot of you out there, sorry)
How do I put a huge picture on a web site so I can look at it using the Sea Dragon?
A little background: I made a mosaic picture which is actually composed of about 5000 individual pictures of my family. Its Dimensions: 14142 x 14142 and Size: 81.0 MB. I tried to load it on my web.me.com (apple) web site and I also tried to put it on my Comcast web site that came with my Comcast broadband service. On both sites, the picture would not load because it was too big (they said you can only load pictures up to 8 MB or so).
I was wondering if someone could tell me how to put this on a web site (any web site) – STEP BY STEP? So I could look at it and zoom in on it using the Sea Dragon site.
What do you do to the picture first so it can be loaded?
Do you have to do anything special to it first?
Any tricks to loading it?
Anything special about viewing it?
REALLY BASIC – step by step?
Does the picture HAVE to be on a web site or is there a way to load the picture directly from your computer on to the Sea Dragon?
I would be completely willing to buy a new web site if it could load a huge picture? Does anyone know of one?
If I could get it loaded on a web site AND view it using the Sea Dragon site, is there a way to view it on my iphone? The Sea Dragon app on the iphone is the best, I would love to be able to show people this mosaic and then zoom down on to it. Anyone know how to do this?
I bet there are a few people like me who would like to use the Sea Dragon viewer but just don’t know where to start.
THANKS TO EVERYONE FOR YOUR HELP!!!!

Inappropriate?James,
If you don't want to get your own web space, one easy way to get your picture to be viewable with Seadragon is to upload it to Flickr, a very popular photo sharing site. However, I believe in order to see your original image you'll have to sign up for a Pro account which runs at about $25 but I suggest you try it with a free account first and read the Flickr FAQ (e.g., image file size has to be smaller than 20MB for Pro account): http://www.flickr.com/help/photos/#18
1.) Go to http://www.flickr.com/
2.) Open a Flickr (Pro) account
3.) Upload your mosaic
4.) On the photo page, go to All Sizes > Original
5.) On the bottom of this page, e.g. http://www.flickr.com/photos/gasi/390..., copy the photo's URL from the textfield to your clipboard, e.g. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3463/3...
6.) Go to http://seadragon.com/create
7.) Paste the URL into the big textfield and click Create
8.) Enjoy your picture in Seadragon, e.g. http://seadragon.com/view/cx0
Extra: If you want to view this image on your iPhone, go to Seadragon Mobile, tap on the + in the bottom right corner, tap on Deep Zoom Content, give your image a name and enter http://seadragon.com/content/{ID}.dzi in the URL field, where {ID} is the identifier following immediately after http://seadragon.com/view/, e.g. http://seadragon.com/content/cx0.dzi for my image example.
Once you decide to get your own web space you can convert your picture with Deep Zoom Composer and upload the files to your website.
Let me know if you have further questions – I am happy to help.
Cheers,
Daniel

Inappropriate?Hi, James,
I do like flickr, but I think for what you want to do (host a large file to point Seadragon.com at) they're all wrong. Their free accounts shrink all files uploaded to 1024 pixels in the longest direction (width or height). This is much too small for you. Even if you pay them the $25 for a Pro account, you can only upload a file that is 20MB large and yours is 81MB.
I did a little looking and the best free solution that I've found so far is http://www.fotki.com/. Once you create a free account, create an album and upload your image into it, you'll see a "Get Original Uploaded Photo" link below the image. Copy the address of that link and give it to seadragon.com.
I’m pretty sure this will be better for you.
