Installation error with Photosynth
Okay, so I downloaded the Photosynth Installer, and I started to install it. However, once it gets to "Finalizing Setup" on the download bar, it comes up with an error.
How can I fix this error so that I can use Photosynth? I am using Windows Vista.

Inappropriate?Hi Zolar, can you try installing the Visual Studio 2008 runtime before you run our installer? You can download the installer from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/de... -
Inappropriate?Hmm, let me ask around inside the company and see if I can find some more info. Stay tuned...

Inappropriate?Hi Zolar, I ran this by a colleague at Microsoft more familiar with setup issues like this. He said he's seen problems like this before on systems that have some inconsistencies/corruption in their registries and has had success fixing these systems using the information in this blog post of his.
Could you walk through this and let us know how it goes?

Inappropriate?I get the same error running Win7 - I couldn't really follow the blog... the download didn't have a Win7 version. Any more follow up on this?
Thanks!

Inappropriate?Hi Konan, sorry to hear you've hit this one too. Unfortunately I don't have any additional info other than what's been covered already.
I can tell you that I've successfully installed Photosynth on two different Win7 machines. Did you try the direct Visual Studio 2008 installer that is linked to in my first reply? -
Inappropriate?Yup - I got the exact same error that Zolar did. I even tried the solution someone did here:
http://news.softpedia.com/news/Window...
and it still didn't work... even though they said it was fool proof. Is there a Win7 version of the System Update Readiness tool? (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821). If so, then I can follow the instructions on Aaron Stebner's blog.
Thanks for getting back to me Bert! -
Inappropriate?I couldn't find any info on a Win7 version of the system readiness tool, and unfortunately the Vista version doesn't seem to work on Win7 (at least it didn't on my Win7 machine in the office).
Is the Win7 install fairly clean, or have you installed other apps since the initial install? I wonder if you rolledback to a previous (maybe even original) install point if things might get better. -
Inappropriate?Well, the installation was pretty smooth but some things didn't work after (sound, sleep/hibernate - that one actually still doesn't work).
Would going back to a previous install point mean I have to re-install all my programs again? I would probably not want to do that just for one additional program... even though it looks really cool.
Ya - the vista version didn't work for me either.
If there's no workable solution to this, I guess I'll give up on it. Thanks anyways Bert.

Inappropriate? You may not need to roll all the way back to the initial state, but yes if you went far enough back, re-installing apps would become a requirement.
I'll do some more poking around in the company to see if I can get more info to help you out.
In the meantime, you can check our the Silverlight viewer (you won't be able to contribute until we get your install issue sorted out, but at least you can check out some of the cool stuff others are uploading!)

Inappropriate?Alright, I know that I have not replied for a very long time, but this is REALLY starting to bug me. Several different programs that I attempt to install, including several games (such as FreeOrion), things that could possibly fix a problem like this (.NET Framework 3.5, C++ Redistributable Package 2008, System Update Readiness Tool) can not install either. I believe the same problem lies at the core of all of these problems.
I fit three out of four symptoms on the WebLog, which are 1, 3, and 4. However, with number three, the windows update error is 8000FFFF. Windows Update has not been able to install updates for about six months now, either. Also, somebody suggested that deleting the pending.xml file of Windows Update would fix the problem since Windows Update may not allow programs to access other system processes that it requires to install these "pending" updates (or something along those lines). I tried to locate pending.xml, yet could not find it in any of the suggested places.
This is really getting to me, and I want to be able to run Photosynth and other programs that are affected by this... Please help!
Note: The attached picture is of the palce at which the System Update Readiness Tool for 32-bit based systems stops. It doesn't freeze, it just won't install any further.
I’m sad, angry, and confused!

Inappropriate? For a quick update, after about thirty minutes of running the System Update Readiness Tool, it said that it had finished installation without the progress bar moving whatsoever or it showing any progress in the "Installation status" text. I then restarted my computer and attempted to check for updates, yet it did not work.

Inappropriate?Hi Zolar, here's a couple of things to try:
This thread has a report of a user with a slightly different error code, but hitting a problem in the same area, that successfully got the install working:

This thread has another report from a user with (again) a slightly different error code, but also hitting a problem in the same area, haven't successfully diagnosed the root cause yet, but there some info on log files that can be helpful for us to troubleshoot:
