Issue at publishing stage
I created 2 synth successfully, but now it keeps on stopping at the end, after uploading my pictures at "Publishing synth". Any idea what is causing that?

Photosynth has been under incredible demand since we released late yesterday evening. Getting ready for the launch we did massive amounts of performance testing, built capacity model after capacity model, and yet with all of that, you threw so many uploads at the service we had to throttle them back for a few hours.
At the same time, we tried to tweak a few database settings to allow us to handle more uploads and inadvertently introduced a bug that is causing a small percent of synths to fail with an error code or hang right at the end. We're rolling back that change now and that should fix the majority of those errors.
While that is being fixed, we are adding capacity as fast as we can and letting in more and synthers. Keep trying, but it might be a few hours before we can get everyone in. In the mean time, we hope you will check out our "How to Synth" video (http://blip.tv/file/1190926/), grab a camera, head outside and start taking pictures for the next awesome synth.
No excuses; just the facts on why you are seeing these issues. We really appreciate the enthusiasm and are hard at work ironing out the issues and adding more capacity.

Inappropriate? After you've synthed your photos, and uploaded them to Photosynth.net, we have to do some work in order to get them written to our back-end. This can take anywhere between 5 to 40 minutes (or more), depending on our server load.
If your synth is stuck in "publishing" all day, it could be broken. You may want to try synthing it again, or checking back here at GetSatisfaction, or look at our blog to see what's up. -
Inappropriate?Scott, thanks. Does it mean I need to leave the window open, or can I close it? I have one still open, another I already closed.
-
Inappropriate?I'll leave mine running for a while. It's a shame because I'm desperate to use this service. I'm hoping to get some photos of a wedding soon and see how they fair on Photosynth.
There are so many bugs with this website. I know it's "labs" but average joe will find it hard to get excited about something even as cool as this if he can't even get into it.
I’m frustrated but going to hang on in there
-
Inappropriate? You can close the window, and check back on Photosynth.net later. If you don't see it, you'll have to try your synth again. (We're sorry!!)
Neil, thanks for hanging in there! Our goal is a super smooth synthing experience for everyone, and we're working hard to get there. -
Inappropriate? It would be nice to have some type of status of a project in a user's account screen. I had the "publishing synth" screen for 20 minutes at 8:30am EST, closed it up (as advised here), and the project still hasn't published (12:30pm EST). I'm not complaining at all (I'm sure the NYT article has you folks swarmed over), but I have no idea if there was a problem with my synth, or if it's just waiting in line. A status screen (e.g., "waiting for publishing," "failed to publish," etc.) would be useful.

Inappropriate?Good answers so far. It would be great to get just one more definitive answer on exactly how long a user should wait at the "Publishing synth" stage of the progress bar before concluding that it's stuck and closing the app.
Thus far we have Scott F's advice (appreciated, of course) that the Publishing stage alone can take "40 minutes or more" at times of high load (such as right now). But it would be even more helpful to know just how long to consider too long. A static figure of 90 minutes, maybe? Or relative to the complexity or size of the project -- say, 30 seconds per image or so? (In that case I'd wait three hours before aborting my 360-image project that successfully synthed and just completed uploading, but is still reporting "Publishing synth" on the progress bar).
Thanks in advance! -
Inappropriate?I'm sorry I don't have a specific answer for you on the timeline for how long publishing will take. As you said it's based on load.
You don't have to leave the synther up while it's in the publishing state, though - it's not doing anything other than waiting for a response. You can close it (even shut down your pc) and check the website later to see if it succeeded.

Inappropriate?Ah, ok. I was just realizing that last part just before you posted your reply. Thanks.
One more separate point:
* If a synth is completed all the way BUT never makes it through the final 'publishing' stage, I understand its images, being already uploaded, won't have to be uploaded again if I make a repeat attempt to post the same synth.
HOWEVER -- when the servers are too busy, I make a repeat attempt and the app informs me that the servers cannot handle more uploads at the moment and I should try again later. But If this is true, it should still let me continue since I actually don't have any more images to upload at this time (see previous paragraph). Or alternatively, that message should be changed to say something more accurate -- like, "sorry, we can't handle any more uploads OR final publishing of synths right now".
Understandably you might not want to confuse users by making such messages any more elaborate than necessary. But it's kind of unsatisfying that the current "no go" message does not match with the actual situation. Just a heads-up along the way from beta to release. Although I suppose by release time, server issues will be much more rare.
I’m full of hot air --

Inappropriate? Thanks for the understanding, Sierra. You have some good suggestions for how we handle subsequent uploads.
And you're right we hope to minimize server issues sooner than later. As you can guess it's all we we've been working on since last night. -
Inappropriate?i am waiting for 4 hours .. for Publishing synth ... and not finish.......

I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?FYI, I have a synth that has now been waiting eight hours. Another synth has completed in the meantime. And this one has not shown up yet.
I’m confused
-
Inappropriate?FWIW: found the log files (in Local Settings\Temp\Photosynther) as described elsewhere here. My upload actually completed more than ten hours ago:
20:00:23 VtApp: Collection completed (97% synthy), but isn't avialable for viewing yet.
(Nit: fix the spelling error in the error message :) )
I’m curious
-
Inappropriate?i'm found log :
19:39:33 VtApp: Upload finished
19:39:33 VtApp: Uploading "synth.bin" file C:\DOCUME~1\Ddaz\CONFIG~1\Temp\Photosynther\collection.synth.bin (17234 bytes).
19:39:35 VtApp: Upload finished
19:39:35 VtApp: Uploading "dzc" file C:\DOCUME~1\Ddaz\CONFIG~1\Temp\Photosynther\collection.dzcz (371154 bytes).
19:40:07 VtApp: Upload finished
19:40:08 VtApp: Collection completed (33% synthy), but isn't avialable for viewing yet.
I’m undecided
-
Inappropriate?I looked at my log and it says at the very end:
22:42:01 VtApp: Upload finished
22:42:01 VtApp: Collection completed (73% synthy), but isn't avialable for viewing yet.
That was 7 hours ago. Shouldn't it be done by now?
I’m anxious
-
Inappropriate?Interesting. My first synth finally showed up, about 14 hours after it finished uploading. So, MUCH patience is called for ;)
I’m watching
-
Inappropriate?I just checked, and mine is live after about 15 hours. It might have shown up a bit sooner than that, but I did check it at 13 hours and it wasn't published at that time. I would encourage extreme patience.
I’m infinitely synthier.
-
Inappropriate?Sounds like you all are hard at work!
We're all just very excited and wish you the best of luck in ironing it all out as soon as humanly possible! Don't take our impatience personally, we're all just in instant gratification mode.
I’m thankful
-
Inappropriate?Well I guess the object is to wait. :) This needs a % done or something to say that its still working and not locked up. Since this is a new software, nobody really knows if the program crashed on them or not.
I’m unsure
-
Inappropriate? To answer the question 'what's causing this?' I wonder if it's in part
due to all the abandoned test synths, try-outs and duplicates (not to mention dodgy holiday snaps) that have just got mangled up in the system because of the delay.
I'm also very surprised that there is no file size limit. Odd decision that.
Overall though, there's a question of strategy involved. Why was this alpha quality service been seemingly rushed through at this point in time especially as this could end up a PR disaster?
Shame. Would really, really, love to try and push the boundaries and creativity of this tool, but with the current a 24hr wait (if were lucky that is) it's not exactly something you can just have a play with. And that, kind of defeats the object of what it's all about.
I’m sad to see this failing
-
Inappropriate?Just created a new synth (with 164 photos) and without problems it finished. So it looks like you can just retry and see if your synth finishes as well.
I’m a "synther"
-
Inappropriate?I'm confused. I had the same experience as others -- stuck at the publishing stage for about 6 hours. The prevailing advice seems to be: give up, start over. But do I need to upload all of the photos again? Or do I just start a new synth **as if** I were starting over, and wait for the system to recognize that I'm trying to upload the same set of photos?
-
Don't worry!-- the upload is indeed cached as MrPete below writes. We know it's a pain to recompute the synth, but at least you won't have to wait for a long re-upload. -
Inappropriate?Wade, I did a retry. In the log file, it talked about not needing to re-upload the image files. So I'm guessing the system caches your images and is able to reuse them in multiple synths.
Just a guess.
I’m curious
-
Yes, you're right. -
Inappropriate?I've been waiting for 2 days now for one synth and I created another much simpler one yesterday and its still not posted. wtf?
The log file for both say the same thing (ish)
Collection completed (100% synthy), but isn't avialable for viewing yet.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?I've just started using synth last night. I've had the stall at publishing issue too, on both synths of done. first one showed up on the web after a couple hours. second one hasn't appeared on the website. Been about 11 hours. But if I try again with the same synth name, it says I can't b/c I've already loaded a synth with that name. Guess I'll wait and see if it shows up.
I’m undecided
-
Inappropriate?I posted this same type of question since I didn't see this thread first. This thread has been dormant 20 days so maybe last night's update had some issues.
I wonder if I should try my synths again.
