Linux + Wine + Luck = Photosynth?
Would it be an idea to get Linux supported by using Wine? Or is Photosynth currently really *very* limited, Windows only?

Inappropriate?Wouldn't it be a great idea if Microsoft would support Linux?
-
Inappropriate?Microsoft Research supports Linux since ages :) Check out who employs Simon Peyton Jones of GHC.
I’m allknowing
-
Inappropriate? That's disingenuous. What Microsoft Research products support Linux? None?
-
Inappropriate?Microsoft web-pages makes it difficult to answer to these comments as these are by no means according to standards.... I'm not using any crappy Microsoft software in my computer so it may be that no one can read this but let's hope for best...Anyway Photosynth is by no means an innovation of Microsoft (if anything ever has been...). Microsoft has once again bought a company which has cool things ongoing. This time its Seadragon which in fact has been developing this feature with/for Linux. These Microsoft Ass*oles have managed to make it seem like it's an innovative feature of Microsoft. It's NOT!!!!

I’m sad
-
Inappropriate? So why are you sad :) People are asking here for feedback and your wishes. I think the technology is really cool. And about 2 months ago I was in #blender (without knowing the project) suggesting a plugin that did this manually. I'm happy it can be done automatically :)
And with a bit of luck get cross platform support :)
I’m optimistic
-
you should still get people to write this plugin, photosynth is unlikely to ever work with openstreetmap.org and it is bound to stagnate unless there is direct competition. For example look at the difference between IE5 to 6 (no competition post-Netscape), then compare 6 and 7 (when Firefox claimed the techie market). This is Microsoft's answer to Google Earth -
Interesting you mention it, because OpenStreetMap is a pet project of me. We are in the process of setting up a website that accept geotagged images. But your suggestion would be to make a competing 3D mapped application that does the same thing as photosynth just to get 'compatibility'? -
Not compatibility but diversity, which does make my reply rather off-topic (but I'll continue anyway). This kind of technology and the data it creates could push forward not only mapping, geo-tagging and location recognition, but also object recognition, mesh tessellation, realistic materials for 3D graphics, and millions of future uses that we couldn't even imagine today. If dozens of bright developers can do this in a couple of years, imagine what thousands could do over a few decades. The sky is the limit! -
Inappropriate? The real problem is that Microsoft is really an unethical company which tries to take my money. Morally and ethically it is totally wrong to support Microsoft. I will never again buy an operating system or anything else from this company. I hve used Linux at home for some time and all I can tell is it is so far out superior to any windows that I'm really stunned....
Only losers use Windows nowadays....Especially Vista. You must be a real douchebag to use Vista...
-
You best be trolling! In the "realworld" we use Windows because that's what desktop PCs use. Like it or not Linux has a 1% share of the desktop market, it makes sense to support Macs next. I'm a Mac-hater but a realist! -
I disagree, it makes sense to write something in .net or likes, so it is 'relatively' crossplatform. That said, open sourcing would probably allow many other forks of the technology to happen, but that would be me dreaming ;) -
Wow, it's wrong for a company to want your money? what planet do you live on? -
Inappropriate?I'll mark all above comments as inappropriate because it is really not about Windows here but running an implementation of many research papers :)
I’m politically correct
-
Inappropriate?OK, so we are all sad... Please consider someday something else than Microsoft Operating system. I think this would make us all a lot more happier... I have never been more happy than on the day I discovered Linux and Ubuntu. It's just amazing! Believe me microsoft is just full of crap.... Free world is just so much more exiting!
-
I'm not sure it matters to consumers who bought whom. And, your replies are becomingly increasingly off-topic. -
Inappropriate? What do you think I am running (if I started this topic)...
hint: it has nothing to do with apples or blue screens
I’m amused

Inappropriate? Is it fun in the states to hate Windows? isn't there other things that should bother you in this world?
I have Vista and Ubuntu installed, and Ububtu on vmware,
Ubuntu feels like 5 years ago. it looks like trying to be windows, but way behind. Vista is much better then Ubuntu and Xp, (when you have 3 gigs of memory). -
And I like eggs from battery hens because they are cheap and have no muck on them! Free range is clearly inferior! -
Inappropriate?Who said I'm living in the states;-).. OK I'm not.. I don't hate anything. If you think Vista is cool and you are happy with it, then no problem go with it! I just can't imagine my computing with it, but it's just me....You have your own mind and will. You can do what you like.
I'm used to do my stuff with computer with Ubuntu. So is my 77 years old father. I also have Asus EEE PC with default Xandros Linux. My 5 years old daughter and my 8 year old son uses it without any problems.
The world with Windows seems so distant and like a bad dream to me that I would never want to go back there again... -
:) something funny, replace in your last post:
Ubunto with "Freedom"
windows/Vista with "Commonisem"
and Computer with "Life"
;) -
Inappropriate?well, if you never want to go back to windows, then ignore photosynth, and move on - there's nothing to see here.
I’m pissed off at moany Linux users
-
Inappropriate?Try Bundler, that is open source, and was released a few weeks before Photosynth was released, it is from the original work carried out by the research students
I’m thankful
