PhotoSynth Improvement Suggestions
I'm loving PhotoSynth and have the following suggestions:
- Allow an easy way to embed a Synth in Facebook and MySpace (using Embed code doesn't seem to work even with the myStuff plugin in FB)
- A Plugin for Wordpress and another for Firefox (the web should be browser agnostic so hopefully FF is not intentialy disabled and it is just a matter of time)
- Allow me to set the level of image caching for my computer and bandwidth performance (e.g. cach 2, 3 or 4 photos on each side of current photo) or scan my setup and set it for me.
- Allow me to customize navigation settings per synth (slideshow on/off, slideshow speed, focus thresholds, fade speed, trnsparency thresholds, halo position/size/fade speed, image order, first photo, backgound color, etc.)
- Export a screenshot of a point cloud initially, then in the near future a rotating video or animated .gif and eventually he full 3D model in a generic format
- Synthiness Preview, Stats and Improvement Links ("Delete extraneous 3D group X with N photos")
- Point cloud automatic fly-by (like in the old PhotoSynh demo)
- Add/Delete Photos and Re-synth (probably the most asked feature). Also somehow highlight those potos that fall out of the largest 3D group and make it easy to delete them)
- Allow a full screen option when viewing the Embedded version of a Synth (that button is missing).
- Mke it easier to include both interior and exterior photos in the same synth, even if I have to do some grouping or tagging prior to the synthing.
- Allw me to specify where photos link, possibly by drawing a polygon to highlight an architectural feature in two or more photos.
- Support RSS Feeds in external readers and on photosynth.net show me the synth status feeds from my friends (like with Facebook)
- Add a button to toggle to a more complex interface, with more buttons to navigate the space. The tooltips of these buttons will also help users learn the keyboard shortuts for all features.
- Also allow the viewer to custmize the simpe button view in some sort of Preferences setting (togge button pairs on/ff and perhaps switch to a less stylized and more comact button view).
- Add a button to toggle between the point cloud and a fractal view.
Again, excellent work thus far. I have been following your progress for the last 18 months or so am impressed with the current state and the potential of PhotoSynth. It took me 4 tries to end up with a 100% synth but now it should be a bit easier and with about 20,000 travel photos I expect I can make 4 or 5 other great synths and I will know how to shoot great synth supporting content in the future.
Great work, guys.

Inappropriate? Thanks for the great suggestions Mike.

Inappropriate?NP.
I have created about 10 synths now (user name vagabum.com), but I have had to synth those over and over a total of about 50 times to get the 10 I am mostly happy with; 40 sytn runs were wasted at probably an average of 20-30 minutes each (thankfully the photos are not downloaded a second time). Of the 40 wasted synth attempts about 6 were re-synthed exactly the same and the only change I made was to change the thumbnail.
I had seen the change thumbnail feature requested but after much use have noted that this issue is possibly the most frustration inducing I have experienced and I believe it should be reprioritized to the top of the list. It seems like such a trivial change to provide a link to change the thumbnail after the fact and it would have saved me hours of work so I think the bang for the buck factor is huge. Another improvement to help address it would be to show the thumbnail preview in the status window during the synth process (so at least it could be aborted at that point).
The user selected start photo option also seems like a trivial change and I would think this would also deliver a large value to cost ratio.
Saving the photo collection and allowing the user to delete extranious photos / 3D groups or add photos and re-synth is extremely desirable but I would imagine that is a much more significant set of taskt to pull off. Likewise a Synth Preview is extremely desirable but presumably a huge undertaking so would be understandable if it is a ways off.
I also love the idea proposed on the requests thread of allowing the author to turn off the display of some select photos which are unnecessary in the 3D spatial photo viewing but which still contribute to the more interesting point clouds. Without this I have resorted to creating 2 copies of some of my synths - one with the higher synthiness and one with the more interesting point cloud.
I’m frustrated
