Why won't the layout gadget in Thumbtack work?

Am I missing something? I can get list and grid view, but if I try to use the layout gadget, a message tells me this only works in surface view, and I have no button for that. I am using Thumbtack in Mozilla Firefox on a Mac, if that makes a difference. Sorry if this has been asked and answered before.
