iPod Touch cannot find current location
Replaced my iPod Touch, and the new one cannot fund my current location (at home) like the old one did... it sees my router ( I am using it). Shouldn't any ipod Touch work with Loki?

Inappropriate? If your Wireless Router is not in the skyhook database it will not be able to find you.
You can submit your Network here (http://www.skyhookwireless.com/howitw...)
It should show up in a few days and your iPod should be able to tell your position then :)
I’m confident

Hi Nick
I have added my routers mac address to the SKYhook database several times, but nothing has happened. Are Skyhook making fools of people???? -
Inappropriate?I also added mine before I posted my last reply and it still has not shown up.
Looks like its taking them a long time to add them
-
Do You know if they ignore MAC addresses from user outside the US? I live in Denmark, Europe, and as I wrote added my MAC-adr several times, but SKYhook have NOT added it, and they ignore all emails send to them... -

I have contacted skyhook several times and my problem is still not resolved. As I understand it, it has to do with the updated software that apple sent (2.2?) information is scattred. Skyhook is no help at all so far. -
Inappropriate?Hi Ryan,
I have just mailed my mac-addr to the email address you provided in your post. Hope you or one of your co-workers will try to find out why my MAC-ad has not been added to the skyhookdatabase.

Inappropriate? Is anyone still experiencing this issue?

Ok, well if you end up getting that MAC let me know and ill help you out. -

Inappropriate?I am, but I fear its a setting my my routers. But I don't know. Net stumbler cannot find my "AP" eventhough I am connected wirelessly to the internet now.....My Ipod touch connects fine to the internet wirelessly as well.
Its only the "current" location feature which doesn't work.

Inappropriate?Hi Ryan,
I have been emailing with a member of Your team named Sean.
I found out with help for him that the MAC adr I had to add was neither the router's MAC, WAN MAC, but the WLAN MAC. Sean added it for me, and said that You Guys update your db once a week.
Is it a specific day that you guys update? Then the correct MAC is in your db does the ipod touch automaticly connect to you db? Or do I need to do something more? change a setting or?
/Fred -
We do update it once a week, however i think you missed the cutoff when i finally added your proper MAC address. Worst case is i will be done next weekend.
Let me know if you have any more questions. -
Inappropriate?Sorry I meant Shane,
Like the character in the FX series the shield. Sorry Man :D -
Inappropriate?Hi Shane,
Thats bloody awful does that mean that my Wifi MAC will not be part of SKYHook DB??
/Fred -
It will, it just didn't make it to this weeks update. So next week it will be fine. -
Inappropriate?Having the same problem, i'm in Iowa my touch shows me around philly. Submitted my Wlan mac address. Did a little checking and found out the philly area is where my router came from (ebay). Actually pin points the guys house it came from. Will this create a problem when you try to enter it in your database? Thanks
-
What is the WLAN mac address? Where did you find the WLAN mac address? -
I just saw you emailed our support i will update you through there. -
I submitted my Airport mac address twice over the past couple of months and my iPod Touch still cannot my home location. Do I need to submit a Wlan mac address, and if so where do I find it? -
You can log into most Access Points and they will display it typically under something like the "Wireless" section of the Administrative tool
If you can't find it, you can use software like NetStumbler (http://netstumbler.com) for Windows or iStumbler (http://istumbler.net) for Mac. These tools will show you a list of all of the nearby Wireless Access Points with their SSID, MAC Address and a few other properties. Mark down the MAC Address associated with your Access Point.
If on Vista, you might want to try Vistumbler (http://www.vistumbler.net/).
Also, on the iPhone/iPod, you can install the free application called WiFinder which will allow you to see what networks (and their MAC addresses) are visible from your device. -
Shane. Thank you very much. iStumbler came back with a different address than the Airiport ID I found in the Network preference pane of my Mac. I had submitted 00:1e:52:82:9d:ae but according to iStumbler I should have submitted 00-19-E4-8D-54-61. What is the best way to resubmit this? -
Shane,
I am still waiting for my latest request to be processed. Meanwhile, at home on my iPod Touch, under Settings - General - About, I finally found where a MAC address is listed on the ipod, and it is different yet. It reads Wi-Fi Address 00:1E:52:B1:69:43. Should I submit yet another MAC address? Which is the right one? iStumbler still reads 00-19-E4-8D-54-61 and Network Preferences on my iMac still reads 00:1e:52:82:9d:ae. -
Bud the MAC address in you iPod is for the iPod only. We need the one you obtained with iStumbler. Dont worry about those other MAC addresses. We got what we needed.
Try doing another location request tomorrow and let me know how it goes. -
Shane, it still says "Your location could not be determined". -
when did you enter the MAC address of the wifi access point? if more than 1-2 week ago something might be wrong. wait for at least 2 weeks. But make sure you got the MAC address of the wifi access point, not your own mobile nor your Mac/Apple or PeeCee...
if your on an iphone use "WiFiTrak" to determine the MAC addresses of the wifi stations around you, the more you can enter the better....! And the more precise you are entering the position you were located at the moment the more precise the skyhook database can locate you!
WiFiTrak in action:
http://img.skitch.com/20090209-pnq7m8...
then click one WiFi access point to get the details, including the MAC address:
http://img.skitch.com/20090209-r5wq48...
if your not @ home and can't enter the information right away just make a screenshot of the screen that shows the MAC address, just like i did. on the iphone just press the home & the power button @ the same time.
if your smart you make an additional screenshot of your exact position within the google maps app, or email yourself the location, your choice which one suits you better;-) -
budsimrin: your network preference pane can ONLY show you the MAC address of your airport card.

the only way to get the MAC address needed is by using a stumbler or sniffer, or to use the terminal, but that's for advanced users only.
screesnhot of AirRadar (Mac application) at work:
http://img.skitch.com/20090209-mrrf4g...
the advantage of a stumbler like AirRadar is that one can save all networks to a .txt file which allows for easy copy n' paste retrieval once one is ready to enter all the needed information into the skyhook database.
AirRadar saved .txt file with WiFi stations in neighborhood incl. strength and MAC addresses, but only the MAC address is need and of course the exact location where the stumbler application recorded the data:

Bud i need you to go here to the link below and submit this AP MAC address: 00-19-E4-8D-54-61
http://skyhookwireless.com/howitworks... -
Thanks, everyone, for clarifying the various MAC addresses. Yes, I submitted the correct one (finally) several weeks ago, but following Shane's advice immediately above I just resubmitted. I'll respond in 2 weeks or when I achieve success, whichever comes first. -
Inappropriate?Shane
Thanks for the prompt reply, will give it a week or 2 and see if it finds me. Will post back when it updates and let you know. Once again Thank You.
I’m confident

Inappropriate?you can also try to use loki @ loki.com
loki is part of skyhook, just use it and enter your correct location, this will automatically send your MAC address, as well as the ones in the vicinity... and it's faster than manually submitting via the skyhook page... skyhook takes 2-3 weeks, loki 2-3 days, sometimes faster... -
Loki is a product of skyhook, however it is not faster than manually submitting it. Skyhook's database is the same database as loki. If you are having problems please feel free to post them here. -
Inappropriate?shane: that;s the mac address of the wifi card that's inside your ipod... why would you want to submit that??? you need to submit the mac address of the "wifi access points" your able to receive/see!!! use a wifi stumbler to look for those mac addresses! there's some in the itunes iphone/ipod touch store!!!
you can submit more than one in a given location, since the chance is high there's many neighbors using wifi in their house, or companies in a public space...!!! -
What exactly are you referring to? -
Inappropriate?Shane
Mine updated and shows my correct location , Thanks for your help. -
Great!
Let me know if you need anything else. -
Inappropriate?Hi all,
My setup has been for several weeks now and its great. But maybe Skyhook-wireless should update the tutorial.
Maybe you guys should do a tutorial on howto find the correct MAC-adress? Because I discovered with help from Shane, that there is a difference between the MAC of router and the MAC of the WLAN and the LAN of the same router. If You get myh meaning!
/Fred -
each LAN device has a MAC address... the ethernet card of the computer, each of the ethernet ports of the router and each wifi/WLAN card in the system... the only MAC address that counts is the MAC address of the routers wifi/WLAN card...
to many people it's confusing and they submit the MAC address of the own airport (Apple Mac) card or their PC wifi card, not the wifi card of the router/access point... to add to the confusion there's now many wifi routers/access points that have 2 wifi cards, one for 2.4GHz and one for the 5GHz band, they serve both bands @ the same time... for those BOTH MAC addresses need to be submitted...!
