add a filter for who's online (or recently online)
-need ability to filter for users who are online NOW or at least recently -- getting a huge long list of people who haven't been online in days doesn't make it easy to find people to talke to NOW
- same with Conversations. Indicate when that person was last online or if they are online NOW

We're considering a number of different ways of presenting the "People Nearby" and Conversations lists, some of which would allow you to sort by recent activity.
However, since you can chat with users that don't have the app open right now (with push alerts), it's not entirely critical that users be online right this instant.

Thanks for the reply, but frankly I think you're missing the point. This is social networking. People aren't interested in who WAS nearby or who WAS online -- they want to interact with people NOW. I open the app and see the same list of people every day -- most of whom haven't been on for at least a day or more. It's too much work to scroll through the list to see if there is actually anyone online who wants to talk.
People want immediate interaction. Sure, I can leave a message for someone who will get a push notification, that doesn't mean they can or will immediately respond. I want a conversation, not an email exchange. If people don't get immediate responses they get bored and move on.
Just my thoughts. I think the app is a good start, but there isn't enough vibrancy to it. And focusing on NOW types of ideas will help immensely.
