Prevent stalking?
You should devise a way that when a person is signed up for your service, they receive a text message informing them so they have the immediate option to opt-out of the service.
I work for a wireless cell phone company & a woman informed me that her ex-boyfriend had signed her up for your service and she was only made aware of it when he told her. That is an invasion of her privacy that would never happened if she had been warned by your company when he first signed her up. I can only imagine how many other people have been signed up to your service by their exs and are being stalked. The worst case scenario is that your service will be an accessory to a murder soon. Your service will be used to stalk someone & violence may occur. Please develop a process that allows people to opt-in to your service by choice. The woman I spoke to last night was shocked to learn that he knew where she was without her permission.

Inappropriate?Hi James,
You bring up some great points, and we at Loopt share your concern. Luckily, we actually already do as you suggest in addition to taking other safety measures. Our goal is to ensure Loopt is a safe service for all our users, even the unfortunate unwitting ones. Loopt has always and will continue to go to great lengths to ensure our service is safe and difficult to abuse.
From the very beginning we've looked out for our user's privacy and safety. We've taken many measures to ensure users know they are using the service and sharing their location.
Some examples from our Privacy and Security page:
- Device Verification: In order to sign up for the Loopt service, access to the device being tracked is required. This can take the form of a user visible verification SMS or in some cases a background SMS that the application processes. In any case, it is not possible to register a device without verifying the phone number via SMS and actually holding the phone. This means that a malicious user needs access to the phone they wish to track.
- SMS Reminder Messages: As you suggested, we send not just one, but multiple reminder messages at random intervals to devices capable of background tracking. They let the user know they have Loopt installed and are sharing their location, as well as providing information on how to disable and remove the service if they don't want it. On devices without background tracking (like the iPhone), the user has to open Loopt manually every time they wish to update their location.
- Account Owner Notice: On many carriers, we also send notification by postal mail that the user has signed up for the Loopt service. Letters are sent to the account holder's billing address as registered with the carrier.
- Additional Measures: We take further measures that we prefer to keep quiet. We don't disclose these so that they're harder to circumvent and to maximize their effectiveness.
In short, we do everything we can to keep our users safe, even in unwitting use scenarios. If you can think of anything else we should be doing, please let us know. We'd love to hear from you.
