Inappropriate? On the iPhone, Loopt can only update your phone's location if it is open and running on the screen.

Chris, what kind of updates/improvements to Loopt might we expect with the release of iPhone OS 3.0 and, in particular iPhone 3G S (i.e., the compass feature)? My wife and I use Loopt all the time, but one of the things we would like is if the map interface operated more like the Maps application both as to appearance and so as to allow your friends' locations to update in real time without having to ping them for an update when they are moving. Also what about improvements now that "push" will be available? Thanks and keep up the great work... -
Hi Brent,
Thanks for the comment! I can't give you definitive answers at this point, but at this time, Apple still hasn't announced any plans to allow applications like Loopt to run when they aren't up on the screen, even in OS 3.0. That means we probably still won't be able to update your location unless you tap on the Loopt icon to bring it up on the screen, even with OS 3.0 and 3Gs. We hope to move notifications for pings, pongs, friend invitations, and journal comments to Push Notification to limit the use of SMS messaging. We also hope to integrate some of the new 3Gs features like the compass and additional maps functionality into a future version of Loopt. Hope that provides at least a little insight :)
