how can i get a text notification of a friend's journal update?
Without a friend using the 'ping' function, I would like to receive their journal/location updates via SMS. Is this possible through Loopt? If so, can I subribe to only certain friends?

Right now, we don't have the ability to alert you when friends update their journal; this is something we're working on.
However, you can set a friend alert online here https://app.loopt.com/loopt/sess/memb.... As a result, you'll get an SMS when s/he's within a specified distance.
