How many SMS messages does Loopt actually burn?
hi there,
So go here's my burning question. How many SMS messages will Loopt send in a given day, and under what circumstances? Some people are saying that everything is driven by SMS, others that only invites are SMS; which is more accurate? Please provide real number examples here for all our benefit. The install page mentioned that I could throttle the number of messages sent, but I can only change the type of messages sent, not quantity. Since I'm on a limited text plan, the ability to throttle quantity is critical for my continued use of Loopt.

Inappropriate?I've heard people say that "everything" is SMS-driven, but I've been using loopt for about a day with my phone in airplane mode and the wifi turned on (i.e. with no possibility of sending or receiving an SMS message), and it appears to be fully functional. I suppose that nobody could "ping" me, but I was able to invite someone else and ping someone else, which would seem to indicate that the SMS messages are being initiated by me but sent by the Loopt servers. I was even able to respond to an invitation, though because I had SMS turned off I wasn't aware of the invitation until I launched the loopt program and saw it in my list.

Inappropriate?Hi from Loopt,
There are a few SMS messages you will have to endure to use Loopt. The most important is a verification text message that Loopt sends during registration that isn't optional. After that, we've built a feature into our iPhone application that allows you to turn off SMS alerts for Friend Invitations, New Journal Comments, and Pings and Pongs. You can view and change these settings from within Loopt by tapping on the Settings icon in the lower right. You will still receive text messages that friends send directly to you, and there may be some messaging categories I'm not thinking of at the moment, but turning the aforementioned settings to off should stop most of the text messages relayed/initiated by Loopt.
We'd love to be able to avoid text messages altogether and save everyone some money. We're working on solutions, but in the meantime, we hope the settings we've built into the iPhone application help mitigate the messaging costs for those who don't want the SMS alerts.

Inappropriate? How do updates work to your friends, are these SMS driven? Whenever I open the Loopt App on my iPhone, is a text message sent out? It would be really nice to have some visibility of how many texts are sent out, like a counter under the Settings area...
I’m concerned

Inappropriate?Location updates aren't SMS driven. The only time you would likely send an SMS from Loopt is if you choose "Text" from a friend's profile/journal in Loopt. Other features like Pings and making Journal comments are driven by Loopt on your behalf. So for example, when you Ping someone, you don't use a text message. Loopt sends the request on your behalf from our servers.
Receiving text alerts is much more common, and text alerts do use your SMS messages when you receive them. Examples include receiving alerts that someone commented on your Journal, someone pinged you, someone responded to your ping (called a pong), or someone wants to be your Loopt friend. These can all be turned off in the Settings menu of Loopt on the iPhone.
Aside from those that I just mentioned, Loopt may send periodic privacy/security reminders and verification messages (like for registration or password resets) to provide our service. These aren't optional, but we try to keep them to a minimum.
Hope this helps!
