Hi Everyone,
This post was created a while ago, so I should provide an update. We're working to support the iPod Touch. I don't have a specific timeline to share, but we're working on it and hope to have it out soon. I'll post an update as soon as I know more, so follow this topic (there's an option to do so near the top of the page), and I'll make sure to post updates here. We recognize that there are a lot of iPod Touch users out there who would love to use Loopt, so thanks for your patience!
Chris

Inappropriate?Unfortunately at this time we don't currently plan to support the iPod touch.
-
Inappropriate?what if you have a cell phone but it is not supported by loopt? is there a way to trach the phone signal but access the info via web on an itouch or computer?
-
Inappropriate?Rody,
You must have a Loopt-supported phone to use Loopt. There's currently no way for you to have a Loopt account without one, even via the web. Sorry! -
Inappropriate?doesnt support now... will there be efforts to base loopt onto the itouch later? or is it just across the board?
I’m sad
-
Inappropriate? There's no way for us to support the iPod touch since we can't get location for that device. It doesn't have GPS or a cellular radio to triangulate location. Unless Apple one day adds GPS to the iPod Touch, Loopt will be unable to support it.
Chris -
Inappropriate?chris: the ipod touch can actually locate itself using information based on surrounding wireless networks. apple partnered with a company called skyhook to develop this.
from USAToday: "Skyhook Wireless was formed in 2003 and uses a database of Wi-Fi hotspots to determine your geographic location."
-
Inappropriate? You're correct, we can use skyhook data as an alternative, but because that would mean you can only get location when connected to WiFi, the Loopt user experience would not be very good, especially when someone is mobile. Sorry to have simplified things a bit too much and left out the WiFi location possibility for the Touch
-
I don't understand how you can say that the Loopt experience "wouldn't be very good" for people using the iPod Touch. Shouldn't that be for your customer base to decide? I have an iPod Touch and would be happy use Loopt at home, at internet cafes, airports, university campuses, convention centers, restaurants and other wifi spots. Loopt should investigate the customer perspective and make marketing decisions that will gain more customers. Brightkite is usable on my iPod Touch- why lose market share to Brightkite? -
I am sorry but I do not buy the "Loopt user experience would not be very good" story, thats a sack of horse crap. Skyhook seems to be pretty accurate. I do not see why it is not supported on the Touch. What is the harm? Of course it is not going to work if your not in a Wi-Fi hotspot. I think the people who own a Touch know this already. Why close out potential users? -
Inappropriate?Nooo problem?it was a smart move for you guys, im sure you'll have the market in a stranglehold with this one..... since there is such demand from this ages parents to keep watch over there children.
Is that the market your going for? parents + childrens... im sure this will be a definite hit with teens and mid twenties?
I’m confident in this product

Inappropriate?Loopt actually isn't designed as a tracking tool for families or businesses and has security features built in to prevent such uses. We don't target the family finding market.
-
Inappropriate? It's amusing to me that the official word from Loopt is that it does not support the iPod Touch, and that there's no way to register an account without a supported phone, as I've been using Loopt on my iPod Touch, installed via the app store on the iPod Touch, for a couple of months now with no problems. It works just fine using the location based services on the iPod Touch (which use the skyhook databases).
I have noticed recently that iTunes tells me that it can't install Loopt on my iPod since it is not supported on the device, but since the app is already present and functioning on my iPod, this message always strikes me as funny. I suspect Loopt recently set the app to refuse to install to the Touch. This is an unfortunate decision on their part, since the app works just fine and there are plenty of wifi access points scattered all over the big cities and the iPhone/iPod OS's location based services always seem to be able to find me with good-enough accuracy.
I’m stupefied
-
Inappropriate?Given that Facebook has announced they'll be adding their own 'location based services', I can't comprehend why Loopt or Whrrl or any other company that is soon to be facing competition from that behemoth would want to artificially limit their user base by restricting their app from installing on any device capable of running it. For what it's worth, Facebook's current app runs on the iPod Touch, I doubt they'll restrict iPod Touch users from using their location-based services.
To the app, the iPod and iPhone are the same, the API takes care of pulling the location info from the GPS chip if available or wifi if available. Restricting a location-based app from running on the Touch is an unfortunate decision. -
Inappropriate?I'm glad you wrote to state that you are running this app on the iPod Touch. I guess when iPod Touch users get sick of waiting for Loopt we'll just move on to the to companies willing to service this segment of the market. Loopt's loss.
I’m puzzled
-
Inappropriate?Companies willing, you mean like Brightkite. I am frustrated with Loopt and I am not even a customer of their product (yet) their decision is baffling and it would be nice to hear a response from an employee.
Does Loopt have some kind of contract with the Devil (you know, Verizon Wireless)?
I’m puzzled
-
Inappropriate?I'm not sure it's worth getting too frustrated, it's possible that there's some extra coding or testing overhead associated with supporting the iPod Touch, and that it's too much for Loopt to deal with that or with possible customer service headaches when iPod Touch users contact them asking why the app can't locate them with strict accuracy or can't locate them at all when they're off wifi (honestly, all it'd take is one line in the FAQ).
But let's say the folk at Loopt just hate the iTouch. Rather than keep iPod Touch users from even installing and running the app, Loopt could instead adopt a policy of benign apathy towards iTouch users and let us install and run the app without their official support. --it does appear to run just fine, and given that the iPhone and iTouch run the same OS and that the location based services work on both without requiring additional code to make it work on both devices, I just don't see a compelling engineering reason to restrict the app from running on the iTouch.
If the issue is related to the lack of SMS support on the iTouch, that's something that will become less of an issue when Apple launches their push notification service. Surely using the net for such messaging purposes will make more sense than SMS, particularly when AT&T has dropped unlimited SMS messaging from the iPhone plans. -
Inappropriate?does loopt use the Internet?? Or the cell phone service... Cause I have an iPhone without a data plan and was wondering could I possibly be charged for this?? Thx
-
Loopt uses both the internet and the cell phone network, so you need a data plan to use Loopt on an iPhone. -
Inappropriate?Well, you can use Facebook's status to update Loopt.
-
Inappropriate?I have an unlocked/jailbroken 1st gen iPod Touch.
I was able to install loop. I encourage you all to do the same.
I was able to update using my wifi connection, and when it asked me for a phone number I gave it my current cell phone's #.
It texted me a link to click and I just typed the URL in on my computer and it activated my Loopt account for me.
There are ways around everything
I’m it's possible
-
Inappropriate?Well, while I'm glad you are happy to be using Loopt, for me their service isn't worth voiding the warranty on an expensive piece of hardware. There are other apps whose creators want the iPod Touch market. Since Loopt doesn't, I use their competitor.
-
if you follow these steps
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808
you don't void the warranty. I've replaced an iPod Touch through Apple that was jailbroken no problem. These steps restore your iPod to factory settings no matter how you have modded the OS. -

Inappropriate?I'm glad to hear of this! Lots of would-be Loopt fans have flocked to Brightkite. Perhaps they'll use Loopt when it supports the iPod Touch.

Thanks, Allison! That's why we're working hard on it and hope to have it out soon! :)
