Suggests for Elysium
Hello,
First, sorry for my english (my first foreign language is the french).
Elysium is really a very good app! I sended today an information to the ECVST mailing list (an official french speaking Cubase user's group) and to MAC MUSIC (a huge web with information about music).
http://www.espace-cubase.org/
and
http://www.macmusic.org/software/?lan...
I think shortly an information will be published here.
You have to place the information about Elysium to:
http://fr.audiofanzine.com/
and here
http://createdigitalmusic.com/tag/mac/
Well, I have some suggestions:
COPY LAYOUTS or GROUPS OF EVENTS
It could be cool, if we can copy/past the complet layer. For exemple, we create a layer, copy them, and make some changes and adjustements in the second layer. In the same logic, it could be well to select several events and copy them to another layer...
MAKE AND ORGANISE SHOTS
when we program the layer, it could be nice to save it like a "shot" and make another organisation of the layer. I noticed, that in some tutorial, you changed some parameters in the real time. The problem is that you can change a limited number of parameters. With the organisation of SHOTS, you can create several layouts with subtles (or huges) changes, and later, in the real time, or with some sequence of these shots), you can make evolve all these modifications...
Then, during the playing, we can select these shots and modify in one instant the evolution of programmed arpeggios... (this was made at M - a famous software for generative music on OS7 - OS9). This authorize a cool evolutions of patterns in real time.
SPEED VARIATION:
Now, the music made by Elusium is a little bit mecanical. Each step are the same. It could be very useful, if we could change the speed of the impulse, between different MIDI events. For exemple, the signal goes from the starting event (Generator) to the second at 120 bpm, but from the 2nd to the third, he goes at 300 bpm... and so one.
JUMP:
now, the signal goes lineary to the 6 directions. But for exemple, like in chess, we can jump with the horse not lineary. It could be interessting to can go to the more other directions.
For exemple: from the C4 to C#4 - D4 - D#4... or: C4 - A3 - B2 - F#1... this is only for other linear directions (like in aviators, we could go to all 12 direction). And why not take another paths (like the horse: C4 - F4 - A#5.... or jump directly to F2, then E5? It will be nearest to the keyboard's arpeggios, no?
REBOUNDS:
it could be super to manage more of menus by keyboard (of the computer). Then the movements of the Rebound could be managed by the shortcuts in the numerical part of the keyboard... from 5 we could go to the "12 o'clock" by the 8, to the right by the 6 key and so one....
BRAKE A NOTE.
When the impuls arrive to an event (to play a note, redirect or divide the signal) could be possible to introduce a break to send the impuls later.
INSPECTOR:
Could you make these dialogs adjustable? When we work on the very large screen, i can use a very long windows... if not, we can reduce them...
AFTER RESTART:
When we select and make some organisation (layout with notes and/or octaves), we lost all of theses statements after the restart. It could be nice, if we could retrieve the same organisation of the workspace, than in the last session.
For today, it is enought... I hope these ideas are realisable...???

There's several features in here, some tickets already filed are:
Essentially the idea being to open collections of cells (and collections of layers) to independent manipulation. -

Yep it's definitely an aim to allow you to create snapshots of individual controls (e.g. how an LFO is setup) as well as panels like layers & the player. Some tickets filed on this are:
- #2 Control presets.
- #3 Configuration snapshots.
- #4 Cues.
- #43 Group sends.
The idea being that you can create presets at different levels, group them, and uses cues to trigger preset changes. -

Each layer has a fixed tempo at any specific time. You can get variations by running different layers at different tempos and by manually or, via LFO, altering the tempo of one or all layers.
One ticket on file considers the ideas of playheads having "velocity" that could be changed:
The next release of Elysium will also have a new "skip" token that will let you jump playheads over intervening cells which will give you more variability (for example by attaching an LFO to the cell skip parameter). -

Again ticket #17 Playheads should support velocity and spin goes someway towards thinking about nonlinear movement. -
OK, but this suggest suppose that we can go to the linear directions, but with no common border nearby: at the clock: the direction to 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 - 7 - 8 - 9 - 10 - 11: actually we have only the 6 and 12'clock direction, then 1:30 - 4:30 - 7:30 - 10:30...
I just send you an email with a screen shot with coloured arrows -

Using the numeric keypad to set directions is an interesting idea. I've filed that as a new ticket:
Something I immediately started to wonder about was how to handle the situation where you have multiple directional tokens on the same cell. You need to be able to switch from controlling the direction of say a generator to a rebound on the same cell.
A possible approach is modifier keys (e.g. you learn that unmodified the keypad switches direction on a generator while with the option key down it controls a rebound). I'm not sure whether I like that but it's feasible. -
Be aware here: If you open the possibility to go to more thant 6 hexagonal direction, this will be a problem: the keypad authorize 8 direction, and now this is 6 that we need, and maybe 12...? In this cas, the keypad is obsolete for this situation. And use letter's key... I experienced the change in the SPIN: each mouse click means one step to the clockwise direction. This can be sufficient... -

BRAKE A NOTE.
When the impuls arrive to an event (to play a note, redirect or divide the signal) could be possible to introduce a break to send the impuls later.
I'm not entirely clear what you mean here. There is already the gate feature that allows you to delay notes and the ghost that allows you to play more beats.
I'm also considering more radical things like:
- #8 Built in arpeggiator.
- #9 Split notes.
Feel free to expand further on what you're trying to do. -
Oh, my english!!! (You must know, i never learned.. only from the gear's manuals (writed by the japanese Korg's, Yamaha's and Kaway's crazy employees), and by the internet.
Well i will try to make a better explanation:
I saw we can vary the speed, but manually only (1 - Player, and/or 2 - Layer), in this case the variation is for the entire layer: another problem, we have only one mouse and one hand. If other changes are necessary at the same time, we have no chance.
When the red signal goes from cell to cell, the time of each step is identical for each step in the layer (to illustrate this, I will send you an exemple by email). OK, you can create two layers with different speed, but his speed will always be identical for all paths in that layout.
I created an exemple in Elysium: Generator is placed in the midlle of the board. Generator and Split functions generate signals to 5 direction, only two will be considered for our explanation: the first, which goes to the "10'clock" direction, and the other that goes to the 2'clock. There are 8 cells in each direction, in each cell I've introduced a note. The final result is that the arpeggiator plays only 8 notes, because the left and right signal change the cells in the same speed.
We can call these cells (instead of the classical musical notations B4, D3...) from de start cell "C0" like this: C-1; C-2, C-3....to C-8 (for the left branch) and C+1, C+2, C+3,.... to C+8 (for the right branch.
Now, both the right and the left signals (C-1 and C+1, C-2 and C+2... and all other) are played together...
Now, if I want that the signal makes 4 steps when it play 4th first notes together, but would play the other 4th cells alternatively: at first the right (C+4) and then left cell (C-4). (I think this is named a syncopated effect).
For this effect we could dispose of the function to delay the signal for a half (1/4; 1/8...) the time... in some concret node, no? Or do You have another solution?
In my exemple, you will see, the both signals come by the same speed by all 8 cells... how to do a syncope in entire path, and how to do it from another point...??
See this representation: Now:
Left branch:
X ° ° ° X ° ° ° X ° ° ° X ° ° ° X ° ° ° X ° ° ° X ° ° ° X
Right branch:
X ° ° ° X ° ° ° X ° ° ° X ° ° ° X ° ° ° X ° ° ° X ° ° ° X
With the delay at the 4th cell:
Left branch:
X ° ° ° X ° ° ° X ° ° ° X ° ° ° X ° ° ° X ° ° ° X ° ° ° X
Right branch:
X ° ° ° X ° ° ° X ° ° ° X ° °(° °)° X ° ° ° X ° ° ° X ° X
With the speed change:
Left branch:
X ° X ° X ° X ° X ° ° ° X ° ° ° X ° ° ° X ° X ° X ° X °
Right branch:
X ° ° ° X ° ° ° X ° ° ° X ° X ° X ° X ° X° ° ° X ° ° ° X
=================
Or another variation: the first 4 left notes can be play in the same time, like in the right "branch" only two, then the speed change, and the 2 left notes are played while in the right there are 4 notes... I imagine, that this can be made by the variation like in step's sequencers or arpeggiators: 1/4 - 1/8 - 1/16 - 1/32 time (this is a relative speed of the signal inside the layer while the general speed of the layer is fixed in bpm).
Maybe You can introduce a new variable - the relative speed variation - from a given cell to the next node.
Another command possible - the delay of the signal: in my exempe with 8 cells to the left and 8 to the right.
The left signal is played BEFORE the coresponding cell from the right, but after 4 steps, this ordre is reversed: the left note is delayed at the 4th node, and then the cells from the right branch are played BEFORE the cells from the left branch.
Now is this possible? If yes, how?
You will find attached to my email the layer with my 2 branches and I hope You understand better that i wand to say...
Thank

INSPECTOR:
Could you make these dialogs adjustable? When we work on the very large screen, i can use a very long windows... if not, we can reduce them...
The inspector has been completely redesigned for the forthcoming release. Once you've tried that I'll await more feedback :) -
Yes I saw an idea at your Skitch page. This is a minor modification for a visual comfort... -
The redesigned inspector always shows the current pane in its entirety so no adjustment is necessary.
The disadvantage is that you can only see one pane at a time. In practice I haven't found that to be a disadvantage, just different.
However the architecture of the redesigned inspector means that, in some future version, it may be possible to "tear off" inspector panes to keep important configuration options close at hand.
I'll be interested to hear your feedback once you've had a chance to use it. -

AFTER RESTART:
When we select and make some organisation (layout with notes and/or octaves), we lost all of theses statements after the restart. It could be nice, if we could retrieve the same organisation of the workspace, than in the last session.
Do you mean the layout of the windows? Or whether the display of octaves or keys is on/off?
I'm not really sure what you're after. -
Well, i try anew.. (this is my poor english).
When we start, each layour is in blue color. Then we can select from the menu the colors (show octaves) or note (show notes). We make some layout and organise our arpeggios, and save our work. But when we restart this layout, it is anew blue and without notes. I would lake to retrieve the layout in the same state like in the end of the last session.
I hope, my explanation is better???

So you want the layer to remember whether you have "Show Notes", "Show Octaves", or "Show Key" enabled? -
Yes, exactly. In Firefox, you can select at the Preferences, which screen you want see at start up: one option is - show the last visited page. This is the same: at Elysiym now i have to redo these changes to my prefered form. Maybe it could be selected this in the Preferences...? -
Inappropriate?Hopefully I've given you some useful feedback about your ideas. They're all good and you've prompted me to think about some things again.
Feel free to comment on each one to expand on your point of view.
The ticket references are to my Lighthouse issue tracker which is where I plan the features for each release milestone.
I’m happy
