Less expensive.. may sell more..
Hey gang. I wanted to suggest significantly lowering the prices on the 'Learning...' series videos and the DIWD videos. I work for a school district and if I go to my boss and tell him I'd love to get these great videos to help my Drupal skills.. and, oh yeah, they cost $75 each.. he's gonna laugh in my face. I'd bet if you cut the price in half you would sell more than twice as many. Seems there are far too many good and free Drupal video tutorials out there to justify the $75. I certainly understand you have put a ton of work into the videos.. just feel you are losing a lot of sales because of the price. Just a thought! Thanks for all you guys do!

Inappropriate?Hi Brian,
We did a lot of thinking about our price points. We put a lot of time and effort into the videos. And while there's certainly a lot to learn from the free offerings out there (we do many of them ourselves), I hope you'll find that the overall quality of The Lullabot Learning Series to be in a different category.
We see them as a workshop-on-disc. We spend a lot of time planning them out, packing in as much content as possible, recording them professionally, and editing them carefully to make the information as clear and useful as possible. Each video has about 4 or 5 people involved in its production and represents about the same amount of content as a two-day Lullabot workshop.
We're not a large company with major distribution channels so we need to do what we can to keep the series sustainable while keeping the quality high. That being said, we always do what we can to try to help out. We're working a new (Drupal-based) store which will allow us to offer better bundle discounts, coupons, and sales -- be sure to get on our mailing list to be notified about these things. We also have educational discounts for people just like yourself. Think you might be interested in that? Contact us here and we'll set you up.
We understand that the DVDs might initially seem like a little much for some people to swing, but we think they're worth it. For those that don't have this money to spend, we continue to publish lots of free audio and video podcasts and articles on lullabot.com. We hope that we can help lots of new Drupalers through these outlets while we keep the DVDs as top-grade as possible.

this is one of the best points

Thanks a lot for the reply Jeff. I will contact you guys about the educational discount.. and see what the boss thinks! I can appreciate that you guys are a smaller company and in an open source market where a lot is expected to be free or low cost. Which is kind of tough. I have enjoyed and learned a lot from all of your other material.. hopefully I can sweet talk the boss into a purchase. Thanks.

Inappropriate? While I'm sure this video is great - and the 960robots theme is awesome - several books & eBooks on Drupal theming are available for less than $75. The $40-50 price point is reasonable for a nugget of knowledge.
To play devil's advocate, one could argue that paying $30 more for a video is justified when you consider the extra hours you'd spend reading a book. Time is money...
Did I mention that 960robots is awesome? -
Inappropriate? The new Lullabot Store is up now! We rebuilt the site using Drupal and Übercart. This allows us to offer bundles, coupons, and lots of features over our old store.
Be sure to get on our mailing list, so you can be sure to know about coupons, new bundles, and other special deals. -
Inappropriate?I have to heartily agree here, I think $75 is just unreasonable. As long as the price is that high I will never buy any more of the series. If the price were in the $30-$40 range, however, I would have already bought every single one. I understand that making these videos costs time and money, but a lower price would sell far more copies. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the podcast and what you all do for the community, but this kind of pricing, for a video download no less (which has almost no distribution overhead), just seems a bit crazy.
I’m frustrated

Inappropriate? As a new videocast director / producer, I would like to say that creating a video even with just 30 minutes can take a day, if not 2 or 3 days.
You must think about the message and the targeted audience etc, prepare all the speeches to convey the necessary information clearly, follow the whole sequence at least once to make sure nothing is missed, actual recording with lighting and sound recording perhaps several times if you make mistakes, then editing and finally exporting to a desired format.
In short, video producing is not easy. Therefore, I think Lullabot must be able to price their videos at their will. If the price is too high and the videos don't sell as much as would have been sold if lower priced, that is their responsibility.
