Health insurance through Mediabistro
I applied for mediabistro health insurance, talking to the broker in advance, got in my application on time, called the next day to make sure everything was OK, and now had to go through a whole song and dance that they can't give me health insurance, don't have all the forms, etc., etc.
I have spent days taking care of this and actually had to turn down work to get this taken care of. It could have been fixed instantly if the broker had not 1) lied to me that everything was OK on the 25th or 2) let me speak directly to Oxford
As a result I am out a lot of time, a lot of money for messengers, etc.

Inappropriate?Thanks for the feedback.
I'm not going to get into this specific case (although it is my understanding that these issues have nearly all been resolved), but one point I want to emphasize is that, unfortunately, our entire health system is very bureaucratic. What that means for individuals who are dealing with it is that you have to make sure that you fill out every form to the letter, you meet every requirement, and you don't provide the insurance carrier with any pretext to deny you coverage. It's shameful that we have a system where such life-or-death issues can be determined by the most trivial of reasons, but until it changes, you need to be prepared.
The good news is that mediabistro.com and our partners are your allies in this process. mediabistro.com receives a trivial amount of revenue through our insurance offerings. Total Capital Planning, our broker for downstate New York, is not incentivized to push you to one plan over another. Our interests are best served by helping you find the policy that meets your needs. So if you're having trouble figuring it out, let us know and we'll do whatever we can to help you navigate the maze.
Contact information, which varies depending on which state you live in, can be found at mediabistro.com/insurance.
I hope this was helpful. Please let me know if you have additional concerns. -
Inappropriate?Greg
I'm trying not to take your comment as condescending (gee? "our entire health system is very bureaucratic? really?) but it's difficult.
The problem is nowhere near resolved.
Nor did I receive any phone call (or e-mail) from mediabistro as requested.
1) If you'd read what I posted you'd see that I'm not trying to accuse either mediabistro or Total Capital Planning of "pushing" a program. Merely of incompetent administration, bad customer service, and acting like jerks.
2) This is a serious problem that cost me hundreds of dollars out of pocket yesterday because I had to go to the doctor and do a direct pay
3) I'm receiving e-mails from Total Capital Planning that read like Monty Python skits (for example, today they want me to send a letter proving that I'm no longer working for a company that I left 18 months ago--that's also no longer in business). The "Dead Parrot" skit springs to mind.
I'm probably old enough to be your mother, so the "reality check" about the health care and insurance really does not go down well.
