rude behavior
I just read through the Terms of Use for the first time. I know, I know. I probably said that I agreed to them when I first signed up and I should have actually READ them then. But I didn't.
So, someone started chatting with me this morning and it became clear that what they wanted was "sexy chat" that included a webcam. That's when I decided it was time to check out the terms of service and see if that sort of chat (especially when it was unsolicited on my part) was acceptable here on Me.dium.
To be perfectly honest, I'm not sure the TOU really cleared it up for me. The most relevant section I found was this:
"2. Dinner party manners, please: Don't engage in any conduct that is threatening, abusive, harassing, defamatory, libelous, deceptive, or fraudulent. This goes for personal contact, too: harassing, denigrating, or intimidating any user or group of users is not only bad manners, but it will get you kicked off the site. If you cannot be courteous, please go somewhere else. A bar fight, perhaps, or the boardroom of a publicly traded company."
But it seems like that section has to do more with physically rude statements rather than sexually rude ones.
So, what is Me.dium's stance on such things? Could this person be reported, or is this somewhat expected behavior with the product?
I've never blocked someone. Perhaps it's time to figure that one out, eh?
*eyeroll* and as I was typing away here I was surprised to see I didn't have to join Satisfaction to ask this question. ... then I scrolled down the page. *sigh* OK, OK. So here I am. I'm signing in. At least now instead of just saying I don't like the idea of the place I can actually start to give some constructive criticism on it. ;-)

Inappropriate?Yes, this scenario clearly falls under our dinner party manners clause of the terms (and no, don't feel bad for not reading them before this happened as very few people ever read them). Our goal is to make the social interactions in Me.dium as much like the real world as possible. This includes all of the wonderful exchanges that can happen at a dinner party as well as the creeps that hit on you. We're currently lacking functionality to allow you to react as you would in real life, but I see this developing in two reaction levels depending on the perceived creepiness of the advances - is he just asking if you're single or is he asking for "sexy chat".
Level one - ignore the user. Just like at our dinner party, you should have an option in Me.dium to ignore a user and prevent any further unwelcome advances. Users who are frequently ignored would be flagged for our community team to reach out to in order to sway them back into the socially acceptable behaviors.
Level two - throw drink in creeps face showing the host and entire party what a jerk they are. I see this as a "report user" option that would allow our community team to become directly involved to take whatever steps are required by the offenders behavior.
We've had this functionality on the books for some time now, but have been focusing on our community growth. I'll make sure that they're worked into our priorities and keep this thread updated.
I'd love to hear any feedback that anyone has around this as it's a tricky subject. We don't want Me.dium to become a draconian society where users are booted at the first sign of edgy behavior. Nor do we want it to become a den of evil where people are afraid to walk around at night. I believe in a balance of allowing users to protect themselves and allowing for people to have fun without fear of getting banned.
