What do you think about leaving the Sodium Lauryl Sulfate out of your handwashes?
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate is a detergent and is very drying to the skin. I love and use all of Method's products except the handwash for this reason. It makes me sad to not have that cute Method bottle sitting by my bathroom sink at home.

So this topic has stirred a bit of conversation around here because for a lot of people like yourself, Amy, sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) can be drying and irritating. Plus, there's the whole fear-mongering tactic some companies use, "SLS is carcinogenic! SLS will kill you!!!!1!1 etc." The SLS that we use is derived from coconut oil and is a safe, effective lathering agent that gives you fun, clean bubbles to play with...
oooh bubbles :)
...But I digress. Overall, when looking at a formulation ingredient, we take into account the entire life cycle of that ingredient – source, use, disposal – with the goal of leaving the smallest eco-footprint possible (this includes our fragrances and dyes, as well). In fact, we have a whole team of formulators, engineers and scientists that ensure we are living up to the “greenest” philosophy possible – we call them “Greenskeepers.” They do the following:
-assess all of the ingredients that go into our formulations to
guarantee they are good for the environment, healthy for people and pets, and are sourced responsibly
-ensure method’s final products are biodegradable, non-toxic, and safe for river and marine life
-conduct external testing based on international standards for the biodegradability and non-toxicity of our products
-constantly seek ways to make products with no compromises in environmental performance or efficacy
If they cannot find a way to make a product work well and be healthy, we won’t make it. Period.
Right now we don't have plans to remove SLS from our products, mainly because 1.) there is no substantial evidence that shows SLS/SLES to be a danger either from a health or environmental standpoint 2.) it's high on the efficacy ladder.
I’m proud of our team of greenskeepers

Inappropriate? Thanks for the thorough reply, felicia! That was super informative and it's great to know more about what goes into Method product R&D.
I wish my only complaint was a misplaced belief that the SLS you use was harmful to people and the environment. And knowing it's not does make me happy on the one hand but I'm still sad that I can't use Method hand soaps due to the drying aspect.
Well, at least Method makes enough other products to satisfy my need for attractive product packaging.
I’m happy and sad.

Inappropriate?Totaly understand, and since is is our official response to our SLS questions (so I though I'd get fancy with the tag and all), I'll try to reword this with the team.
Ooh! How's the creamy hand wash for you? Is that any less drying?
I’m informed and hopeful

Inappropriate? The creamy hand wash is nice. Still drying if I wash my hands a lot during the day but it does seem better. Thank you!
-
Inappropriate? Is this product truly biodegradable? I did some research in an organic chemistry class and found that it wasn't, however you claim your hand wash is biodegradable. I would appreciate a scientific answer.
I’m concerned
